Nominated Member of Parliament Calvin Cheng's passionate opposition against more Non-Constituency MPs - a day after the Constitution was amended to allow more into Parliament - was greeted with some surprise yesterday.

Mr Cheng said the move to allow losing Opposition candidates into Parliament, at best "flies in the face of the logic of democratic elections". "At worst, it's a slap in the face to the people who had voted," he added.

Mr Cheng, a former People's Action Party youth wing member, applauded "the ruling party for allowing their vanquished opponents through the backdoor of Parliament".

While he acknowledged Mr Cheng's point, Law Minister K Shanmugam pointed out that some would say that NMPs, who do not contest elections, should also not enter Parliament.

NCMP Sylvia Lim also quipped: "I find it quite ironic that someone who came into this august chamber through an interview could attack the NCMP scheme in such strong terms."

Mr Shanmugam reiterated that the Government is increasing the number of NCMPs "because we believe strongly in doing what is right for Singapore".

"Singaporeans will know that alternative views are not shut out ... The changes are not being made based on cynical, tactical, short-term calculations - which won't work anyway," he added.

One blur chap and he is talking about logic. An idiot not less. The establishment figure that sponsored him should kill himself.

I hope SL realises that it is equally ironic that for someone who complains about PAP MPs riding on the coattails of PAP Ministers in order to be in Parliament, she is likewise, riding on the coattails of the PAP sponsored NCMP scheme to be in Parliament.

thought Mr Cheng speak excellently on this issue, I absolutely agree with everything he say. He ought to demand Sylvia resignation from parliament immediately and he should resign as NMP too since he has no legitimately as well.

This just shows the standards of the NMP, and the NMP scheme designed by the PAP is absolute rubbish. Should not the PAP be embaressed by such quality NMPs??

The Resident Rasputin & his smart arse logic again....

Whatever our views of the merits/demerits of NMP/NCMPs, under current law, both are legitimate.

Yet to any man in the street applying common sense, there is a world of difference between being in Parliament through an interview & being in Parliament on the back of tens of thousands of votes from Aljunied GRC voters.

But Mr Googler has no grasp of common common sense. sigh...
Gonna display your talent for petty insults again chauvenist snob ?

Consider these facts, even if you rank all 3 equally in legitimacy:

- among NCMPs, walkover PAP MPs and NMPs, NCMPs pump in the most resources - in fact much more - including hefty financial resources, time and energy resource, to get an NCMP seat

- NCMPs are the only ones that have an electoral opponent

- NCMPs are defeated by one PAP opponent, but defeat several opposition "opponents" to get the NCMP seat

- NCMPs are elected positions, as stated in the Gazette

Don't be daft. This again, is what I stated:

Which part of it are you taking objection to? The fact that it is true?

Only if I have the time and am in the mood to humour inconsequential bootlickers like yourself.

BTW, have you licked and fondled scroobal's testicles today? The recent one where you likened his presence as being as rare as Lee Kuan Yew's appearance in Parliament ( ) was quite impressive even for a bootlicker like yourself. It made me cringe and all my hair stand on end when I read it.

Even funnier is where PAP MPs "oppose" the many bills put up by the gahmen, but later vote for them???

Who are they trying to fool?

Bloody moron, and this is coming from a chap who himself entered Parleement through the back door.

Calvin Cheng represents the high of ridicularity, and is a symptom that the establishment cannot even find the kind of people they like to fill the NMP ranks, much less the PAP ranks.

This does not mean there are no good folks out there, of course. It means all those good folks have either rejected the NMP position, seeing it for the farcicial smear on democracy that it is, or the establishment rejected those people. SKH for instance.

Calvin Cheng just want to make noise and create excitement to justify his allowances. The reason why PAP put him there is for buzz purposes and nothing more. So don't expect anything sensible coming out of him unless you are desperate to throw out any undigested food still stuck inside the stomach. Nontheless, other ministers like Josephine Yeo, Irene and the rest under walk-over have also displayed similar traits and are good antidote for people suffering indigestion who want to throw out without needing any medication.

He said that "it's a slap in the face to the people who voted".
But at least the NCMP would have got about 40+ % of the votes in his or her constituency.
How many votes did the NMP get?
None. Oh, wait a minute, he didn't even take part.
What's that then? A punch in the face to the people who did not vote for him?
Pity he doesn't understand irony.

Actually, it was not Sylvia Lim who shot Calvin Cheng down. It was K. Shanmugam who shot him down. Sylvia just commented on the irony of the whole idiocy.

This is your obsequious, bootlicking reply to scroobal in the "Confrontational Politics, Chee, Chiam, Low & the PAP" thread.

your postings are becoming as rare as Old man's speaking up in Parliament .....

Now which "simple English" part of your own post do you claim I "can never understand"?

Gotcha!

You are right. Shanmugam remarks were cutting. Reminds me of Tan Cheng Bock who vehemently opposed NMP.

Gotcha? Got jit kee lan lah, lan cheow bin !

Is that all you know? nursing pet hurts & digging up old innocent statements to prop up your childish insults .....

for a pompous arse, there's no end to your juvenile recap of 'runner insults', 'nobel prize insults' & 'bootlicker insults' !

The usual retreat when one question your flawed logic of comparing difference between 'interview' & 'tens of thousands of votes', you densely avoided your shortcoming & pull out some other inconsequential red-herring .... you have selective comprehension problems plus- you are simply a SORE LOSER !

Shanmugam sounded like a rebuttal. Sylvia sounded like sarcasm. If anything sound like "shot", it would be more Sylvia, to me.
