Berlusconi: Balotelli is a rotten apple

The Rossoneri president reiterates that he never wanted to make a move for the Italy international and calls for patience with the fans regarding the re-building of the club

Jan 8, 2013 12:55:00 AM
By Patrick Gleeson

221449hp2.jpg

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has rubbished rumours that the club could sign Mario Balotelli, describing the Manchester City forward as a "rotten apple".

It was thought Balotelli could have been brought in to replace the already-departured Pato and Robinho, who was expected to leave the club in the current window, but the 76-year-old has officially ruled it out.

"The name of Balotelli never came into my thoughts, he is a rotten apple and could infect every group where he goes, even Milan," he said to reporters.

Berlusconi also refused to comment on the future of boss Massimiliano Allegri, saying he was unsure whether he would remain in charge next season, but admitted there was little chance of securing the services of former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola in the near future.

"[You ask] if Allegri will stay at Milan next season? I have to say the truth? Please, ask me another question..."

He continued: "I always tried to bring him [Guardiola] to Milan, because over the last [few] years Barcelona played the best football.

"Until last year our team had high class champions that could play football in Guardiola's style, but now the chances that he can come here are very low."

The Milan president was also keen to call for support from the San Siro fans and to show faith in the youngsters while they redevelop the squad.

"We are dealing with a lot of young players. We decided that we did not want a 'top player' over 21-years-old as we want to re-build.

"Fans must always follow the team with great passion and attachment but need to wait two to three years for AC Milan, after 26 years of success, for the success to come back."

Milan are currently in seventh place in this season's Serie A with 30 points from 19 games.

Uefa opens disciplinary proceedings against Tottenham & Lazio

The two clubs face charges related to the alleged racist behaviour by the Italian club's supporters and crowd trouble from Spurs' fans in the Europa League match in Rome last year

Jan 7, 2013 3:20:00 PM

231962hp2.jpg

Uefa have opened disciplinary proceedings against Tottenham and Lazio relating to incidents during the two side's Europa League clash in Rome last November.

Lazio fans appeared to have mocked the visitors’ tradition Jewish support with anti-Semitic chants during the match, while Tottenham’s supporters were reportedly involved in separate crowd disturbances in and around the ground.

A statement from Uefa reads: "Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against S.S. Lazio. Charges relate to the alleged racist behaviour of Lazio supporters during the Italian club's 0-0 Uefa Europa League Group J draw against Tottenham Hotspur FC in Rome on 22 November 2012.

"Proceedings will also be instigated against S.S. Lazio for throwing of missiles and/or fireworks by their supporters, incidents of a non-sporting nature, late team arrival at the stadium, and late handling of the team sheet.

"Uefa will also commence proceedings against Tottenham Hotspur FC, who face charges related to crowd disturbances.

"These cases will be discussed by the Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body on 24 January 2013."
The match between the two sides ended goalless in the Stadio Olimpico with Hugo Lloris making a string of excellent saves to earn Andre Villas-Boas' side a valuable draw in the Italian capital.

Serie A preview: Lazio aim to close gap on Juventus

10 January 2013

300540header.jpg

Serie A leaders Juventus face a tricky tie away at Parma on Sunday as they attempt to keep second-placed Lazio at bay.

The Old Lady have won four of their past five matches but have failed to pick up three points in their last two appearances at Parma's Stadio Ennio Tardini.

Their closest challengers Lazio, who are five points behind, welcome Atalanta to the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday, a team they have beaten on four of the past five occasions.

A run of eight Serie A matches unbeaten has seen Lazio emerge as Juventus' number one challenger to the championship.

Atalanta are currently sitting in 12th and after a poor run of one win in five games, they are at risk of being sucked into the relegation zone.

On Saturday, Inter Milan will be hoping to get back among the leaders as they host Pescara at the San Siro.

Andrea Stramaccioni's men are coming off a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Udinese last Sunday and have endured a mixed season which has seen them pick up only one point in their past three games.

However, it won't be easy going for the Nerazzurri, whose opponents have won three of their past five and have eased away from the relegation zone.

In the other Saturday match, Bologna meets a Chievo side who have lost once in their past five matches.

On Sunday, Siena travel to Torino looking to work their way off the bottom of the table, Cagliari host Genoa in a battle to stay out of the relegation zone and Catania meet an improving AS Roma side.

Third-placed Napoli clash against Palermo, Udinese square up with Fiorentina as they attempt to work their way up the table and AC Milan hope to improve on their seventh placing when they visit Sampdoria.

Serie A wrap: Inter too good for Pescara, Bologna win big

13 January 2013

300727header.jpg

Inter Milan climbed to third place on the Serie A table thanks to a 2-0 win at home to Pescara, as Bologna thumped Chievo.

Goals from Rodrigo Palacio and Fredy Guarin, in the first and second half respectively, helped Inter record a straight-forward victory over Pescara at San Siro.

The win sees Andrea Stramaccioni's team move third at the expense of Napoli, who play on Sunday.

