"Tonight on the eve of Malaysia Day, we are ready to form the government tomorrow," he said to loud cheers from the jubilant crowd.

He said that he had the required number of parliamentarians to form the government.

According to him, Pakatan Rakyat has submitted a letter to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today seeking a meeting for a smooth transition of power.

"Tomorrow is the day we are ready to form government. But the best time, I tell you, is when we meet the prime minister.

"A peaceful transition is paramount," he added.

He was talking to the massive crowd which had gathered at the Kelana Jaya stadium in Petaling Jaya to celebrate Pakatan's 'Hari Malaysia' celebration.

Anwar, who began his speech at 10.15pm, emphasised the importance of Sabah and Sarawak to Malaysia.

He also criticised the ruling Barisan Nasional for pursuing a divide-and-rule agenda at the expense of the two east Malaysian states.

"This is the first time ever a celebration of this scale is being held to recognise that we are one - that Sabah and Sarawak are part of Malaysia," Anwar told the crowd.

He added that he would declare Sept 16 a national holiday when he takes over the government.

Anwar also slammed the Abdullah-led government of practising racial politics, which he said led to the ISA arrests of three people.

He urged the majority Malays not to be swayed by BN policies.

"The Ketuanan Melayu (Malay supremacy) benefitted only the rich and elite Malays, not you," he said.

Most of those in the crowd are there in the belief that PKR leader Anwar would make an important announcement tonight on the formation of a new government, which Anwar has repeatedly claimed he would do by tomorrow.

Crowd expectation

Earlier Anwar entered the venue at 9.40pm to wild chants of ‘Reformasi!' and ‘Merdeka'.

Many Pakatan leaders were already at the venue, most of them also believing that Anwar would make an important announcement at the rally.

Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, when asked if there would be a surprise announcement, merely said: "Wait for Anwar".

Guan Eng and DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang had earlier entered the stadium to loud cheers.

Many people on the ground whom Malaysiakini spoke to also expressed confidence of an impending change.

"He may reveal the first batch of defectors and maybe on how they will approach the king.

"I think they will wrap it up and form a new government by the end of this month," said retiree G Maniam.

‘I am surprised at how fast things are changing," said another Pakatan supporter at the stadium, Anthony Tong.

The 52-year-old accountant from Cheras said that he would not be disappointed even if Anwar managed to seize power by the end of this year.

Anwar: We're ready to form new gov't

Sep 15, 08 10:32pm

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim told a 25,000-strong rally tonight that he had the numbers to form a new government tomorrow and wants to meet with Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to discuss a handover.

"Tonight on the eve of Malaysia Day, we are ready to form the government tomorrow," he said to loud cheers from the jubilant crowd.

"We have the numbers to defeat BN," he said. "Tomorrow is D-day, we are ready to form the government."

According to him, Pakatan Rakyat has submitted a letter to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today seeking a meeting for a smooth transition of power.

"Tomorrow, we are ready. But the best time, I tell you, is when we have met the prime minister. A peaceful transition is paramount," he added, indicating that there will be no change of government tomorrow as he had promised earlier.

Reformasi in name. What are Anwwar's economic, health, trade, defence, home affairs policies?

Democracy and reformasi are just names to appeal to

At the rally, Anwar set out an agenda to fight corruption and protect the rights of all citizens in this multicultural country which is dominated by Muslim Malays but also home to ethnic Chinese and Indian communities.

"The Pakatan Rakyat government will uphold justice, a free judiciary, a free media and a professional police force," he said.

do you think that he can deliver, when his majority supporters are Muslim Malays and PAS is also part of it ?
a professional police force, can it be achived ?

he is playing his last card by trying to force Badawi to accept and believe that he has secured the necessary numbers of MPs who will deflect to his side.
i do not think he has it else he will seek for the parliament to be in session and declare it.

Somehow I'm envious of Malaysia having someone like Anwar. We used to have a Tang Liang Hong but where is he now?

We need someone like Anwar who can tough it out here man... JBJ can tough it out, but seems to have some disconnect with the rest of the people.

BN Corrupts May Get Away Via Handover Negotiation

How does corrupted politicians get away from punishment in a defection take over like what is taking place in Malaysia? They will negotiate for their own freedom from prosecution after their handover, that could include allowing them to leave the country as seen in many examples.

Mr. Anwar is now asking for a meeting with Abdullah Badawi. Essentially that is to be a handover negotiation.

