1989 murder accused charged

A 46-YEAR-OLD mas was charged in court on Friday with the murder of a coffeeshop owner 21 years ago. Ong Seng Chuen is accused of murdering Mr Ling Ha Hiang, 74, one of the owners of Tien Wah Eating House, at Block 529 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 on Dec 19, 1989. He allegedly committed the crime with Wong Oon Cheong and Sim Thiam Seng at 4.58am. Wong, then 35, was given 10 years and 18 strokes for manslaughter and robbery in 1993, while Sim was sentenced to eight years and 12 strokes for robbery in 1992. Ong, who is believed to have been on the run, was remanded for a week for investigation. If convicted, he faces the mandatory death penalty.
