La Liga clubs call off strike action

After saying they would boycott the first Spanish league games, 'rebel' clubs have backed down and the new season will start as planned

Aug 14, 2012 2:40:00 PM

By Stephen Gillett

62430hp2.jpg

The curtain on the new Primera Division season will be raised this Saturday, after the threat of a potential strike was averted.

Some thirteen La Liga teams had mooted the idea of boycotting the opening fixtures of the season to protest against inequalities in the distribution of television revenues.

However, the president of the Spain's Liga ruling body (LFP), Jose Luis Astiazaran, confirmed that the new campaign will start on Saturday, as planned.

"The games this weekend will be held on schedule," said Astiazaran in a brief statement made to the media on Tuesday.

The strike action was avoided after a meeting on Tuesday between rebel clubs, LFP representatives and others such as Spain's Secretary of State for Sport, Miguel Cardinal.

Champions Real Madrid begin their new term by taking on Valencia on Sunday, while Barcelona play Real Sociedad on the same evening.

Jose Mourinho says he should now be known as the Only One

The 49-year-old tactician revealed he should be called the "Only One" considering the long list of titles he has won during his managerial career

Aug 13, 2012 7:01:00 PM

By Ryan Bailey

202080hp2.jpg

Jose Mourinho believes he should be labelled the “Only one” instead of the “Special One”, after becoming the only coach to win the so-called top three European Leagues.

Speaking to Portuguese television channel SIC on Monday, Mourinho explained that as his managerial career has progressed, he has become less selfish and less focused on individual goals.

"Things have been going well for me, thank God. I am focused on others much more these days. The pleasure of winning with Inter Milan was seeing a club, which had not won for 50 years, winning again.

That is what entices me more and more, instead of pursuing individual goals." He said.

He won La Liga last season with current club Real Madrid, he won Serie A twice with Inter, the Premier League twice with Chelsea and the Portuguese Liga twice with Porto. On top of all that, he also won the Champions League with both Porto and Inter.

"Like me or not, I am the only one who won the world's three most important leagues. So, maybe instead of the 'Special One', people should start calling me the 'Only One'," Mourinho said in an interview that aired on Monday.

The Real Madrid boss was nicknamed “The Special One” during his time in England after calling himself just that during a press conference following his switch from Porto to the Blues in 2004.

Real Madrid kick off the new campaign with a clash against Valencia this weekend.

Mourinho: Matching Fergie is mission impossible

The 49-year-old says that replicating in Spain what the veteran Scotsman has achieved in the Premier League is highly improbable

Aug 19, 2012 3:10:00 PM

By Mohammed Ali

203939hp2.jpg

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho says that following the success of Sir Alex Ferguson with the La Liga champions would be very difficult.

The veteran Scot has been in charge of the Red Devils for over 25 years, however, the Portuguese does not believe that he will match his counterpart's record while at the Spanish capital.

Asked about his personal aspirations, the Portuguese said that he was focused on the next four years at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"Copying Ferguson is difficult. Mission impossible. That is because I won't be here for 79 years. I signed here for four years, and if we signed it, we signed it to do so," he explained toAS.

"My intention is to keep winning and keep making a fantastic team with its own identity and, in my opinion, [fantastic] football."

The Blancos boss also refused to be drawn on big rivals Barcelona due to his focus on his side's Liga opener against Valencia on Sunday.

"I have no interest in talking about a rival that is not Valencia. They had a good season, but what Madrid did was extraordinary. Emery did a good job."

Real Madrid's opening La Liga game is against Valencia on Sunday night, and kicks off at 19:00CET.

Barcelona 0-1 Sampdoria: Early Soriano strike sinks Los Cules in Joan Gamper Cup

With the first-team squad playing just two days ago, Vilanova opted to field a mixture of their 'B' side with fringe players, but they simply could not contain the Serie A side

By Joe Krishnan

204512hp2.jpg

Barcelona have lost 1-0 in the Joan Gamper Cup after being overpowered by a more experienced Sampdoria side at the Camp Nou.