In the other match on Saturday, Alberto Gilardino's brace either side of half-time, together with goals from Panagiotis Kone and Manolo Gabbiadini, saw Bologna ease to a 4-0 win at home to Chievo.

The result sees Bologna move up to 13th on the table, three points back from Chievo, who sit 11th.

Serie A wrap: Lazio close gap on Juve

14 January 2013

300796header.jpg

Juventus' lead at the top of the table was cut to just three points after Lazio cruised to victory in Serie A action on Sunday.

The defending champions were held to a 1-1 draw at Parma, a result that saw their advantage reduced as Lazio defeated 10-man Atalanta 2-0.

After an extremely stretched first half, Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second half.

From the top of the box, the Italian international unleashed a free-kick inside the wall and a deflection off Jonathan Biabiany helped guide the visitors into a 52nd-minute lead.

Antonio Conte's men appeared happy to defend their one-goal advantage but a lack of urgency cost them in the 78th minute as substitute Nicola Sansone secured a point for Parma.

Juventus are now winless in two league games and a solitary win ahead of Lazio, who extended their unbeaten streak to nine games thanks to a second-half strike from Sergio Floccari and a Davide Brivio own goal.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Champions League hopefuls Napoli powered past lowly Palermo 3-0 at the Stadio San Paolo.

Goals from Christian Maggio, Gokhan Inler and Lorenzo Insigne handed Napoli their third win on the bounce, consolidating third position in the process.

AC Milan missed a chance to climb three spots on the table to sixth after they were held to a goalless draw at Sampdoria.

In an even match, both sides had five shots on target but had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Catania clinched a 1-0 win over Roma, who were without Daniele De Rossi, Francesco Totti, Pablo Osvaldo or Miralem Pjanic and Fiorentina's hopes of European football took a hit after Udinese earned a 3-1 win courtesy of Antonio Di Natale's two-goal performance.

Torino moved clear of the relegation zone with an entertaining 3-2 victory over bottom side Siena, while Cagliari snapped a nine-game losing streak following their 2-1 triumph at home to fellow strugglers Genoa.

Serie A preview: Battle for Europe heats up

18 January 2013

301035header.jpg

The race for European spots in the Serie A heats up this weekend with two crucial clashes helping to shape the table.

Fiorentina host Napoli at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday with the former looking to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to Udinese last weekend.

Napoli, who had a two-point deduction for alleged involvement in match-fixing overturned on appeal, are now sitting on 42 points - in equal second with Lazio - and after three consecutive wins, will be keen to get a victory to extend the seven-point gap over Fiorentina and hold fourth-placed Inter Milan at bay.

Fiorentina will be looking to contain the free-scoring Napoli, led by Edinson Cavani, and start working their way toward finishing in the Champions League positions.

After two consecutive losses against Catania and Napoli, Roma will be hoping for a return to form on Sunday in their home clash against Inter Milan, who snapped a run of three games without a win with a 2-0 triumph over Pescara last weekend.

Inter is sitting in fourth position and will be keen to start putting pressure on Napoli and extend the six-point gap they have over sixth-placed Roma.

League leaders Juventus host Udinese on Saturday as they attempt to preserve their lead over Napoli and Lazio, who travel to Palermo in the other Saturday game.

In other clashes on Sunday, Milan will attempt to drag themselves up the table as Bologna visit the San Siro, while Cagliari will look to stay above the relegation zone as they play away at Atalanta.

Genoa will meet Catania, Chievo Verona host Parma in a ninth-versus-10th battle and Pescara welcome Torino.

Bottom-placed Siena will be hoping to snap a six-game losing streak as they face Sampdoria.

Napoli match-fixing point deduction & defensive duo's bans overturned

The Azzurri are now only three points adrift of Serie A leaders Juventus, while Paolo Cannavaro and Gianluca Grava are clear to play football at the San Paolo Stadium once again

Jan 17, 2013 7:00:00 PM
By Miles Chambers

240458hp2.jpg

Napoli have seen their two-point deduction over a match-fixing scandal erased, while Paolo Cannavaro and Gianluca Grava had their six-month bans overturned, it was revealed on Thursday.

The Italian side had been fined €70,000 and seen their points tally this season reduced by the Disciplinary Commission due to Matteo Gianello’s attempt to fix matches.

The former Partenopei goalkeeper was banned for three years and three months in 2012, after claiming he offered to fix Napoli’s clash with Sampdoria in May 2010.

Cannavaro and Grava were given half-year sentences to sit on the sidelines for not reporting being approached by Gianello ahead of the game, but they insisted that such a conversation never occurred and the defensive veterans have been cleared on appeal.

The Federal Court’s decision means the Azzurri sit just three points behind Juventus in Serie A, level with Lazio but ahead of the Biancocelesti on goal difference.

Cannavaro and Grava will return to Napoli’s squad and will be available for selection immediately.

Serie A wrap: Pogba double sparks Juventus romp

20 January 2013

ImageResizer.ashx

An outstanding display from Paul Pogba led Juventus to a convincing 4-0 over Udinese in the Serie A on Saturday.

