Fergie could miss start of United's title defence as boss requires hip surgery in summer

By DAVID KENT PUBLISHED: 07:38 GMT, 4 May 2013 | UPDATED: 10:35 GMT, 4 May 2013

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to miss the beginning of the club's Barclays Premier League title defence as he is due to undergo hip surgery in the summer. The 71-year-old Scot has been troubled by the problem for some time and is set for the operation when the club return from a pre-season tour. But the club return to England just 18 days before the start of the season which with leave Fergie little time for recuperation.

Going under the knife: Sir Alex will have surgery on his hip this summer and will miss the start of the season

The club have confirmed the manager will go under the knife in the summer, but have stressed it has no impact on his position at Old Trafford.United's pre-season plans this summer include a three-week tour of Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong this summer and return on July 30.They then face either Manchester City or Wigan in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 11.A senior United sources told the Mirror they would be 'amazed' if Ferguson is in the dug-out for the start of next term in August.Ferguson has always said his health would dictate how long he would carry on as United manager.

He was taken ill at a function in his native Scotland almost 12 months ago, although his nosebleeds were put down to the amount of short flights he had undertaken. Ferguson subsequently missed pre-season matches in Norway and Germany and also sat out a mid-winter break in Qatar. Meanwhile, Ferguson has insisted he has no plans to offload any of his star men this summer. Ferguson has already confirmed he has a few ideas in mind for the summer, even though executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward claimed on Thursday there was no need for 'major retooling' of the Red Devils squad.

There are some players who appear surplus to requirements though, including midfielder Anderson and wide-man Nani, both of whom have failed to match expectations since their arrivals in 2007. Nani has made more of an impact but his contract is due to expire next year and so far, the respective parties are poles apart in their valuations. However, Ferguson insists no one is going anywhere. 'We have no plans to sell anyone,' said Ferguson. 'That's a fact. There is no need for us to sell anyone. Nani played last week at Arsenal and he did well. 'When he is in form there are very few better than him. So I think we will bring him back in pre-season training and he will be all right.'

Brother of £15m United signing Zaha is 'general' in gang behind string of violent crimes

By ANDY JAMES PUBLISHED: 08:34 GMT, 6 May 2013 | UPDATED: 12:34 GMT, 6 May 2013

As Wilfried Zaha prepares to link up with his new Manchester United team-mates this summer, the gang culture he has managed to steer clear from in south London has been brought to light by revelations surrounding the young winger's elder brother. Zaha, 20, officially became a United player in January after Sir Alex Ferguson sanctioned a £15million deal to bring him north from Crystal Palace, where the player has spent the last four months on loan. Already an England international, Zaha looks set for stardom but things could have been very different for the player had he trodden the same road as his brother Herve, a Daily Mirror report has revealed.

Back to school: Herve and Wilfried are pictured at SFX College in south London last week

Herve, 24, has claimed to be a leader, or 'general', of notorious south London gang Don't Say Nothing. Also known as DSN, the gang has thought to have been responsible for stabbings, shootings and robberies across south London since 2007.Using the gang name Zeltor, Herve wrote on his Bebo profile page in 2009: 'All u aluminium gangsters coverd by other peoples fame, u knw hu u r, get real. level has changed. my TEAM DO, DID AND THEY F****** DOES THIS THING. so n***** please, cos u dnt wanna see my n*****s squeeze, cos if we do we leave ur f****** body ina fridge, let it freeze...let it go six feet deep...bigup my up all my DSN mandem say no mre.' Herve received a 12-month conditional discharge for criminal damage in July 2012 after hurling a paving slab through a car window while a female driver sat at the wheel. He was ordered to pay £280 in compensation and court costs.

Moving on: Zaha will join up with Manchester United this summer

article-2320106-199E8C00000005DC-884_634x424.jpg

DSN first hit the headlines in 2007 when they were involved in a brutal battle with a rival gang at a shopping centre in Croydon. The gangs wielded machetes and baseball bats in broad daylight. There is no suggestion at all that Wilfried has ever been involved with the gang and a Daily Mirror source said: 'Wilfried has come from a really difficult background and has done well to stay out of all the gang warfare that goes on in those areas. 'He’s also now involved with charities that are trying to help these communities to give something back.'The Zahas emigrated from Ivory Coast to south London when Wilfried was four years old. He has four brothers and three sisters and credits his father's strict approach to his success.

