Leslie Chew: Sedition charge withdrawn, contempt of court charge remains

The government has announced that it will not charge "Demon-cratic Singapore" cartoonist Leslie Chew with sedition. The decision of the Attorney-General's Chambers is spot on – notwithstanding the wishes of a grand total of 140 individuals who signed a petition asking the government to throw the book at him. As this blog pleaded three months ago, if the government feared that Chew's criticism of its race policies would have any traction, it should respond with arguments, not force. Chew is not off the hook yet. While the Sedition Act won't be used against him, he has committed contempt of court, the AGC says. His fate now hinges partly on how the court reads the law on scandalising the judiciary. Singapore has traditionally taken a tough line. Recall how three activists were jailed five years ago for wearing t-shirts emblazoned with kangaroos in judges' robes. -

Yes, the contempt of court charge very likely to stick. As you said, S'pore has traditionally taken a tough line. But a huge exception was made for the Old Fart's daughter who some years back publicly criticized the court's decision to jail Tang Wee Sung for fraudulently buying a kidney, nothing happened to her. When the then AG rebutted her criticisms as he had no other choice since it become a public matter, it was he who got sacked instead.

Why should the judges be above criticism? They are not gods. The judgments should be subjected to critique. And let the people decide if judges are credible and deserves to be sitting on the bench. With so much power, yet here is nothing to hold judges accountable for their judgments and actions.

Three Singaporeans have been jailed after being charged with contempt of court for showing up at Singapore’s Supreme Court wearing T-shirts depicting kangaroos in judges robes.

Isrizal Bin Mohamed Isa and Muhammad Shafi’ie Syahmi Bin Sariman were sentenced to seven days’ jail, while Tan Liang Joo John received 15 days imprisonment. They were each ordered to pay $3,305 in costs.

Tan is the Assistant Secretary-General of the opposition Singapore Democratic Party, led by Chee Soon Juan.

The three had worn the T-shirts at a court hearing in May to determine the damages that Chee Soon Juan and his sister Chee Siok Chin were to pay after being found guilty of defaming Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and former leader Lee Kuan Yew.
