Matthaus hits out at FIFPro World XI

The former Germany international was not impressed with the dominance of La Liga, but felt Lionel Messi fully deserved to win the Ballon d'Or

By Stefan Coerts

Lothar Matthaus has voiced his surprise at the composition of the FIFPro World XI and hit out at the number of Spain-based players in the selection.

Players such as Dani Alves and Gerard Pique made the squad after relatively disappointing performances throughout 2012, whereas Andrea Pirlo and Mats Hummels missed out despite their great form, much to the frustration of the former Germany international.

"I can't understand that the FIFPro World XI only consists of players from La Liga," Matthaeus was quoted as saying by Focus.

"In the front rows, there were some people who were shaking their heads."

The former Bayern Munich star also had his say on Lionel Messi's fourth consecutive Ballon d'Or win, and stressed that the Argentine fully deserved the award.

"Messi's success is absolutely fine, of course."

The Barcelona attacker became the first player in history to win the prestigious individual award four times.

Miroslav Stoch wins Fifa Puskas award

The Slovakia international got the most votes in the annual vote for the goal of the year prize and finished ahead of some of the game's most exciting talents

Jan 7, 2013 6:50:00 PM

244846hp2.jpg

Fenerbahce winger Miroslav Stoch has pipped Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao and Santos star Neymar to the 2012 Fifa Puskas award.

The Slovakia international found space on the edge of the box in Fenerbahce's league match against Genclerbirligi on March 3, 2012 and superbly hooked a volley into the top corner of the net following a set piece.

He saw off competition from Falcao's stunning bicycle kick, which came in second place, and an individual effort from Neymar, which completed the top three.

Stoch's winning strike was one of two goals he netted in an impressive 6-1 home win.

The 23-year-old attacker follows in the footsteps of players such as Neymar, who won the award for 2011, Hamit Altintop, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who claimed the inaugural edition.

The versatile attacker has been under contract with the Turkish giants since 2010, and previously turned out for clubs such as Twente, Chelsea and Nitra.

Vicente del Bosque named 2012 Fifa Coach of the Year

The veteran tactician was rewarded for winning Euro 2012, finishing ahead of Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho and former Barcelona man Pep Guardiola

Jan 7, 2013 6:20:00 PM
By Stefan Coerts

244845hp2.jpg

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has won the 2012 Fifa Coach of the Year award after leading his country to their third consecutive major trophy at Euro 2012.

The 62-year-old only just missed out on the prize in 2010 after guiding la Roja to World Cup glory, but this time emerged victorious after Spain hammered Italy 4-0 in the final of Euro 2012.

The eventual champions were held to a 1-1 draw by the Italians in the group stages, but went on to cruise to European glory without conceding in the remainder of the tournament as Republic of Ireland, Croatia, France and Portugal were eliminated on the way to the final.

Del Bosque now has two Champions Leagues, a World Cup and a European title in his trophy cabinet.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho missed out after winning the award in 2010 and coming third last year.

The 49-year-old helped Madrid to their first Liga title since 2008 as they collected 100 points from 38 games.

Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, had to settle for a top three spot as well after Barcelona captured the Copa del Rey.

Casillas wins Goalkeeper of the Year award

The captain beat away competition from the likes of Petr Cech, Victor Valdes and Joe Hart to take the International Federation of Football History and Statistics award

Jan 6, 2013 9:00:00 AM
By Miles Chambers

238367hp2.jpg

Real Madrid's Iker Casillas has been awarded Goalkeeper of the Year by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

The Spain international received 224 votes to win - 96 more than second-placed Buffon - and it is the fifth time that he has taken home the IFFHS award in his career.

The 31-year-old has responded on his Facebook page, thanking the Madrid fans for their support.

"I am very pleased with this award," he wrote on the social networking site.

"And once again, I want to dedicate it to all the fans.”

The Blancos captain hit the headlines at the tail-end of 2012 after Jose Mourinho opted to drop him for reserve shot-stopper Antonio Adan in the club’s 3-2 defeat by Malaga at La Rosaleda.

However, Casillas was able to beat away competition for the award from the likes of Chelsea’s Petr Cech, Barcelona’s Victor Valdes, Juventus’ Gianluigi Buffon, Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer and Manchester City’s Joe Hart.

Casillas had a stellar 2012, with the two highlights being the dismantling of Barcelona as La Liga champions and winning the Euros with la Roja.

