<!-- Begin .post --> Local & Foreign Activists fights againt Death Penalty together at Speaker's Corner

It's been raining the whole day, but unsure yet if Singapore had flooded again today.

Under mild rain at Hong Lim Park Speakers' Corner, more than a hundred activists turned up at an even organized by The Online Citizen TOC, which is a campaign against Death Penalty, and for convict Yong Vui Kong. The even was prepared starting 1515hr, and went into full swing by about 1600hr, and completed just after 1700hr.

Mr Alan Shadrake a British writer who had been charged by the shameless famiLEE LEEgime for being critical against their judiciary was strongly welcomed by supporters.

Local political leaders including members of various political parties were at the event. Dr Chee Soon Juan, and Mr. Keneth Jayaretnam were both seen in the videos I recorded.

famiLEE LEEgime sent under-cover spies to monitor the event, which is entirely no surprising.

The event proved that it is indeed very stupid for famiLEE LEEgime to have Mr. Shadrake charged, because he got instantly famous and his book became much more popular than originally expected. The defiant author is very well strengthen and strongly supported. At Hong Lim Park he got warmly welcomed and received, and I saw him so popularly motivated, so busy signing autographs, being interviewed, taking photos and videos with supporters. He indeed became much more popular than our local political party leaders, and I am absolutely no exaggerating at all.

The lame silly famiLEE LEEgime had yet again created their own enemy out of no where, and then strengthen them totally out of proportion. This is not the 1st time, and will not be the last either. :-)

You support unconditionally?

Frankly I support THE RIGHTS OF FREE SPEECH - of the anti-death-penalty activists, but I don't fully support anti-death-penalty itself. The abuse of death penalty is what I am against.

I will support death penalty to be used against the worst corruptions by politicians.;)

I back the campaign of Sg Anti-DP activists because the famiLEE LEEgime is trying to silent them and persecute some of them.

there are pros and cons of death penalty. The best way to settle this issue is a national referendum on abolition of death penalty and respect the majority wishes.

Uncle Yap, have you talked with our Sg Anti-DP activists, do they believe a death penalty referendum is a possible way to settle this issue or do they think a referendum is totally unnecessary since abolishing DP are fundamental human rights but I believe their thinkings are religious beliefs than anything else. From my understanding, most Anti-DP activists will reject a national referendum in their countries, they will find all sort of reasons for rejecting a referendum but deep down the main reason are they know they will confirm lose a DP referendum, their country majority support the death penalty law.

Re: Local & Foreign Activists fights againt Death Penalty together at Speaker's Corne

Old fart has a new enemy to deal with, his old POMie mate from from England. It is you guy that keep Old fart going and now he cannot retire and will go for next election. So old fart now got excuse to be elected again. If by freak election old fart lost his GRC, then whole PAP can run road liao!

Oppo must gang up to stand at old fart GRC and will see how he is 1) going to rig his own voters figures 2) to see how popular he is now judging his vote counts?

Remember, John Howard, the former Oz PM got voted out by his ward because someone put a charmismatic figure into his ward and the voters kick Howard out.

Don't be sway be 154th Old fart is still popular with his voters. Old fart put himself in GRC has his own fear factor 'what if' and not because old fart lend his strength to new MPs to win.

Now old fart had his old Pommie friend on the opposite side, Oppo can take this chance to make this POMie Shadrake their political Advisor and apply PR for him ... hehehe

The referendum process is THE FINAL (ultimately) in decision. There is nothing more final and powerful in terms of democratic legislation.

I personally think Singapore isn't ready for that process yet. I think we need to do more things before taking that referendum step (if necessary).

Practically, do you think LEEgime will proceed to hold that process at all, in the 1st place, if not then we have to either do something to 1st replace them or compel them to obey to us - the Singaporean people, before we can see any possibility of that referendum.

Beside that, I think there are many more things such as debate and studies on this DP issue, we can do online opinion poll and street opinion polls, we can hold seminars, and conferences, we can study and share / compare experience with people of as many countries as possible. These are due process Singaporean people need to go through before coming to the decision step.

If we could all come to agreement (I seriously doubt) within these process, we might be able to skip a formal referendum, or parliamentary vote.
(If survey & debates already showed opinion of people, and the MPs know how to do their jobs, they should know what to do, instead of having us the citizens to walk up to ballot boxes for any referendum.)

Lots of the aboves are actually the jobs of the media, academies, legal professionals, activists, NGOs, govt bodies, etc - if ALL of them know their own social roles and duties.

If the country knows how to go about that properly, then Singapore would had proven itself to the world to have grown mature, and became more 1st world.;)

With all the un$crupulous lawyers around who will turn an innocent into guilty, it is better not to have death penalty, in case an innocent get executed.