The family, who now live in Croydon, grew up in nearby Thornton Heath where Zaha's father imposed strict 6pm curfews to ensure that Wilfried focused on his football. Zaha made his Palace debut as a 17-year-old in March 2010 and has gone on to make 140 appearances for the first team. Palace take on Brighton in the Championship play-offs this weekend where Zaha will be hoping to help his hometown club into the Barclays Premier League before his loan spell ends. Zaha, who is expected to go straight into United's first-team squad next season, has signed a five-and-a-half year contract at Old Trafford worth a reported £35,000 a week.

Jose Mourinho will be the new Chelsea manager, everybody knows I am leaving, says Rafael Benítez

Rafael Benítez today dropped a huge hint that Chelsea had lined up Jose Mourinho to replace him as manager.

<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/b5lT9oaOrnQ?rel=0" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe>

By Ben Rumsby 3:32PM BST 07 May 2013

Mourinho’s representatives have been in talks with the club over what would be a sensational return to Stamford Bridge this summer. And interim manager Benítez suggested this afternoon that those discussions may have borne fruit.

Confirming there was no prospect of his own tenure being extended, he said: “You know that the next year, there’ll be another manager here.

“I think that everybody knows who will be here. “It’s not my concern now what will happen next year.”

Benitez’s apparent revelation came after Chelsea captain John Terry revealed the full extent of Mourinho’s continued grip on the club he managed for more than three years until 2007.

The defender confirmed he and his team-mates still exchanged regular text messages with the Real Madrid manager almost six years on, something Benítez could be forgiven for finding unwelcome. But the Spaniard said: “My concern is if they are in contact with me.

“We talk every day and we talk about what we have to do and that is the main thing for me.”

Benítez refused to be drawn on his own future, despite Schalke continuing to circle the former Liverpool boss, who has just four matches left in charge of Chelsea. He admitted the first of those was “the most important” of the season, tomorrow’s top-four showdown with Tottenham.

Victory would all but guarantee Champions League football next season, while even a draw would keep Chelsea in control of their destiny.

There is also the added spice of Andre Villas-Boas’s return to Stamford Bridge for the first time since he was sacked as manager last year. Villas-Boas, who fell out with more than one Chelsea player, has suggested the Spurs squad had been more receptive to his methods.

But Benítez said of his own side: “What I could see and find every day is a very good group of players, keen to learn, ready to do things and to improve, and you have seen a lot of them improving this year.”

Villas-Boas has had the same effect on Footballer of the Year Gareth Bale but Benítez had no specific plan for Tottenham’s talisman. He said: “Obviously, we have to keep an eye on him but they have to keep an eye on (Juan) Mata or (Eden) Hazard or any other of our players.”

Benítez confirmed Hazard should return from a calf problem, while John Obi Mikel (hip) and Ryan Bertrand (knee) remained sidelined.

He also revealed Oriol Romeu was in contention for a surprise comeback, the midfielder having been out since December with a serious knee injury.

Manchester United confirm Sir Alex Ferguson will retire at end of the season

Calling it quits: Sir Alex Ferguson has retired as Manchester United manager

By Mark Ogden 10:12AM BST 08 May 2013

As exclusively revealed by Telegraph Sport last night, the 71-year-old, who guided United to their 20th domestic title last month, will take charge of his final game when his team faces West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on May 19.

After a day of frenzied speculation, during which numerous attempts to contact Old Trafford failed to generate a response, United issued a statement at 9.10am to the New York Stock Exchange to confirm that Ferguson, appointed in November 1986, would leave his post later this month.

The statement said: “Sir Alex Ferguson will retire at the end of the season, Manchester United announced today.

“The most successful manager in English football history will bow out after the West Bromwich Albion game on 19 May and join the football club board.”

With Everton manager David Moyes and Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho the front-runners to succeed Ferguson, the Scot admitted that his decision to retire has come at the right time for him and the club.