La Liga preview: Malaga looking to test Barcelona

10 January 2013

300545header.jpg

Runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona will travel to Malaga on Sunday hoping to keep their perfect league record intact.

Barca have been ruthless this season, only dropping points to Real Madrid in a 2-2 draw in October, and will be confident of victory against a Malaga side 21 points below them on the league table despite being fourth.

With Lionel Messi taking out the Ballon D'Or this week for a record fourth successive year and a raft of players making it to the FIFA Team of the Year, morale among Tito Villanova's side will be sky high.

However, Malaga will be no pushovers with their 3-2 win over Real Madrid before the winter break and their impressive Champions League run reasons for Barca to be wary.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid will travel to bottom side Osasuna on Sunday in what should be their 12th win of the campaign.

Jose Mourinho's men have won just one of their last three La Liga games and their inconsistency has been a key reason for their disappointing season which sees them sitting in third place, 16 points behind Barcelona and out of the title race.

But Ronaldo and company will be confident they can get the job done against an Osasuna side that has conceded more than a goal a game and tasted victory just three times this season.

Real Betis play Levante in what will be one of the more intriguing matches of the round.

The teams sit fifth and sixth on the table respectively with just one point separating them and a win for either could potentially move them into the Champions League places if Malaga fails to beat Barcelona.

Saturday's games begin with Real Valladolid facing Mallorca. Lowly Espanyol will hope to escape the relegation zone when the take on Celta de Vigo before Sevilla travel to the Mestalla to face Valencia.

Sunday sees Real Sociedad come up against Deportivo La Coruna and second-placed Atletico Madrid host Real Zaragoza before the round finishes on Monday with a match between Getafe and Granada at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez in Madrid.

La Liga: Athletic Bilbao 1 Rayo Vallecano 2

12 January 2013

300658header.jpg

In-form Rayo Vallecano won 2-1 away to struggling Athletic Bilbao on Friday, carrying their impressive La Liga form into 2013.

Rayo took the lead through a goal from Alhassane Bangoura three minutes into the second half at Estadio San Mames.

Piti made it 2-0 from the penalty spot on 65 minutes, before Mikel San Jose got one back for Athletic with 13 minutes remaining.

The home side proved unable to force an equaliser in the closing exchanges, despite Rayo being reduced to 10 men by the 89th-minute dismissal of Alejandro Galvez.

Rayo's fourth successive league victory lifts to seventh on the standings, while Athletic, winless in three, sit six points above the relegation zone in 14th.

La Liga wrap: Real draw at Osasuna, Valencia win

13 January 2013

300734header.jpg

Champions Real Madrid were held 0-0 away to Osasuna in La Liga on Saturday, as Valencia, Espanyol and Real Valladolid all won.

Real have struggled to match the heights they hit on the way to the league title last season, and dropped more points in the stalemate at Estadio El Sadar, where Jose Mourinho's team finished a man down following the dismissal of Kaka in the 76th minute.

With third-placed Real already 15 points behind Barcelona, the league leaders have an opportunity to increase the margin when they go away to Malaga on Sunday.

In other matches on Saturday, a second-half brace from Roberto Soldado helped Valencia defeat Sevilla 2-0 at home.

Late goals from Oscar Gonzalez and Patrick Ebert saw Valladolid snatch a 3-1 win at home to Mallorca, who had looked on course to claim a point from their visit to Estadio Nuevo Jose Zorrilla.

Finally, Sergio Garcia's goal was enough for Espanyol to beat fellow strugglers Celta Vigo 1-0 at home.

La Liga wrap: Barca win at Malaga, Atletico keep pace

14 January 2013

300801header.jpg

Barcelona's outstanding season continued with a 3-1 victory at Malaga in Sunday's La Liga action.

The Catalan giants have now won 18 of their 19 league fixtures this season, only dropping points in a 2-2 draw against fellow heavyweights Real Madrid in October.

After scoring 91 goals for club and country in 2012, Argentine Lionel Messi already has two this year, adding to his penalty in a 4-0 win over Espanyol last week with a 27th-minute opener at La Rosaleda.

Midfielder Cesc Fabregas doubled the lead five minutes after the break, converting Messi's assist.

And Thiago Alcantara made sure of the win with an 82nd-minute strike, which was also set-up by Messi.

Malaga managed a late consolation through Argentine substitute Diego Buonanotte, but it mattered little, as Barcelona celebrated another league victory.