Re: Local & Foreign Activists fights againt Death Penalty together at Speaker's Corne

Now you know why I have stated that you have absolutely no clue about politics or the instruments of government or even the concept of democracy.

What do you think will happen when a referendum on taxes, carpark fines, rules and laws on public conduct are held. You want to respect the wishes of the majority.

Referendums are not held for such things. They are held for serious matters affecting the future of the country and the people in it. Its about secession, mergers, type of government, new constitutions, etc.

Why don't you go to any neighbourhood library and start educating yourself and bring along the freedom fighter as well.

Many countries and states have held national referendum on death penalty. I personally believe like Uncle Yap say - DP must go through it's due process before heading for a referendum. DP is a serious matter - your life & mine, I think it need a referendum. You are free to disagree with me. My issue with those anti DP activists are for other reasons, not your reasoning.

The Scandinavian countries do that, anyway 98% of peasants wouldn't demand a referendum on carpark fines. Your analogy is way off as usual.

Fortunately for Singapore we have one M Ravi.

He fought for so many DP convicts Singaporeans or otherwise, not for $$$$$$$ at all, but for Justice & Compassion.:) Thumbs up for Ravi!

When famiLEE LEEgime had Ravi locked up in IMH, I was the only activist who staged protest demanding his release (I took 2 supporters' help). Regretful that these anti-DP activists & people who had benefited from selfless contributions of Ravi, never stood up for for Ravi sufficiently, when he was himself in the deepest shit.:(

I like to add that referendum is an ultimate exercise of decision / choice. Therefore we should not do one without due considerations, & we must all make a very well informed decision. The power of referendum is too strong, and often to difficult to reverse when if that become necessary at much later time, under quite different circumstance.

This can be illustrated by the rigidity of Mandatory DP, which all judges said their hands are tied, even CJ can not defy the Mandatory nature stated by statute.

For referendum, only another referendum can overcome it lawfully, even parliament & president can not override referendum.

Every tom, dick and harry issue have a referendum, where would it end?

Btw we are here tallking abt abolishing of the death penatly. But have anyone notice it seem to be a session to abolish the death penalty for foreginers and not for Singaporeans?

Why do they only make noise when a foreginer is sentence to death and not when a Singaporean is sentence to death?

Think about it.....

your answer.

There always a due process of serious discussions before taking the referendum vote. Your analogy is way off - we have 1 and peasants would demand referendum on every tom to harry issue. It's not like that.

Re: Local & Foreign Activists fights againt Death Penalty together at Speaker's Corne

I would like the forum to consider the following point regarding DP:

The society's law and order system, here and in most other places, is built to give security to every individual based on the knowledge that crimes committed by the culprits against their victims will be punished according to law. Therefore the security received by every person against being e.g. murdered is provided by the fact that the murder convict will face DP.

Pse leave the drug crimes aside in this consideration for now. Pse concentrate on straight forward murder to make things simpler for now.

There is an equality or balance existing between the crime & the relevant penalty. This is important in order for deterrence to work. When deterrence failed then the basic security for law & order will fail.

The fact I need to highlight is that any convict can only be executed once. But a serial killer can and murder dozens - nothing new in criminal history. Toa Payoh's Adrain Lim was convicted for 3 murders instead of just 1. But he can only be executed once.

The imbalance here is very serious. Do you want to see this imbalance worsen by abolishing DP? If yes, then what do you propose to be done to keep this balance and keep the society's most basic security / law & order?:rolleyes:

Forgiveness and Compassion makes people feel noble and holly or spiritually high, we can all understand this. But THERE IS A PRICE for this, by abolishing DP. Can we afford? For those who seek to feel satisfied by being so noble and forgiving by abolishing DP to save lives of DP convicts, I ask you all please NOT to turn a BLIND EYE towards the ADDITIONAL LOST OF LIVES of victims of crimes caused by the REDUCED DETERRENCE after abolishment of DP.

Are these additional victims dying more innocent and wrongful deaths compared against the convicts who got executed?

You can not convince people if you said no additional victims of crimes will die via the lack of deterrence by abolishment of DP. Evil Selfish Bastards ALWAYS take more advantage of kindly given FORGIVENESS, they will not appreciate, if even they will repent, that is always AFTER instead of before, crime had been committed - which in this case it is innocent victims' deaths.

How do we justify the losses of lives of innocent victims of crimes when we want to abolish DP to forgive criminals who are evil & selfish in causing deaths of their victims?

How do we justify the losses and sufferings of victims of a serial killer who killed say 10 innocent victims, and we spared the killer from DP?

I can not! I personally see no justification. I think it is totally unfair.

I am therefore against only the mandatory DP for small amount of drugs, but I don't support totally abolishing DP, because many criminals can only be deterred
or punished by executions, otherwise more INNOCENT deaths will result from crimes.