“The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly,” Ferguson said. “It is the right time.

“It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so.

“The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.

“Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world.

“Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both Director and Ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future.

“I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential. My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career.”

Everton line up Martinez as Manchester United-bound Moyes replacement

May 8, 2013 1:45:00 PM

278318hp2.jpg

The Merseyside club have already identified the Wigan manager as a replacement for the long-serving Scot, who is due to announced as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor

EXCLUSIVE
By Wayne Veysey | Chief Correspondent

Everton have made Roberto Martinez their No.1 target to replace Manchester United-bound David Moyes, Goal.com can reveal.

The Wigan manager is the Merseysiders' standout choice to take over from the Scot, who is poised to bring an end to his 11-year reign at Goodison Park.

Everton have been preparing for the possibility of Moyes's departure at the end of the season for months given his failure to commit to negotiations to extend a contract that expires this summer.

Chairman Bill Kenwright is also an admirer of Porto manager Vitor Pereira, who was a guest of the club at a Premier League match over the Christmas period, but the Toffees will move first for Martinez if, as expected, Moyes takes over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

As revealed by Goal.com, the 50-year-old Scot has agreed a deal to become the new United boss and is set to be appointed by the end of the week, possibly even within 24 hours of Sir Alex's announcement.

Although Kenwright claimed in an interview in April that no plans are in place for what would be the club's first change of manager in 11 years, it is understood that a shortlist of possible successors has been compiled, with Martinez's name at the top.

The 39-year-old Spaniard is much admired by Everton chiefs for maintaining Wigan's Premier League status since joining the north-west club from Swansea City in the summer of 2009.

He will lead the Latics out in Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester City on Saturday but the club are on the brink of losing the top-flight spot that they have held for nine seasons following Tuesday's 3-2 home defeat to the Swans.

It was a defeat that leaves Wigan three points adrift of safety with a trip to Arsenal and a home fixture against Aston Villa to come.

Martinez held talks with Liverpool last summer before rejecting the opportunity to succeed Kenny Dalglish after refusing to work under a planned tier of executives with shared control of recruiting players.

He is believed to regard Everton as an attractive post, given the foundations put in place by Moyes in recent years.

It's Moyes: Manchester United to name Everton boss as Sir Alex Ferguson successor

May 8, 2013 11:15:00 AM

240155hp2.jpg

Goal.com understands that the recently crowned Premier League champions are set to confirm that the Toffees manager will take over at Old Trafford at the end of the season

EXCLUSIVE
By Wayne Veysey

David Moyes is set to be appointed the new manager of Manchester United in the next 24 hours, Goal.com understands.

The Everton boss is expected to be announced as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson, who revealed on Wednesday morning that he is stepping down at the end of the season.

Sources have told Goal.com that the United players learned at the club's Carrington training ground today that Moyes is the man who has been lined up to take over from Sir Alex.

Everton have said that they have not been approached by the new Premier League champions to negotiate Moyes' release but it is understood that the Scot has agreed a deal to take over at Old Trafford.

The 50-year-old will have to resign from his post at Goodison Park to complete the formalities of a switch to United but he is out of contract at the end of the season and the process is set to be a swift, smooth and amicable one.

Moyes is a long-time friend of Sir Alex and the pair are set to enjoy a close relationship next season, given that Sir Alex is moving upstairs to join United's board of directors.

It is believed that Moyes has been personally cherry-picked by Sir Alex ahead of a number of Continental managers with proven European credentials.

The decision would then have been ratified by the United board, including the Glazer family, who own the club, and current chief executive David Gill, but they are believed to have been comfortable with Sir Alex having the biggest say in the identity of the man who takes his seat in the dugout.

A close circle of senior United figures have kept the plans shrouded in secrecy to avoid a repeat of the situation in 2001-02 when Sir Alex felt the team were destabilised after he announced his intention to retire at the end of the campaign, only to later change his mind.

Moyes has established Everton as a top-six club during his 11-year reign on Merseyside despite having a budget that is dwarfed by his immediate rivals.