When a falling regime reached such a state, they will either get desperate to struggle by abuse of force or they negotiate for their own freedom from prosecution, or freedom to flee / exile.

Malaysian opposition has numbers to topple govt: Anwar

AFP - Tuesday, September 16KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - - Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said Monday he has enough support to topple the government and wants to meet with Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to discuss a handover.
After landmark March elections that saw the opposition dramatically increase its seats in parliament, Anwar set a September 16 deadline to oust the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition by persuading at least 30 lawmakers to defect.
"We have the numbers to defeat BN," the opposition leader told a rally of some 10,000 supporters who erupted in wild cheers. "Tomorrow is D-Day, we are ready to form the government."
"Our representatives have delivered a letter to Abdullah to demand a meeting ... to discuss the future of politics in Malaysia and the handover of power," he said.
"We have the numbers but we want to meet with Abdullah, show him the evidence and work out a handover because we want a peaceful transition".
Anwar, a former deputy premier who was sacked and jailed a decade ago, arrived to rapturous applause at the rally held in a Kuala Lumpur stadium, which echoed to chants of "Reformasi" -- the opposition battle cry of "Reform".
Tian Chua, information chief of his Keadilan party, said the three-member opposition alliance had secured a simple majority in parliament and that more government lawmakers would defect later.
But he said there were concerns that the coalition -- which has ruled since independence from Britain 51 years ago -- would stoke conflict in order to justify a crackdown to keep itself in power.
"We want Abdullah to assure us there will be no repressive force used, like involving the police or inviting the military to take control," he told AFP.
Tian Chua said the opposition's push had been helped by the detention on Saturday of an opposition politician, a prominent blogger and a journalist under draconian internal security laws.
"Abdullah's final crackdown made people lose hope that he is ever going to be a liberal reformer, which he promised," he said.
Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar defended the detentions but said it was a police operation and not his idea -- comments ridiculed by the opposition, which said he and Abdullah must be held accountable.
The Pakatan Rakyat opposition alliance made surprise gains in March general elections, seizing control of five states and a third of parliamentary seats in the biggest challenge ever faced by the coalition.
The political uncertainty has paralysed investment in recent months, and depressed trading on the stock market which dropped 2.5 percent over last week, and another 2.1 percent Monday as Anwar's takeover deadline loomed.
Spirits were high at the stadium, which was adorned with Malaysian flags and posters demanding the release of the opposition politician and the blogger -- who remain in custody while the journalist was freed.
"What Anwar has said will happen soon as all the people are backing him. The change of government will happen very soon now," said Nursikin Bahrom, a 23-year-old student.
"Anwar has promised us a new beginning and we will support him when the battle begins on the 16th... he is our new prime minister and the BN should realise this," said businessman Abdul Aziz Rashid, 36.

What is Abdullah Badawi's respond? He gave a respond of denial: This denial however does not exclude the chance that the BN Regime will later negotiate for their own SAFE exit from power.

PM: Sept 16 a 'political lie'

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi scoffed at the opposition caolition’s claims that it has the numbers to topple the Barisan Nasional government.

He described Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s assertion at a massive rally last night that he had enough government defectors to take power as a “political lie”.

Anwar told the 20,000-strong crowd at the Kelana Jaya stadium that he had sent a letter to the prime minister requesting for a meeting to discuss a smooth power transistion.

When asked whether he would meet the opposition leader, Abdullah was non-committal. “We shall see if there’s time,” he said.

The prime minister dismissed Anwar’s claims as preposterous, arguing that “if Anwar has the numbers, he would have let the whole world know”.

No details on who and how many

Anwar told a rapturous crowd close to midnight yesterday that the Pakatan Rakyat has “the numbers but we want to meet with Abdullah, show him the evidence and work out a handover because we want a peaceful transition".

The opposition leader however did not provide more information on how many MPs Pakatan has in the bag and the number of government defectors.

Anwar will need at least 31 defectors from BN and perhaps over 40 for a stable Pakatan government.

"I believe that the government will fall in the next few weeks," he told journalists after the rally.

But Abdullah stressed that his government continues to be stable and strong.

“I have known Anwar for a long time and he will say certain things to attract people to his ceramah, and they choose to believe him,” he told journalists this morning after a function.

“The BN government is still in power, and we will continue to do our job and not be distracted by such claims.”

The reply from Abdullah Badawi :

"He has no substance but the people will continue to be fascinated by him."