Roberto Soriano gave the visitors a shock lead inside 2 minutes and, despite being dominant in possession throughout the game, the hosts couldn't find an equaliser as the Italian side won the trophy.

The Blaugrana, having won 5-1 against Real Sociedad just two days ago, opted for a mix of fringe players with some of their brightest youngsters, such as Gerard Deulofeu and Jean-Marie Dongou also featuring for the Catalan giants. Spain international David Villa, recovering from a broken leg, also continued on the road to recovery after suffering the injury before Euro 2012, and many hoped he could boost his confidence with another goal.

Eric Abidal, recovering from a liver transplant, was applauded by the fans after walking out onto the pitch. The club also decided to parade new signing Alex Song, who had completed his €19 million move from Arsenal earlier in the day.

But after a long opening to the match, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock some 90 seconds from the kick-off, with Soriano netting the opener with a superb diving header.

Barcelona looked to respond and starlet Deulofeu, starting from the right-hand side, delivered a dangerous cross but the ball evaded Villa and Ibrahim Afellay.

Chances were at a premium in what could've only been described as an exhibition match, with Sampdoria more than happy to sit back on their one goal cushion.

And young midfielder Sergi Roberto had a golden chance to equalise but could not find the net just before the half-hour mark.

Argentine striker Maxi Lopez, who played for Barcelona in the 2005-06 season, then came close to adding to Sampdoria's lead but could not find a way past Jose Pinto, with the veteran keeper pulling off a marvellous save to deny the 28-year-old.

Afellay then had a decent chance to level the scores shortly before half-time, but his effort whistled over the crossbar as Barcelona headed into the interval behind.

Vilanova sought to introduce some fresh life into the side after half-time, with Sergi Gomez replacing Andreu Fontas at the heart of defence.

But after a slow start, Sampdoria threatened to add to their lead, with Nicola Pozzi agonisingly close to making it 2-0, with the 26-year-old unfortunate to see his effort strike the post.

With the match becoming more a formality for Sampdoria, Vilanova again opted to give his young starlets a chance to impress, with the impressive Sergi Roberto coming off for Patric.

Another exciting starlet, Dongou, was brought on for Afellay and showed glimpses of the ability that has seen him touted as the next Samuel Eto'o.

And as the game slowed with the passing becoming more a training exercise for Barcelona, Sampdoria were the winners as the final whistle blew to hand them a shock victory.

After least season's eye-gouging, Mourinho and Vilanova square up again in Super Cup

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTERPUBLISHED: 10:34 GMT, 23 August 2012 | UPDATED: 10:47 GMT, 23 August 2012

Real Madrid and Barcelona meet in the season's first El Clasico on Thursday in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup. Bragging rights will be up for grabs after the capital club won the La Liga title for the first time since 2008 while Barca had to settle for the Copa del Rey.

But the match will also see Madrid manager Jose Mourinho come face to face with his opposite number Tito Vilanova who he poked in the eye in last year's corresponding fixture.

Collision course: Jose Mourinho (left) and Tito Vilanova will meet for the fist time since their clash last year

Barcelona won 5-4 on aggregate but the second leg will be remembered for the unsavoury post-match violence. After Mourinho lashed out at Pep Guardiola's assistant, Vilanova retaliated by slapping the Portuguese. Both were handed bans which were later revoked.Vilanova took charge of the Catalan club when Guardiola stepped down this summer but Mourinho has played down last season's confrontation.

'This isn't about Pep or Tito, this is about [playing] Barca and that's how we're approaching it,' he said.'I think it's a game that will have little effect [on the season]. If I could choose, I'd choose what happened last year where we lost the Super Cup and won the league.

'If losing is a motivation for winning the league, I'd sign off on it now.'It's a team with practically all the same players from last season and their style, which could change because Vilanova will have to have some way of differentiating himself. Barcelona is the same team that we've seen in recent years, a quality team with great players. It doesn't seem very different to me from last season's team'.