He has not won a trophy since moving to Goodison Park in March 2002 but United are putting greater store in his Premier League experience, motivational qualities, coaching nous and ability to get the most out of his players.

Everton are on course to finish above Merseyside rivals Liverpool in the Premier League for the second consecutive season, a highly commendable achievement given the disparity in resources of the two clubs.

Gill, who will also leave Old Trafford this summer, has consistently said that United would seek an experienced candidate whenever the time came to make their first managerial appointment since November 1986.

Sir Alex held an emotional meeting with the players and senior coaching staff on Wednesday morning to tell them of his decision to step down as manager before he went to the main dining hall at Carrington to address a broader spectrum of club employees.

The indication given to staff is that Moyes is the man who will soon be announced as the new United boss.

Manchester United share price down 1.76% after Sir Alex Ferguson retirement

By Chris Davie
May 8, 2013 11:40:00 PM

278411hp2.jpg

After just 10 minutes of the New York Stock Exchange opening, share prices fell from £12.08 to £11.51, but recovered to £11.87 by the end of the day's trading on Wednesday

Manchester United's share price on the New York Stock Exchange closed at $18.44 [£11.87] after a day of fluctuation following Sir Alex Ferguson's announcement that he will retire at the end of the season.

Trading opened in New York at 14.30BST for the first time since the relevation and, after just 10 minutes, United posted a 4.7 per cent drop in share price from $18.77 [£12.08] to $17.88 [£11.51].

After an hour, United's price appeared to stabilise after it had risen back up to $18.41 [£11.84] but fluctuations continued until the stock finished at $18.44 [£11.87], for an day's loss of -1.76%.

With Sir Alex to retire at the end of the season and take up roles as a director and ambassador, Goal.com exclusively revealed that Everton manager David Moyes will replace the 71-year-old at Old Trafford and could be confirmed within the next 24 hours.

In his statement, Sir Alex believes that "now is the right time" for him to step down but insisted that he is leaving the side "in the strongest possible shape".

United chief executive David Gill confirmed that Sir Alex, along with Sir Bobby Charlton, are involved in the appointment of the new manger.

"The qualities [needed] are the ones that have been inherent in Manchester United for many years," Gill told MUTV.

"If you look at what has happened with the two most successful eras – Sir Matt Busby and Alex – they are managers who got involved in the whole aspect of the club, whether it be from the youth team up to the first team.

"All aspects of it, plus that degree of loyalty and the understanding of the football club that it's not just what happens on the first-team pitch, is crucial to the success of Manchester United. Those are the sort of things we’ll be looking at.

"Clearly he has to have the requisite football experience, both in terms of domestic and European experience, so I think it's a small pool but we'll move forward."

Phil Neville in running for Manchester United & Everton coaching roles

May 9, 2013 12:22:00 AM

270682hp2.jpg

The Toffees captain has announced he will leave Goodison Park at the end of the season, but could quit playing altogether with the chance to follow David Moyes to Old Trafford

By Paul Clennam

Phil Neville is being considered for a senior coaching role by both Manchester United and Everton, Goal understands, with David Moyes set to be announced as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor at Old Trafford later this week.

Neville, who turned 36 in January, is still considering his options over whether he wants to retire from playing and move into coaching, but is being lined up for a backroom position by both clubs.

Moyes, who as Goal.com exclusively revealed will be confirmed as Ferguson's replacement after the 71-year-old announced his stunning retirement on Wednesday, is keen to harness Neville's experience in the dugout at the Theatre of Dreams next term.

There have also been suggestions on Merseyside that Neville could be Moyes' shock successor at Goodison Park next season, but Goal understands that Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright has earmarked Wigan boss Roberto Martinez as the club's No.1 target.

Moyes had publicly offered Neville a coaching role at Everton after the defender announced he would leave Goodison Park in April, stating: "If he wants to be part of my staff here he is more than welcome, he really is.

"He has been a big, powerful influence here for eight years and a big help to me in my job."

And despite Neville having insisted that he wants to continue playing at the highest level, it is thought by sources close to United that the chance of returning to Old Trafford, where he made 386 appearances under Ferguson, could make him reconsider.

