Football Association defends 5:15pm kick-off time for FA Cup final

The statement comes just days after the organisation came in for criticism from Wigan and Manchester City fans who accused them of prioritising commercial interests
The FA has defended their decision to schedule the FA Cup final at 5:15pm amid widespread castigation over the resulting transport issues facing Wigan and Manchester City supporters.
Both clubs have raised concerns that the timing of the even would hinder the travel plans for supporters making the trip from the north west, but English football's governing body insists the early-evening kick-off is not unusual for such an event.
“The FA would like to highlight that 5.15pm is a regular kick-off time in the football calendar” a statement on the FA’s official website reads.
“This time was agreed with major stakeholders and broadcasters and has been used across the game for a number of years for televised matches.
“In terms of transportation, a small percentage of Cup Final fans use the method of train travel.
“Additional coach services which National Express are running, including directly from Wembley Stadium, mean there are more options for fans returning north after the game from Wembley on Saturday 11 May.“
The statement goes on to explain that the later kick-off allows a greater number of fans to watch television coverage of the game, thus boosting the revenue potential of the event.
“The kick-off time is unchanged from last year and this allows more football fans around the country to watch The Cup Final in its entirety,” the statement continued.
“The domestic viewing figures for last year’s FA Cup Final, shown on ITV and ESPN, recorded a combined peak in-home audience of 11.7 million people in the UK.
“This was the highest peak viewing figure The FA Cup Final has achieved under the current TV deal and a higher audience than that of Bayern Munich v Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League Final.”
Earlier this week, the Wigan Supporters' Club spokesman Jason Taylor told the Guardian that the late timing of the game would leave fans of both Manchester City and Wigan unable to catch the last trains back to the north west, particularly if the result were to be decided in extra-time.
“It seems the FA are more interested in what the television companies want than the logistics of supporters getting to and from their final,” Taylor said.
“It’s not just us, it affects Manchester City as well.
“They are only 18 miles away and we will be using the same roads and, if it was possible, train lines. It was a nightmare for the semi-final.”

It took a hug from his father and a flashback for Craig Bellamy to realise the full scale of what he and his Cardiff City team-mates had achieved on Tuesday night. He doesn't have the psychological scars of some in that dressing room - people like Peter Whittingham and Kevin McNaughton who played for Cardiff in finals of the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Championship play-offs and lost each of them. Neither was he involved in last season's play-off semi-final disappointment.

Then on the Saturday we would be there again.'For him to see us go to the Premier League and for his son to play a part in that makes it even more special. It hit home to me a little bit. He said he will die a happy man.'Bellamy added: 'I am grateful to have played a small part in this club's future and past.'Yet there has been nothing small about the part Bellamy has played in this remarkable campaign in which promotion has been secured with three games remaining. He has not stood out from the rest, in words or deeds, quite as much as when he arrived for a season on loan from Manchester City in 2010. But his impact on the group in his second coming has been profound. 'Everyone looks up to him,' Whittingham told Sportsmail recently.

I didn't really feel for one minute that we wouldn't. Even after a setback Monday at training was the same - an honest group who were positive and wanted to work hard for one another.'The manager has instilled that in the players he has brought in. The Manchester United midfielder has been included along with team-mate Robin van Persie, Liverpool's Luis Suarez, Spurs forward Gareth Bale and Chelsea duo Eden Hazard and Juan Mata. The shortlist includes no defenders or goalkeepers, and no representation from champions Manchester City. The biggest surprise is the absence of Swansea forward Michu, who many believe to be the signing of the season.

PFA chairman chief executive Gordon Taylor has defended the presence of Suarez on the list.There is no doubt Suarez has been one of the stand-out players in the Barclays Premier League this campaign. Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Wayne Rooney that he is no longer guaranteed a place in the starting line-up at Manchester United. After playing the England striker in central midfield for the second game in a row at West Ham on Wednesday night and substituting him in the second half, Ferguson insisted he would do the same again.

Rooney is bound to have concerns about being played out of position and his future role at Old Trafford if he signs a new deal this summer. Negotiations are due to begin at the end of the season when the player will have the opportunity to air his grievances. Rooney has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain but Ferguson played down the speculation yesterday, saying: ‘I don’t think there is anything in that at all.’
However, the United manager stopped well short of assuring the 27-year-old that he will play in the more familiar forward role he has become accustomed to in his nine years at United. Asked if he sees Rooney’s long-term future in midfield, Ferguson replied: ‘It’s difficult to say. We’re picking teams to win and we did that at Stoke. I’ll be doing the same (against Aston Villa) on Monday.’Ferguson confirmed that he substituted Rooney for the second time in three games at West Ham because he wasn’t playing well enough.

He added: ‘As far as taking him off on Wednesday it was simple, he wasn’t playing as well as Shinji Kagawa and we had to get that goal that mattered. There are so many games where Wayne Rooney has been better than most players, but on the night Shinji was playing so well.’That assessment will undoubtedly concern Rooney, who has scored 197 goals for United but touched the ball just once in West Ham’s penalty box. He has been forced to play in a number of different positions since losing his place up front.