Barcelona 3 Real Madrid 2: Xavi and Messi rule as Vilanova's men earn slim advantage

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 23:03 GMT, 23 August 2012 | UPDATED: 23:26 GMT, 23 August 2012

Barcelona came from behind to take a slender lead from the first leg of the Spanish Supercopa at the Nou Camp.
Cristiano Ronaldo headed Real into the lead against the run of play 10 minutes into the second half from Mesut Ozil's corner, but Barcelona responded as Pedro showed great poise to slot home a minute later.

Substitutes: Adan, Jesus, Varane, Nacho, Morata, Diarra, Granero

Ronaldo 55, Di Maria 85

The action then raced from end to end and it was the hosts who forged ahead 20 minutes from time when Lionel Messi scored from the penalty spot after Sergio Ramos had brought down Andres Iniesta. Then a terrific jinking run from Iniesta freed Xavi to stroke home Barcelona's third goal seven minutes later. However, the visitors were gifted a way back into the tie five minutes from time when Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes tried to dribble around Angel Di Maria and only succeeded in gifting the Argentinian an open goal. Barcelona were deserving of the victory but may rue not taking full advantage after dominating for large spells against a Real side who failed to find the cohesion that had seen them go unbeaten in three of their last four trips to the Nou Camp.

Easy does it: Angel di Maria hits back for Madrid

Messi had the first real chance of the game when a typically sharp Barcelona passing exchange freed Dani Alves down the right and his cut-back found the Argentinian on the edge of the penalty area, but his left-footed drive flew just off target. The world player of the year then had an even better opportunity from similar range as he skipped past Alvaro Arbeloa but this time pulled his shot wide of the other upright. Real were struggling to manage any prolonged possession and were relieved to see referee Carlos Clos Gomez wave away appeals for a penalty when Alexis Sanchez tumbled in the box under pressure from Ramos.

Duo: Xavi (centre) and Iniesta (right) pulled the strings as usual

However, for all their dominance Barcelona only had another two long-range efforts on goal as Pedro's drive was tipped over by Iker Casillas before Xavi shot just over from similar range. And it was the visitors who took the lead 10 minutes into the second period as Ozil's corner was bulleted in by Ronaldo for his fourth goal in his last four away games against Barcelona. The lead lasted less than a minute as a wonderful ball over the top from Javier Mascherano found Pedro in behind Fabio Coentrao and the Spanish international slotted past Casillas.

On the move: Ronaldo gets a pass away after escaping the attentions of Javier Mascherano (right) and Adriano

The game then became increasingly stretched as both sides tired slightly from playing in the still searing heat, despite the late kick-off time, and the visitors' luck with Gomez eventually ran out as Iniesta was brought down inside the area by Ramos and Messi stepped up to thunder home the penalty. Moments later Iniesta showed incredible speed of foot to dance past three Real challenges and slip a pass through for Xavi to sidefoot past Casillas. Messi then had a great chance to all but seal the trophy but he was denied from point-blank range by Casillas, and within seconds the complexion of the tie had completely changed as Valdes' error allowed Di Maria to give Madrid a lifeline heading into the return at the Bernabeu next Wednesday.

Supercopa tie still 'completely open', stresses Vilanova

The Barcelona coach was impressed with his team's 3-2 victory over Real Madrid but is aware that his players will have to finish the task at the Santiago Bernabeu

Tito Vilanova tasted success on his Clasico debut as a coach, as Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-2 at Camp Nou, but was quick to stress that the Supercopa tie remains finely poised ahead of next week's return at the Bernabeu.

The former assistant to Pep Guardiola was content to have emerged victorious against Jose Mourinho but is aware that there is a long way to go before his side can collect the trophy.

Speaking to the media post-match, he stated: "I think we played a good game, we had control most of the time, against Madrid you can't expect not to give away chances.

"Of course, this result isn't decisive, for either of the teams. The tie is still completely open, certainly against a team like Madrid. They have talented players, they can score from few chances."

