17-year-old youth arrested for allegedly molesting woman on train
SINGAPORE: A 17-year-old youth was arrested after a woman accused him of molesting her on an MRT train.
At about 8.20pm on August 13, police were informed of a case of outrage of modesty on board a north-bound MRT train. Officers from the Public Transport Security Command and Ang Mo Kio Police Division responded swiftly and the suspect was placed under arrest.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had raised the alarm and informed a fellow passenger on the train when she felt her modesty was being outraged by the youth. The passenger then helped detain the suspect, together with the train station staff, until the police arrived.
Investigations against the 17-year-old are on-going.
The offence of outrage of modesty carries a jail term of up to two years, fine and caning upon conviction.
The commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Keok Tong San, commended the passenger who detained the suspect, as well as the assistance rendered by MRT staff at the station which resulted in the arrest of the suspect.
AC Keok also advised the public to stay vigilant at all times and remain calm should they encounter such crimes while travelling on public transport.
They should raise the alarm immediately for other members of public to help, call "999" and inform the bus or train driver immediately to report the matter. - CNA/ac