It’s unfortunate and it’s a bad blow.’
However, the United boss was more concerned with the treatment meted out to his players at Upton Park in midweek when David De Gea and Nemanja Vidic were hurt in collisions with Andy Carroll. Ferguson believes that Sam Allardyce’s complaints over Robin Van Persie’s disputed equaliser disguised the fact that Carroll should have been sent off. He added: ‘Vida has got a beautiful bruise on his cheekbone and we’re coming out of that war zone happy to see no-one seriously injured.‘It was a red card for Carroll, there’s no disputing that. Arsenal have made Stevan Jovetic one of their principal targets as they formalise their summer recruitment plans.
But The Sweeper understands that the Gunners' hopes of landing the Fiorentina striker are dependent on them securing a top-four Premier League finish.
Early talks with Jovetic's camp have revealed that the Montenegro international is keen on moving to Arsenal but one of his prime concerns is to play in next season's Champions League.
The Gunners are not hopeful of signing the forward without the carrot of Europe's biggest stage, something that Manchester City, another of the clubs pursuing the player, will almost certainly be able to offer.
The FA Cup finalists negotiated first option on Jovetic when they bought his former team-mate Matija Nastasic on deadline day last August for €14 million.
But the Montenegrin is likely to be a fall-back option only if City fail to secure the signing of one of their A-list striker targets, headed by Napoli's Edinson Cavani.
City pursued Jovetic as part of a double swoop last summer but Fiorentina held on to the 23-year-old fans’ favourite amid fears of a huge backlash from supporters if they sold him.
It is understood that Jovetic agreed to remain in Florence for another season on the proviso that he can leave in the forthcoming summer.

Arsenal co-owner Alisher Usmanov has been named as the wealthiest man in Britain by The Sunday Times's annual Rich List.
The Russian business magnate, who owns nearly 30 per cent of the north London club, replaces QPR stakeholder Lakshmi Mittal at the top of the list, now in its 25th year.
Usmanov has had a stake in the Gunners since 2007 and has repeatedly criticised the team’s ambition, particularly under majority shareholder Stan Kroenke.
His total wealth is measured at €15.5 billion, with his business interests ranging from iron ore to internet and mobile phone companies.
Mittal, who was part of the group who took control of QPR in 2007, dropped down to fourth after eight consecutive years at the top of the rankings, though is still worth €11.7bn.
One place behind him is Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, whose personal riches are listed as a total of €10.9bn.

Manchester City will demand at least €17.5 million from clubs hoping to sign Micah Richards this summer, Goal.com understands.
The 24-year-old has indicated to City officials that he may look elsewhere at the end of the season, with Pablo Zabaleta's form and a succession of injuries having hampered his progress under Roberto Mancini.
The City boss would be open to allowing Richards a move away this summer after failing to receive an offer for him in January, despite interest from AC Milan, and would look to accrue between €17.5m and €23m for his services.
Richards made his first appearance for the Premier League champions since October, having recovered from knee surgery, on Wednesday against Wigan but Mancini was critical of the defender's performance, which lasted 83 minutes.
"I think that he needs to work a lot," the Italian asserted. "I didn't like it [the performance]. I am happy because he comes back to play but I thought that he was in better form."
Richards's long-term absence has seen Zabaleta shine at right back for the champions this season and the England international knows that he may have to move in order to secure consistent first-team opportunities.
Speaking following his return against Roberto Martinez's side, Richards voiced his frustration over being out of first-team contention for so long.
"Five-and-a-half, six months - it is quite frustrating to be out so long," he admitted. "When I came back I was playing really well.
"Now Zaba has been class this season. It is going to be hard to get back in but you know what football is like, one minute you are in and the next you are out. When I am in I am going to have to take my chance."
Arsenal and Liverpool are reported to be monitoring Richards's progress ahead of the summer transfer window but City would rather sell to a non-Premier League club.

The FA is now likely to action against him again, with experts calling for him to be banned for at least the final four games of the Premier League season. And his club is under huge pressure to kick the player out of their club, with its managing director Ian Ayre admitting: 'His behaviour is not befitting of any player wearing a Liverpool shirt.' After the match Suarez tweeted: 'I'm sad for what happened this afternoon, I apologize Ivanovic and all football world for my inexcusable behaviour. I'm so sorry about it!! 'I've just spoken to Ivanovic on the phone and I could apologise directly to him. Thanks for accepting.' But it may not be enough as manager Brendan Rodgers admitted that no player was irreplaceable.

During the incident, captured by TV cameras, Suarez – who earlier had given away a penalty – appeared to grab hold of the defender’s arm and bite his elbow.
He escaped unpunished as the referee failed to see the disgraceful act, and went on to score an equaliser. Last night he apologised to Ivanovic and the ‘football world’ for ‘my inexcusable behaviour’ via Twitter, saying he was ‘sad’ at the incident.