Neville will join the England Under-21 coaching staff ahead of this summer's European Championships in Israel, having worked with Stuart Pearce's backroom team ahead of a qualifier against Belgium in February 2012.

Everton chairman Kenwright hints at Moyes departure to Manchester United

By Joe Doyle
May 9, 2013 12:50:00 AM

278393hp2.jpg

The Toffees' chairman admits that the manager has a decision to make, stating that he had "served the club wonderfully well", but confirmed he would be in charge against West Ham

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has hinted that David Moyes will succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as the next manager of Manchester United, stating that the 50-year-old "has a right to make his own decisions".

Goal exclusively revealed on Wednesday morning that the Scot will replace his compatriot at Old Trafford, with the Toffees lining up a move for Wigan boss Roberto Martinez.

Moyes, who is out of contract this summer, met Kenwright in London on Wednesday. However, while the 67-year-old says he is unaware of any deal between United and Moyes, he concedes that the decision is Moyes' to make.

"I don't know about a deal being done. David had a meeting scheduled with me and we had a good meeting," Kenwright told Sky Sports News.

"I think at the end of the day, David's contract is up in six weeks' time and he has a right to make his own decisions. He's served this club wonderfully well and he has a right to make his own decision.

"It's 22:45BST and you've been waiting for me all day, I really just want to go home now, see the dogs, have a cup of tea and go to bed. I don't know anything about [reports of Moyes leaving]."

Kenwright also confirmed that Moyes would be in charge of the Toffees' Premier League game against West Ham this weekend.

Agent: Financial Fair Play is making rich clubs richer

Belgian representative Daniel Striani unleashes onslaught on Uefa as he takes the fight over controversial FFP rules to the courts

EXCLUSIVE
By Hocine Harzoune

Belgian agent Daniel Striani has explained his decision to challenge Uefa's Financial Fair Play (FFP) as he believes the new regulations will only further increase the gap between rich teams and the smaller clubs.

Striani's lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont already announced earlier this week that they will challenge FFP at the European Commission. Dupont became a household name in sports-law in 1995 when he represented Jean-Marc Bosman in his fight against the existing transfer system in football, eventually resulting in the Bosman ruling.

"The rules will lead to restrictions in terms of investment, will diminish the number of player transfers that take place and will also bring down the revenues of player agents," a statement released by Dupont read.

"This rule also impacts upon the right to free movement of capital, to free movement of workers and to the free availability of services."

Striani has now added that FFP will not only have a negative impact on the profession of agents, but will also prevent smaller clubs from challenging the traditional big clubs.

"Financial Fair Play will further increase the gap between big clubs and smaller teams. I mainly work with the latter, hence my concerns," Striani told Goal.

"I don't know whether other agents share my opinion or whether clubs will follow my example, but I'm confident about the outcome."

Uefa, meanwhile, fully believes that FFP is in line with existing European law.

"The European Commission, the European parliament, the clubs, the leagues and the Players Union have all given their total support to Financial Fair Play," a statement form European football's governing body reads.

"Uefa believes that FFP is entirely in line with European law."

FFP was introduced by Uefa president Michel Platini with the idea to introduce more discipline and rationality in club football finances, to encourage clubs to compete within their revenues, to encourage long-term investments in the youth sector and infrastructure and to protect the long-term viability of European club football.

Official: Moyes to be next Manchester United manager

By Alex Young
May 9, 2013 4:00:00 PM

278393hp2.jpg

The Everton manager will take over at Old Trafford on July 1 after agreeing a six-year deal to become the successor to the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson

Manchester United have confirmed that David Moyes will replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford and will take over as manager at the end of the current season.

As exclusively revealed by Goal.com following the announcement of the 71-year-old's retirement, the Toffees boss had been identified as the outgoing manager's successor.

Moyes has agreed a six-year deal at the club, which will start on June 1, and will take his place at the Old Trafford helm with the blessing of Sir Alex.

"When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes we unanimously agreed on David Moyes. David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic," Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website.

"I've admired his work for a long time and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of Assistant Manager here. He was a young man then at the start of his career and has since gone on to do a magnificent job at Everton. There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club."