The 19-year-old starlet lit up a freezing Juventus Stadium on the stroke of halftime with an unstoppable 30-yard volley before thundering home a shot from outside the box after 66 minutes to send the Bianconeri on their way.

The game was over when Mirko Vucinic squirmed a close-range volley past Udinese goalkeeper Danielle Padelli with 18 minutes left before the Montenegrin striker set up Alessandro Matri to complete the scoring two minutes later.

The win sees Juventus move five points clear of at the summit of Serie A after second-placed Lazio could only manage a 2-2 draw to lowly Palermo in the night's other game.

The capital-city side got off to a good start at the Stadio Renzo Barbera when Sergio Floccari scored after just 10 minutes.

But goals to Egidio Arevalo and Paulo Dybala within two minutes of each other put the hosts ahead with 20 minutes remaining.

Lazio were able to escape with a point thanks to a late Herananes penalty but Vladimir Petkovic's side will be disappointed to not overcome a Palermo side that is languishing 19th on the table with result leaving their title aspirations hanging by a thread.

Serie A wrap: Inter, Roma share spoils

21 January 2013

301325header.jpg

Inter Milan bounced back from a controversial Francesco Totti penalty to snatch a point in their 1-1 draw with Roma on Sunday.

In a match that was characterised by Roma's wasteful finishing, the capital side went ahead after 20 minutes when Michael Bradley was adjudged to have been brought down in the box by Andrea Rannocchia despite replays showing minimal contact between the pair.

Totti stepped up and struck home the resulting spot-kick to give his side the lead, sending the partisan crowd at the Stadio Olimpico into raptures.

Roma then began to control proceedings but could not convert their dominance into goals and were made to pay when Rodrigo Palacio tapped in a Fredy Guarin cross to level the scores on the stroke of half-time.

The second half saw Roma once again fail to convert the plethora of chances that fell their way with Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic pulling off a number of brilliant saves as the visitors held on for a share of the spoils.

The draw leaves the Nerazzurri nine points behind Serie A leaders Juventus in fourth while Roma sit a further six points behind in seventh.

Meanwhile, Facundo Roncaglia scored an unlikely goal from his own half as Fiorentina held Napoli to a 1-1 draw.

Roncaglia gave the home side the lead in the 33rd minute when his wishful ball was misjudged by goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis and bounced into the net.

But the advantage lasted just nine minutes before Edinson Cavani levelled proceedings with a powerful header.

Napoli climbed to second on the table, five points behind champions Juventus, who strengthened their title credentials with a 4-0 win over Udinese on Saturday.

In other matches, Giampaolo Pazzini netted a brace as AC Milan climbed to sixth place with a 2-1 victory over Bologna.

Guglielmo Stendardo 57th-minute equaliser handed Atalanta a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Cagliari.

Catania strengthened their hopes of a European berth by prevailing 2-0 against lowly Genoa, while bottom-placed Siena recorded their first league win in seven matches after beating Sampdoria 1-0.

Chievo came from a goal down to hold Parma to a 1-1 draw, and a resurgent Torino extended their unbeaten run to five games with a 2-0 win over Pescara.

Wesley Sneijder has completed his move from Inter to Galatasaray for a fee of €7.5million and has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Turkish champions.

The Netherlands international will earn €2m in salary between now and the end of the current season before picking up €3.2m a year until the summer of 2016.

The 28-year-old will also be paid a €3.9m signing-on fee, plus €25,000 for every appearance he makes for Fatih Terim's side.

Sneijder can therefore earn an additional €2.5m if, for example, he makes 100 appearances for the club over the three-and-a-half years.

That means the total cost of the transfer for Galatasaray could be a staggering €25.5m.

Sneijder: Mourinho told me to sign for Galatasaray

The midfielder says he asked the Real Madrid coach and Louis van Gaal for their thoughts on his move to Turkey before moving to Istanbul

Wesley Sneijder has revealed he chose to sign for Galatasaray on the advice of Jose Mourinho.

The Netherlands international completed his move to Turkey after falling out of favour at Inter, following his refusal to renegotiate his deal with the Nerazzurri.

The midfielder thrived under Mourinho before the departure of the Portuguese in 2010 and has struggled to produce the same level of performance since his exit.

"I called him before my decision because he's an important person in my career. I've asked his opinion and he gave me a really good advice," he told reporters at a press conference.

"I've also spoken to Louis van Gaal. They both wanted me to go to Galatasaray so it was an easy decision.

"I had a great season in 2009-10 with Inter. We won everything. If you win everything, it's hard to win more.

"The last two years they had many coaches. We started to play with different systems and I started to play in different positions. It was a hard situation there after 2010."

There had been worries that the transfer may not go through given the length of time between a fee being agreed and Sneijder signing his contract, but the 28-year-old revealed he wanted to leave Inter on good terms before concluding the transfer.

"I had some problems with my ex-club Inter so I wanted to fix everything with them first. I had a good relationship with [Massimo] Moratti. I wanted to resolve everything with the club," he added.

The playmaker also revealed he had received other offers for his services, but is confident he has made the right choice in signing for what he described "a top club".