They did not extend their eight-point lead on second-placed Atletico Madrid though, who kept pace with a 2-0 win over Real Zaragoza.

Tiago opened the scoring on 31 minutes for the winners and Radamel Falcao continued his outstanding season with a goal from the penalty spot seven minutes later.

The day's other match saw strugglers Deportivo La Coruna claim a 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad, with Carlos Vela netting the equaliser for the hosts.

Extra Time: Messi & Ronaldo star in TV commercial

The duo may forge one of the most competitive rivalries in sport, but that did not stop them from teaming up in an advert to promote Al Jazeera's coverage of the Clasico

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo play in the same position, vie for the Ballon d'Or annually, are employed by the most fiery set of rivals in the world game and represent two of international football's heavyweights - the parallels could not be more startling.

But it seems the attacking duo can get along after all... via texts on their mobiles!

The two (officially) best players in the world have staged a television commercial for Al Jazeera with the purpose of promoting the channel's coverage of the Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona in March.

In the ad, Messi and Ronaldo appear to send each other messages from their phones and exchange warning shots ahead of the crunch derby clash which the Blancos can ill-afford to squander.
Messi: "I'm looking forward to the Clasico."

Cristiano: "So am I. I'd like to score against you."

Messi: "Haha, by then I should have broken a few more records."

Cristiano: "Blah, blah, blah..."

Messi: "See you in March."

Cristiano: "I can't wait..."

There is match-fixing in La Liga, claims LFP vice-president

The LFP vice-president has voiced his opinion that match-fixing has spread to the Spanish top flight, while he refuses to blame the schedule for low attendance figures

Javier Tebas, vice-president of the Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP), believes that there is match-fixing in La Liga, and fears that a similar scandal to the Scommessopoli controversy that has rocked Italian football could be on the cards.

Tebas has little doubt that the results of certain games have been fixed, but has admitted that he has no evidence to back his claims.

"Games are being sold in La Liga and the cheaters must be exposed," the LFP vice-president told Onda Cero in an interview.

"Unfortunately, I cannot prove it, but games are being fixed in Spain. I cannot rule out a similar scandal to the ones in Italy."

Tebas also had his say on the low attendance figures in Spain, and blamed the country's financial crisis for the lack of crowds.

"The low attendances do not have anything to do with the schedule," he said.

"It's the logical result of the economic crisis. And numbers have dropped by only 3.5 per cent."

Pep Guardiola confirmed as Bayern Munich coach on three-year deal

• Guardiola to replace Jupp Heynckes in summer
• Had been linked with Chelsea and Manchester City

Wednesday 16 January 2013 18.05 GMT

Bayern Munich have announced that Pep Guardiola will become the club's new coach when Jupp Heynckes' contract expires this summer.

Bayern revealed that Heynckes, 67, will stay on in his post until the end of this season before retiring, at which point the former Barcelona coach will take over on a deal that runs until June 2016.

The news comes 24 hours after Bayern's media director Markus Horwick described claims that the club had approached Guardiola to take over as "complete rubbish", and Guardiola himself said he hoped to manage in the Premier League, with Manchester City and Chelsea among those interested in hiring him.

Bayern, though, revealed that the move had been in the pipeline since at least before Christmas, when Heynckes informed the club he would not be seeking a contract extension.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern's chief executive, said: "We are delighted that we have managed to get Pep Guardiola whom several big clubs wanted and contacted. He is one of the most successful trainers in the world and we are sure that not only Bayern Munich but the whole of German football will benefit from what he brings."

Rummenigge backed Heynckes to oversee a strong end to the season, having guided Bayern to a nine-point lead in the standings ahead of the Bundesliga's resumption following the winter break this weekend.

"As a club and as Jupp Heynckes' friends we have to show understanding for this decision. We have to accept it and we have to respect it," Rummenigge added. "During personal talks with Jupp we assured each other that we will do anything we can, and now even more, to have a successful second half of the season."

Heynckes, in his third spell at Bayern after returning to the club in June 2011, guided the club to the Champions League final in May, where they lost to Chelsea on penalties.

Bayern's chairman Uli Hoeness added: "Only someone of the calibre of Pep Guardiola was an adequate replacement for Jupp Heynckes."

Guardiola, 41, replaced Frank Rijkaard at Barca in 2008 and during his four years at Camp Nou led the club to 13 trophies, making him the most successful coach in the club's history.