Abdullah, who has faced repeated calls to quit since elections in March which saw the opposition dramatically increase its numbers in parliament, said he did not feel compelled to quit.

"Why should I be pressured? It is mere dreams. If at all it is true, (Anwar) would have announced it by now. The whole world would have known," he said.

"Do you think he would ask for a meeting with me to discuss a transition? He would storm into my room with hundreds behind him, shouting victory. This is Anwar's style."

Hatta Ramli, from the Islamic party PAS which is a member of the opposition alliance, said that if Abdullah refuses a meeting the next step would be to see Malaysia's king, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, to clam a mandate to rule.

"The issue of appointment of the prime minister and change of government is very much the role of the king," he said, adding that the opposition now had the support of as many as 116 parliamentarians.

very interesting to see what will happen ???
just as i mentioned,Anwar may not have the required numbers to form the next government,Anwar and Badawi is playing those politic's chess game, whoever gives in will lose all.

Today, Malaysians celebrate Malaysia Day - the day our country became whole and our people become united. This day has a new meaning. After years of struggle, after fighting against a system that is corrupt and unjust - we affirm that victory is finally at hand. Our vision of rebuilding this country and bringing its people together, as the founding fathers envisioned, is within reach.

d9a87d3a2aab559a6883263fcbe00de3.jpg
The economy is in turmoil with runaway inflation and joblessness creating widespread discontent. Racial tensions have been rising, exacerbated by the propaganda spread in the government owned mainstream media. The administration has offered no vision to steer the nation out of this quagmire and there is manifest erosion in confidence in the current government.

We in Pakatan Rakyat believe we can save Malaysia from economic ruin and the dangerous politics of racism. We will do so prudently, legally and in doing so we will not jeopardise the security and stability of the country and the safety of its people.

We have received firm commitments from members of parliament in excess of the number required to form a new government, and our government will reflect the diverse make-up of Malaysian society.

It has been our concern to ensure a peaceful transition of power. We do not wish to see a repeat of what transpired in the Selangor and Perak state governments, where following the victory of Pakatan Rakyat on March 8, documents were shredded and removed by the outgoing administration.

We furthermore advise radical elements within BN against the abuse of state power to unlawfully harass and detain our supporters. The immediate investigation by the ACA (Anti-Corruption Agency) of Yong Teck Lee after the announcement by SAPP (Sabah Progressive Party) of its intention to move a motion of no-confidence against Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is another example of the tactics we reject.
The use of the ISA, as has happened to MP Teresa Kok, would be an unlawful impediment to the transition process.

In light these serious concerns, yesterday leaders of Pakatan Rakyat sent a letter to the prime minister at 2.30pm requesting a meeting to discuss the future course of the nation's leadership and to seek his assurance on the following important matters:
1) That the BN shall not hinder or prevent their BN MPs from acting in accordance with their conscience, constitutional rights and independent judgment;
2) That the BN government shall not invoke the Internal Security Act to detain any of the MPs who will join Pakatan Rakyat, or any of the present 82 Pakatan Rakyat MPs;
3) That the BN government shall not invoke emergency or police powers, or suspend the constitution, or dissolve parliament in response to our intention to form a new government;
4) That the Barisan Nasional government shall not impose roadblocks and impede the MPs from gaining access to the House of Parliament and the institutions of government.
We believe the prime minister will share Pakatan Rakyat's concerns for the welfare of the people and security of the nation. We are confident he will ensure the BN will act constitutionally and democratically to ensure that the transition will be peaceful, and there will be no actions taken to sabotage the wishes of the people or play on racial tensions in the country.

We appeal to all quarters in Malaysian society to understand our intentions are for the betterment of Malaysian society. The mainstream media, in particular, should accept the reality of these historic times and report fairly, accurately and without bias. The irresponsible tact that is used by the media to obfuscate issues, attack opposition supporters and instigate racial tensions must end immediately.

Following our meeting with the prime minister, we intend to proceed within the framework established by the federal constitution in the formation of a new government, with the assent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"We have a slight majority, it is in excess of 31," he told a packed press conference held at 2pm in the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya.Anwar, however, did not reveal the names of the lawmakers.

His Pakatan Rakyat alliance - made up of the PKR, DAP and PAS - now holds 81 out of the 222 seats in Parliament. Its rival, the Barisan Nasional coalition led by Abdullah's Umno party, currently has the majority.