The 42-year-old also refused to blame Victor Valdes after Angel Di Maria capitalised on his goalkeeping error to bring Real Madrid back into the tie in the closing stages.

He added: "He has given us a lot the past years, he should continue.

"4-1 was close, it became 3-2, that's football, it can happen. But I stick with how we played. Now, off to the Bernabeu."

Barcelona visit Osasuna this Sunday in La Liga before the second leg of the Supercopa at the Santiago Bernabeu next Wednesday evening.

'I didn't come to replace Aguero or Forlan, but to make my own mark' - Radamel Falcao

The Colombian striker discussed Atletico Madrid, his adaptation to Europe with Porto and his early beginnings at River Plate in an in-depth interview with Goalcom

Aug 25, 2012 8:00:00 AM

EXCLUSIVE
By Martin del Palacio Langer | Goal.com Spain Chief Editor

paraweb.jpg

Radamel Falcao Garcia is one of the most in-demand players in European football. Ever since his arrival on the continent in 2009-10, the striker has not stopped scoring goals. First with Porto, where he was proclaimed champion of Portugal and won the Europa League, and then with Atletico Madrid, where he went on to claim another continental crown in an exact repeat of the previous campaign.

In total, the Colombian attacker, who made his professional debut with River Plate in Argentina, has scored 65 goals in 85 games since moving to Europe, and is considered by many to be the third best player in La Liga, behind only legendary pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Goalcom spoke to the Colombian striker about his career, his past, present and future, touching on many of the relevant topics in today's game. The result is a fascinating insight into one of the world's finest footballers.

Was the name Falcao chosen because of the Brazilian international from the 1980s?

RF: Yes, my dad was a big fan of Falcao and so, when I was born, he didn't think twice about giving me the name. I am used to people calling me Falcao. My father is also named Radamel, so I like to be identified more by the name Falcao.

What is your first memory of football? Were you one of those kids who always kicks a ball around?

RF: Yes, exactly. From when I got up in the morning I was playing with the ball, for as long as I could.
I tried to sneak away any time I could and play with my friends. I did everything to play football.

You were very young when you went to River Plate, and you hadn't even made your debut in Colombia. What was it like to live far away from home at such a young age?

RF: It's true. I went alone. The first four years I was in a residence at River, where they house players who aren't from Buenos Aires. That's something that helped me mature and grow both in a sporting sense and on a personal level. I lived with [Javier] Mascherano for two years and with several players who became professionals in Argentina.

Why do you think you were able to grow and triumph at River, when other players weren't able to?

RF: I think because of the discipline and commitment I had with myself and with football. That, in a given moment, is the difference between a player who has talent and one who is disciplined, consistent, perseverant.

But then the team fell apart ...

RF: The last years at River were hard, I couldn't enjoy my time as River were crumbling as an institution. Things were not right with the structure of the club itself, not just the football. Then one thing led to another and the team went broke and were relegated. It was hard for me even watching it from afar because I love River and it is more than a football club for me.

There were lots of rumours about a move to Europe, but when you left it wasn't to one of the strongest leagues. What made you decide to join Porto?

RF: There was a time where I felt I had completed a cycle at River and I really wanted to experience Europe. Porto offered me that opportunity and were very interested in me. As I realised when I arrived, it is a very good institution, very structured and very successful, which gives players the chance to grow and really helped me. It was a season that marked my career, how many titles we won and the importance of them. It is a season that I will never forget and neither will the people, the fans of Porto and world and European football.

Many Latin American footballers struggle to adapt to European football, but you were quite the opposite. How did you manage to acclimatise yourself so quickly?

RF: Fortunately, I adapted very quickly to European football. First in Porto and then when I was transferred to the Spanish league, which is the most competitive in the world. I had no problem fitting in the teams, with my team-mates and to understand the system that both clubs used. I have been able to deliver results and be effective for the institutions I have played for. I think Porto gave me everything I needed to showcase my skills, so I just had to focus on giving the team the best of my potential. They put me in the right system and in the right position, they did what they had to do to simplify my efforts and help the team.