"The signing of Guardiola shows the value of Bayern who want to be on par with the likes of Real Madrid or Manchester United," said Bayern's honorary president Franz Beckenbauer.

La Liga preview: Upstarts Rayo seek to extend run

16 January 2013

300919header.jpg

Unfashionable Rayo Vallecano look likely to win their fifth-straight match in La Liga when they travel to Granada on Saturday.

The club based in Madrid's suburb of Vallecas are renowned as one of the poorest clubs in Spain's top-flight but despite their economic problems, Vallecano sit sixth in La Liga after 19 rounds and will extend their winning streak to five games if they defeat 17th-placed Granada this weekend.

Alhassane Bangoura, Piti and Roberto Trashorras have been key to Vallecano's run of good form, which started before the winter break when they won 1-0 away to Valencia.

Bangoura and Piti, the preferred wingers in Vallecano head coach Paco Jemez's favoured 4-2-3-1 formation; have scored two and four goals respectively during the winning streak, while Trashorras has produced three assists.

Piti is Vallecano's top-scorer this season with nine goals, while Brazilian striker Leo Baptistao has hit the back of the net six times.

A victory in Granada could take Vallecano to fifth in La Liga if Malaga fail to beat Celta Vigo later on Saturday.

League-leaders Barcelona will look to extend their unbeaten run to 20 matches when they travel to Real Sociedad, while Getafe and Sevilla will also clash on Saturday.

Barcelona set a new La Liga record last week, ending the first half of the season with 55 of a possible 57 points.

The previous record of 52 points was set two years ago by Pep Guardiola's Barcelona side.

In Sunday's matches, second-placed Atletico Madrid will host Levante, Real Valladolid are set to take on Real Zaragoza and Real Madrid will travel to Valencia, while on Monday, Real Betis are up against Athletic Bilbao.

La Liga: Espanyol 3 Mallorca 2

19 January 2013

301121header.jpg

Espanyol won a relegation six-pointer at home to Mallorca in La Liga on Friday, clinching a 3-2 win via an 83rd-minute goal to Baena.

The hosts at Estadi Cornella-El Prat led after 16 minutes when Simao found the back of the net, but they were stunned to head into the half-time interval behind.

Mexican attacker Giovani dos Santos equalised 10 minutes prior to the break, before Javi Marquez gave Mallorca fans hope of an escape from the drop zone by putting them ahead seven minutes later.

A penalty to Verdu in the 68th minute squared proceedings, before Baene stole all three points for Javier Aguirre's men with seven minutes of normal time to spare - with the winner coming just moments after a red card was issued to Mallorca attacker Luna.

Espanyol moved four points clear of the drop zone, with Mallorca occupying 18th spot, sitting goal difference from safety.

La Liga wrap: Sociedad shock 10-man Barca

20 January 2013

301223header.jpg

Real Sociedad have brought Barcelona's unbeaten La Liga record to an end with a stunning 3-2 win on Saturday.

Real Madrid had previously been the only side to take a point from the Catalans this season but Sociedad went one better as they heroically came from two goals down to claim a memorable win.

Barca appeared to be heading for their 19th win of the year when Lionel Messi scored after seven minutes before Pedro doubled the visitors' advantage with 25 minutes on the clock.

But Sociedad gave themselves a chance when Chori Castro scored just before the halftime break and when Barcelona defender Gerard Pique received his second yellow card after tripping Carlos Vela on 56 minutes the home side began to press for an equaliser.

They soon found it six minutes later courtesy of a Javier Mascherano own goal after the Argentine was unable to get out of the way of a Chori shot and with a partisan home crowd behind them an unlikely Sociedad victory became a real possibility.

Barcelona defended resolutely as the clock wound down but Sociedad eventually found the winner in injury time when Imanol Agirretxe met a Carlos Martinez cross to seal the most surprising result of the La Liga season.

Meanwhile, Malaga missed the chance to move into fourth place on the table after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Celta de Vigo.

Martin Demichelis put the home side ahead on 37 minutes but Manuel Pellegrini's side were unable to keep their opponents at bay as Augusto Fernandez levelled the scores with 14 minutes remaining to earn Celta de Vigo a vital point as they attempt to avoid relegation.

In the day's other matches, Granada belied their position on the table as they stunned Rayo Vallecano 2-0 while Getafe and Sevilla played out a 1-1 draw.