Everton announced earlier on Thursday that Moyes was set to leave Goodison Park at the end of the season.

The Scot acknowledged that Sir Alex will be a tough act to follow after accruing 38 trophies during his 26-year reign, but admitted that the opportunity could not be passed up.

Moyes added: "It’s a great honour to be asked to be the next Manager of Manchester United. I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done and for the club.

"I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn’t something that comes around very often and I’m really looking forward to taking up the post next season."

Moyes is now set to leave Everton after over a decade in charge, and the 50-year-old has thanked the club for their support and guidance during his tenure.

"I have had a terrific job at Everton, with a tremendous chairman and board of directors and a great set of players. Between now and the end of the season, I will do everything in my power to make sure we finish as high as possible in the table.

"Everton’s fantastic fans have played a big part in making my years at Goodison so enjoyable and I thank them wholeheartedly for the support they have given me and the players. Everton will be close to me for the rest of my life."

United chief executive, David Gill, added his own congratulations and backed Moyes to become a success at Old Trafford.

"I'm delighted that David has agreed to join Manchester United. He has done a terrific job at Everton and has all the qualities that we are looking for in a manager to succeed Alex."

‘No question he has all the qualities we expect' – Sir Alex Ferguson welcomes Moyes to Manchester United

The outgoing boss has thrown his full backing behind his successor, who will take the reins at Old Trafford on July 1 after signing a six-year contract

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has welcomed the decision to appoint David Moyes as his successor saying: "There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club".

In an official club statement released via the New York Stock Exchange, Sir Alex gave his fellow Scot the seal of approval, stating: "When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes we unanimously agreed on David Moyes.

"David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. I've admired his work for a long time and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of assistant manager here.

"He was a young man then at the start of his career and has since gone on to do a magnificent job at Everton.

"There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club".

Sir Bobby Charlton, who Sir Alex will be joining on the Old Trafford board of directors, also reserved special praise for Moyes, who he believes is in-tune with the club's ethos.

“I have always said that we wanted the next manager to be a genuine Manchester United man," Charlton explained.

"In David Moyes, we have someone who understands the things that make this such a special club.

"We have secured a man who is committed to the long-term and will build teams for the future as well as now. Stability breeds success.

“David has tremendous strength of character and recognises the importance of bringing young players through and developing them alongside world class talent.

At United, I think David will be able to express himself. I’m delighted he has accepted."

The Scot will take charge at Old Trafford from July 1 and has signed a six-year contract, expressing his delight at Sir Alex Ferguson's recommendation for him to take the role

David Moyes has spoken of his "great honour" to be asked to manage Manchester United after being confirmed as the man to replace Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Red Devils have released a statement revealing that the 50-year-old Everton boss will take charge at Old Trafford from July 1, having agreed to leave the Toffees when his contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

Moyes, who has signed a six-year contract, said in an official club statement released via the New York Stock Exchange: "It's a great honour to be asked to be the next manager of Manchester United.

"I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done and for the football club.

"I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn't something that comes around very often and I'm really looking forward to taking up the post next season."

The former Preston manager also spoke highly of Everton and the club's board and players, insisting he will strive to achieve a strong finish to the season at Goodison Park, before departing for Old Trafford.

"I have had a terrific job at Everton, with a tremendous chairman and board of directors and a great set of players," he added. "Between now and the end of the season, I will do everything in my power to make sure we finish as high as possible in the table.

"Everton's fantastic fans have played a big part in making my years at Goodison so enjoyable and I thank them wholeheartedly for the support they have given me and the players. Everton will be close to me for the rest of my life."

The Glazer family have also expressed their delight at Moyes' decision to accept the post at Old Trafford, with Joel Glazer confident the Scot will be able to continue Sir Alex's legacy of producing "flair football played by exciting, world class players".

Avie Glazer continued: "The search for a new manager has been very short. Alex was very clear with his recommendation and we are delighted that David has agreed to accept the job. He comes to us with excellent credentials and a strong track record.

"I know he is keen to get started and Ed [Woodward] will be sitting down with him as soon as the season is over to discuss plans for the summer and beyond."