Former club captain and Daily Mail columnist Jamie Redknapp said what Suarez did was inexcusable. ‘He got a seven-game ban at Ajax for doing the same thing. He obviously has a real problem,’ said Redknapp.

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez is back in the spotlight after appearing to bite Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic on the arm during the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Anfield, going on to score a late equaliser.
Here are some of the previous controversies surrounding the Uruguayan forward.
February 2007: Suarez made his international debut for Uruguay against Colombia but was sent off in the final minutes after being shown a second yellow card for dissent.
November 2007: Joined Ajax from Uruguayan side Nacional but he was later suspended by the Dutch giants after a half-time dressing-room altercation with team-mate Albert Luque.
July 2010: During the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals, Suarez prevented Ghana's Dominic Adiyiah from scoring in the final minute with a deliberate handball on the line and was subsequently sent off. A penalty was awarded but missed by Asamoah Gyan and footage showed Suarez celebrating on the sidelines. Uruguay eventually went through to the last four on penalties.
November 2010: Suarez was handed a seven-match ban by the Dutch FA and fined by his club for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal during an Eredivisie match.
October 2011: Following his move to Liverpool in January 2011, he was involved in a tackle with Everton's Jack Rodwell and goes down with apparent minimal contact. Rodwell was then sent off.
October 2011: Suarez was alleged to have racially abused Manchester United's Patrice Evra during a Premier League match. Suarez was later found guilty by an independent regulatory commission and banned for eight matches and fined £40,000.
December 2011: Was seen making an offensive gesture towards Fulham fans. At this time he had already been charged by the Football Association over the racism incident, although not yet punished, but was handed a further one-match ban for the gesture.
February 2012: United and Liverpool met again at Old Trafford, but more controversy blew up as Suarez refused to shake Evra's hand before kick-off.
October 2012: Celebrated a goal against Everton by diving in front of Toffees boss David Moyes who had earlier claimed that "divers2 such as Suarez were putting fans off the English game.
January 2013: Handles the ball prior to scoring Liverpool's winner in the FA Cup third round tie at Mansfield.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has revealed he has been fined by the club after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, with the fee being donated to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.
Unseen by match officials, the 26-year-old lashed out at the arm of Serbian in the 2-2 draw at Anfield, with the Professional Footballers Association since announcing they are to offer the striker anger management counselling.
Suarez tweeted: "For my unacceptable behaviour yesterday the club has fined me today, I have asked the club to donate the money to the Hillsborough Family Support Group for the inconvenience I have created to the Liverpool fans and to Ivanovic."
Speaking after the game yesteday, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and managing director Ian Ayre hinted that the club would take action against Suarez.
Ayre, who cancelled a trip to Australia in order to personally deal with the matter, said the incident did not "befit" the behaviour of a Liverpool player.
"Luis is aware that he has let himself and everyone associated with the club down," Ayre told the club's official website.
"We will deal with the matter internally and await any action from the Football Association."
The Football Association are yet to announce their own course of action, but Suarez will likely face a lengthy ban.

Papiss Cisse and his girlfriend have been targeted by racists who are opposed to their mixed-race relationship.The Senegalese striker, 27, is going out with Rachelle Graham, 22, the current Miss Newcastle. She was undertaking a 13,000ft skydive to help raise money to buy an ambulance for Senegal and the pair received abuse on a website because of it.

Police are investigating the abuse as a hate crime after Rachelle's mum reported the website.Rachelle told Sky Tyne and Wear: 'It is horrific. The website targets the pair of us because I am white and Papiss is black.'Some of it is really threatening. I don’t understand why people would say these things, especially as Papiss is such a nice guy.'I guess we just have to ignore it and move on.'Rachelle managed to raise £900 for Cisse's charity, Friends of Sedhiou.

A fake Twitter account was set up in her name and that other Newcastle players' wives started to receive racist messages. That account has now been suspended.Rachelle, a cafe owner, told The Mirror: 'At first the messages came from a US website which targets white people who are going out with black people.'The person behind that may also have set up the fake Twitter account in my name. It was made to look as much like mine as possible, using my photos and virtually the same address.

'The first I knew of it was when I started to get messages from friends responding to tweets I had not sent. But I think it’s not on and we have to do something to stop it.'

Sir Alex Ferguson praised Manchester United's consistency as they won back the Premier League title after losing last season's race on goal difference to Manchester City. The United manager also described Robin van Persie's second goal as the 'goal of the century' after the Dutchman's volley put the game out of reach of Aston Villa. He said: 'I'm delighted for all the players, for myself, the staff and the supporters.'You can go on and on about losing a title (last season) but at the end of the day, our consistency for the last 20 years is unbelievable.

Speaking of his second goal, Van Persie modestly added: 'It was a great ball from Wayne, so the only thing I had to do was guide it right and hit it properly and it went in great but more important was the result.'Rooney revealed last year's heartbreak against City, who won the title in the last minute of the 2011-12 season, spurred them on to glory this season.