Again, you were linked with many clubs, but you ended up joining Atletico, a big club with lots of tradition but one which had gone a long time without winning one of the top titles ...

RF: After very successful years in Porto, I thought it was the right time to make the leap to a major league. I wanted the challenge of coming to Spain and playing in one of the best leagues in the world with the best players. It was a challenge for me. Atletico gave me the chance to come, to try to fight with the bigger teams, to try to reach the Champions League, to win the Europa League again. We managed to do well in Europe but were not good enough in the league. I think, all in all, it was a positive first year.

Could you have joined an even bigger club? Were there offers?

RF: There were some offers, from different parts of Europe. But in the end I chose Atletico because they were the ones that showed me that they wanted me and made a big effort to bring me.

Where does your 'Tiger' nickname originate from and what was it like to pose with one?

RF: They call me the Tiger from my time at River. A team-mate thought it represented my style and started calling me that. It stuck, to the point that last season I had to pose with one. They asked me to touch it, but I couldn't, it was frightening! I caressed a cub though, it was a great experience all in all.

Atletico struggled to perform in the key moments prior to your arrival, but you were fundamental in last season's Europa League success. Do you think you have changed the mentality of the club?

RF: Everywhere I go, I am my own fiercest rival, I push myself to the maximum, set new goals and put pressure on myself to excel. But I also realise that top clubs do not give you much time and you have to deliver immediately.

I imagine it wasn't at all easy to arrive at Atletico in the shadow of Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero, who both left last summer ...

RF: I knew that Forlan and Aguero were idols here, but I didn't think I was coming to replace them or do what they had done. I just wanted to leave my mark on the institution, help them with goals and help the team improve in relation to the previous season. I always put pressure on myself and that helps bring out the best in me. I knew that if I did the right things that would somehow help the team make things better than how they were when they were here. But I wouldn't think of making the fans forget them because I think they are great players who did so much for the institution.

La Liga preview: Real look to respond

24 August 2012

287557header.jpg

Reigning champions Real Madrid will look to bounce back from their midweek 3-2 Supercopa de Espana defeat to arch rivals Barcelona on Sunday.Jose Mourinho's men travel to Getafe for their second match of the La Liga season still looking for their first win.

Real could only draw 1-1 at home to Valencia while Barca, who are away to Osasuna, picked up all three points with a 5-1 demolition of Real Sociedad.

While the season is still in its infancy, the early two-point gap will be something that Real fans will find unpalatable.

Meanwhile, Barca coach Tito Vilanova has rallied to the cause of goalkeeper Victor Valdes, whose blunder on Thursday enabled Real to score what could be an all-important second goal when the two sides meet again in the second leg on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi's goal from the penalty spot against Real took his tally for the campaign to three goals, following up his brace in the thrashing of Real Sociedad.

Both Getafe and Osasuna are still looking for their first point of the season.

In their opening matches, Getafe went down 2-1 at Sevilla while Osasuna suffered a 2-0 defeat at Deportivo La Coruna.

On Saturday, Real Sociedad will attempt to rebound from their slow start at home to Celta de Vigo.

Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano, who both won their opening fixtures, meet in Seville.

Champions League hopefuls Malaga will take on Mallorca at home, while Espanyol play host to Real Zaragoza.

On Sunday, Deportivo de La Coruna travel to Valencia, and Granada will play Sevilla at home.

Real Valladolid will face Levante on Monday, followed by the clash between Europa League champions Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish capital.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone is looking forward to the fixture.

"As always, we expect them (Athletic de Bilbao) to be a very competitive team. I know the coaching staff and they don't have any weaknesses," Simeone said.

"They're strong and they work well. As a result, I hope that we can do our best, as we did last season in both the league and the cup.

"Returning to the Calderon will be a pleasure for the players and for everyone else."

