Your Say: War in Ukraine should make Singaporeans reflect on how prepared we are to defend our nation

I refer to the commentary by Carl Skadian (“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a timely reminder of hard truths for Singapore”, Feb 24) and Education Minister Chan Chun Sing’s Facebook post on the situation in Ukraine.

I know many of my friends and neighbours do not care about what is happening right now because Ukraine is such a distant place.
Most Singaporeans are pragmatic and are more worried now about the rising costs of food, impending increase in Goods and Service Tax and overall inflation in our own backyard.
As a Singaporean, I am deeply concerned about what is happening in Ukraine. I believe all Singaporeans should be concerned too.
Mr Chan reminded Singaporeans that events in Ukraine are a “stark reminder” to never take our independence for granted. What has happened to Ukraine can also happen to Singapore.

Commentary: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a timely reminder of hard truths for Singapore

“Unless we are relevant, and possess the means and will to defend ourselves, we will be held ransom by the geostrategic contests of others,” he wrote.
Singapore is a very small country with no natural resources. There are much bigger countries which may not embrace the same pragmatism, beliefs, and values as us.
If Singapore is attacked by a larger country, how many Singaporeans and permanent residents (PRs) will stay back to defend our country, just like the many Ukrainians who are now fighting hard to defend their country from a foreign aggressor?
How many Singaporeans are prepared to take up arms and fight at the frontline? Will Singaporeans be willing to give up their lives to defend Singapore’s sovereignty and independence?
Will wives be willing to say goodbye to their husbands who are going to the frontline as soldiers? Have we as Singaporeans asked ourselves what we are prepared to do if Singapore is attacked?
Given what is happening in Ukraine, this is a good time for us to seriously ask ourselves these questions.

Explainer: Why is Russia invading Ukraine and what does the conflict mean for Singapore?

I am not sure what Singaporeans or Singapore PRs will do.
I know that if Singapore is being attacked by another country today, I will not be packing my bags and running away.
I am prepared to do what is necessary to defend my country from a foreign aggressor. Why? Because Singapore is my country and my home.

As long as Singapore keeps voting for the PAP they will be safe, secure and happy.

If they hand power to opposition parties Singapore will be invaded in no time at all.

In real fact, if there's a choice, I estimate 60% of male Sinkies would abscond themselves if there is a war. It can't be helped especially with the present strawberry generation that cannot take any hardship, made even worse by the relaxed training during their 2 years of National Service, where the emphasis is more on electronic warfare than real combat war. Let's face the real fact.

In real war, people should protect their own family, who the fuck cares about this country and all the other irrelevant people?

If no family to protect, they should first find some Jo Teo or Amy Khor and deliver them 2 bullets into their pussy.

Silly girl, Putin is the liberator of Ukraine, which has been hijacked by nefarious people since the 1990s and kept dirt poor despite its huge potential.

It's too easy and too obvious to demonize Putin as the 'aggressor' or some one-dimensional cartoon villain.

Singapore needs to be liberated too, first thing to do is find Lanjiao Loong and end him when war comes.

Only boomers like you and I would stay behind, aye?
Staying behind is also of not much use because we'll surely die or end up as POWs. Sinkie Land is so small, coupled with today's advanced precision missile technologies and the densely high-rise buildings, the war will be over with a complete walkover in 2 days. Sigh......

Seriously, if the war is with the neighboring countries (Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand), probably there's still a chance of victory since our air-force is much better equipped. But if it's against China, then I think it's futile, and the allied forces won't even be bothered with you either.

It is the choice that majority of the Ukraine have chosen.
Russia did not surprise attack, they gave enough warning
Since Ukraine decide to join NATO & provoke Russia limits
Now they have to bear the consequences of their decision
Surely Ukrainian have thought about their decision carefully
We can only wish them all the best, sacrifices for whatever their belief is.

The only lesson we can learn from this incident ... we are just "bird-shit" compared to the rest of the World
SG should never interfere in other country politics, never give comment, never take sides ... We are Friends of the World.

Its a malay island with a indian name and populated with chinese immigrants.

tis just show how cunningness of the british. used the wealth robbed from the world to buy the island from the greedy brainless land owner.
objective accomplished. the british was close to separate malacca from malay but only managed to remove the ruler.