To overthrow the Barisan, Pakatan would need another 31 members of parliament to join its camp for it to hit the minimum simple majority required of 112 seats.

The 61-year old Anwar, who has been in talks with a number of disgruntled backbenchers, also said he wants Abdullah's assurance the power transition could proceed smoothly.

Peaceful transition

Abdullah had last week shocked the nation by arresting three civilians under the country's draconian Internal Security Act, which allows for police detention without trial.

The move, which sparked widespread condemnation, was seen as a means to shore up his political standing within his Umno party and also as a warning to Anwar's Pakatan.

“We want a peaceful transition. We hope that Barisan (Nasional) will not put up emergency rule to stop MPs from going to Parliament or arrest (government) MPs or stop them from joining Pakatan Rakyat,” he said.

"That's why we have taken a very soft, conciliatory option. I am not making excuses. We have the numbers. We can and are prepared to move. If after a few days there is no response, Pakatan leaders will meet and see what is the next course of action."

The Pakatan had yesterday sent a letter to Abdullah, requesting for a meeting.

"We give the PM time to consult and act responsibly as head of the country to heed the wishes of the people," Anwar said. "I believe he will meet and we will have to wait today or tomorrow. He is a politician under siege, so you can forgive him for sounding desperate."

"We are looking at a matter of days (for a change in government)," he added.

According to Malaysian law, the king has the right to accept and formalise any new government that can show proof of sufficient mandate in Parliament. This means that Anwar can approach the monarch with proof that he has the support of enough MPs to be the new leader.

Alternatively, the king could order fresh general elections, provided the prime minister - either outgoing or incoming - recommends it.

Yipee, if Anwar's Malaysia succeeded in invigorating its economy, we can move to live and work in Malaysia.

I fail to see what this has to do with LKY, PAPs and Singapore. The conditions in Singapore are totally differnet from the conditions across the causeway, and that is the plain reality and fact.

Malaysia is a twin brother of Singapore. BN regime is a brotherly regime of PAP regime. How can you find any way to deny this?:eek:

Time to finish is about the same. Don't dream on avoiding this.:D:rolleyes:

Hindraf backs Anwar for PM

Athi Veerangan | Sep 16, 08 6:21pm
The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) openly backed Anwar Ibrahim to become the country's sixth prime minister for it believes that the opposition leader is the only person capable of putting the country back on the right track.

Firstly, he said Anwar would surely abolish the draconian Internal Security Act, a tough security law which provides detention without trial.

On Dec 13 last year, five Hindraf leaders were arrested under ISA after organising a mammoth street protest in Kuala Lumpur several weeks earlier.

The five are P Uthayakumar, 47, T Vasanthakumar, 35, M Manoharan, 47, R Kenghadharan, 41, and V Ganabatirau, 35.

“Anwar has assured that he will ensure a free and fair country based on equality, justice and democracy for all, something that Barisan Nasional has not given to Malaysians in its unbroken 51-year rule,” said Thanenthiran.

“He is now the best bet to instill some order to our political uncertainty. Hindraf wants him to become prime minister and safeguard the Indian community from marginalisation,” he told a press conference in George Town today.

Thumbs-up for Zaid

A former ISA detainee himself, Anwar has promised to abolish ISA and free all ISA detainees in the Kamunting Detention Camp in Taiping when he comes into power. It is estimated that there are some 80 ISA detainees.

Meanwhile, self-exiled Hindraf chief P Waythamoorthy is currently in London on a temporary political asylum granted by the British government under the Geneva Convention.

He hopes to return home once the threat of an ISA arrest abates if Anwar becomes prime minister.

“We will prepare a grand welcome at the airport if and when Waythamoorthy returns,” said Thanenthiran, adding that it’s time for the people to relish and cherish a chance to finally unseat BN and replace it with a new model of governance.

“Everyone wants good governance without abuse of power, corruption and injustice,” he said.

anwar pc on budget 2009 020908 01Anwar claims to have secured the support of more than 31 government lawmakers, enabling him to form a new administration with a slim majority.

He is now hoping for incumbent premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to allow a discussion on a smooth transition of power.

Thanenthiran also condemned the latest ISA crackdown as being against the rule of law and natural justice.

He also criticised Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar and the police for 'mocking' the country’s laws and justice.

However, he applauded de facto Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim's decision to resign in protest of the ISA arrests, and hoped that Syed Hamid would take a cue from this and also resign from the cabinet for the ISA debacle.