La Liga wrap: Rayo set winning pace

26 August 2012

287767header.jpg

Rayo Vallecano maintained their 100 percent record and moved top of the La Liga table with a 2-1 victory at Real Betis on Saturday.Rayo, who edged Granada in their opening match of the season, made it two wins from two against Betis with goals from Piti and Brazilian Leo Baptistao.

The visitors took the lead two minutes into the encounter after Baptistao's cross was tapped home by Piti but Betis hit straight back through Jorge Molina for his third goal of the season.

However, Baptistao scored the match-winner in the 62nd minute, converting a low shot past Betis goalkeeper Fabricio.

Meanwhile, Portuguese striker Helder Postiga struck an 89th minute winner to hand Real Zaragoza a 2-1 win at 10-man Espanyol.

Espanyol hit the front thanks to Alvaro Vasquez on 43 minutes before Apono levelled proceedings from the spot six minutes into the second half after Juan Albin was given his marching orders.

Postiga, who took part in Portugal's Euro 2012 campaign, secured Zaragoza's first win of the campaign in the final minute of normal time.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Imanol Agirretxe netted a brace as Real Sociedad ran out 2-1 winners at home to Celta Vigo.

Newly-promoted Celta broke the deadlock through Enrique De Lucas four minutes into the second half before Agirretxe scored twice in seven minutes to give Sociedad their first win of the season.

And Juanmi scored a 76th-minute equaliser to earn Malaga a point at home to Mallorca at the Estadio La Rosaleda after Israeli striker Tomer Hemed had put Mallorca ahead nine minutes earlier.

La Liga wrap: Real slump further behind

27 August 2012

287865header.jpg

Real Madrid handed La Liga leaders Barcelona a five-point lead after slumping to a 2-1 loss to Getafe on Sunday.

Gonzalo Higuain's opener was cancelled out by Juan Valera in the 53rd minute, before Abdelaziz Barrada gave Getafe all three points with a quarter of an hour to play.

The result leaves Jose Mourinho's men in 16th place with just one point from their opening two games.

Real took a deserved lead through a well-worked move just before the half-hour as Higuain got on the end of Angel di Maria's pass, rounded goalkeeper Moya and finished from a tight angle.

The hosts, outplayed for much of the opening half, came out of the blocks quickly after the break, levelling in the 53rd minute.

Barrada was the provider as he whipped in a cross from the right flank for Valera, who powered a header past Iker Casillas.

The comeback was complete on 75 minutes when substitute Adrian Colunga slid a pass inside to Barrada, who took a touch before slamming the ball past Casillas.

The final insult on a horrible outing for the capital giants came when Fabio Coentrao received a red card while sitting on the bench, following an exchange of words with the officials.

Barcelona escaped from the Estadio El Sadar with a 2-1 victory over Osasuna.

Tito Vilanova's side were second best for much of the game and fell behind in the 17th minute to a goal from Joseba Llorente.

Vilanova was sent to the stands in the 73rd minute for protesting to the linesman, and his side got a controversial equaliser through Lionel Messi and Osasuna captain Patxi Punal was sent off for protesting the goal.

Punal appeared to be obstructed by the referee in the middle but play was allowed to continue and Alexis Sanchez set up Messi for the equaliser.

The Argentine would pop up once again four minutes later to poke home the winner and give the Catalans a win that they scarcely deserved.

Valencia were held to a 3-3 draw at home to newly promoted Deportivo La Coruna.

A Roberto Soldado brace inside 28 minutes put Valencia 2-0 up, before Abel Aguilar responded for Deportivo.

Sofiane Feghouli restored the home side's two-goal advantage, but an Aguilar strike and a Pizzi penalty secure a draw for the visitors.

To make matters worse for Valencia, Ricardo Costa was sent off after picking up a second yellow card for a challenge on Riki which led to the Deportivo penalty.

Granada and Sevilla played out a 1-1 draw after Alvaro Negredo cancelled out Mikel Rico's opener, while Diego Lopez was sent off on 34 minutes.
