The Gohs' spacious new house, a 7,000sq-ft bungalow off Mountbatten Road, has been fitted with the kitchen they have always wanted.
Dr Wilson Goh, a dentist, and his wife, Ms Karen Yap, a cellist and principal of music school Tanglewood, moved into their new home about 11/2 months ago. And their kitchen is now ready to take on its first dinner party next weekend. They have two children, nine and 11.
The open kitchen, which faces the dining area, is equipped with a large 90cm oven by high-end German appliance brand Miele. It also has a built-in industrial refrigerator by local refrigeration company Robin Refrigeration, a Miele steamer, a De Dietrich induction stove, display drawers for Ms Yap's china and an air-tight cupboard to dry her gumpaste flowers for her artisan cakes.
Says Ms Yap, 40, who cooks and hosts dinner parties for 10 at her home about once a month: 'I chose the Miele oven because of its size. With cupcakes, for example, I can bake them all at once in an oven this size.'
The 90cm Miele oven, she says, was the largest one she could find, short of installing a commercial restaurant-style oven in her home.
The oven cost $16,230, while the steamer and induction stove set them back another $9,000 or so. The refrigerator cost another $1,800.
In total, they have spent about $27,000 on just appliances.
Ms Yap reckons it is money well spent - quality and something that will last, is important to her.
She says: 'We are blessed that we can afford it.'

Your $500 went to the purchese of the $16,000 oven plus whatever French cooking is there is any...not to mention they feel blessed, how many tooth have you? just multiply that by $500...ha ha ha ha

Even if she did suspect she's a lousy cook

I've got a Die Dietrich Steam oven that no one in the family likes to use :(
They prefer to use the gas or induction range if they want to steam things.

Having an open and commercial kichen is now all the rage in the 1st world countries. Nothing to do with whether you can cook. In many cases the food is catered and warmed up in the kitchen.

I attended a party about 2 years ago overseas and cocktails were serve in the big kitchen with wine bottles, aperitifs and hors d’oeuvurs placed on the big island table in the centre of the kitchen. The guests were admiring the appliances, the layout etc.

The things people do.

In Spore the maid are the ones using all these expensive appliances. Was talking to an agent which was a supplier to the condos & was told that many of these appliances got damaged by ignorant maids

the real cooking handle by the maids is done outside the house in what they call 'wet kitchen'

Not many of us don't have the room for a show piece kitchen

I heard it's quite common for HDB heartlanders to omit the kitchen altogether as people don't know how or don't have the time to cook.

2. whether it is a 16k or 2buck oven, what is most important is that she literally cooks and not rely on maids and others.
