The first time it happenned, I felt the same. Ramseth in fact hinted the authorities are involved and he together with Forvendent started their own little delphi forum. We all finally came back.
I've never hinted that authorities were involved. Forvendet was new then and thought this forum had closed, so he started one at Delphi. But it was only temporary shutdown at Sammyboy for upgrading. A few of us chatted there whilst Sammyboy was down, but better nothing. Even Equalisation was there, but we all reported back after Sammyboy was back up and running smoothly again. Forvendet left his little forum there for a while as backup. I think he closed it long ago.

I was not aware you chaps went back to delphi, maybe I missed the link or simply did not bother to click on it. I'm sure GMS did not tell you to seize the opportunity to create a forum in which you would very conveniently be overlords just in case Sammy really does not come online again, as GMS is a very upright, no hidden agenda, and simple minded man who would not think so far, and definitely would not urge you (or Forvendet, or watever) to do such a thing.

Yes it was both of them. When the website came back on, they quietly came back as though nothing happened.
If you know anyone in Singnet, tell them to please change their TTL for A records to 2 hours. It looks like it's currently 48 hours which is ridiculous for a major ISP.

I don't the screw actually has any power to actually garner a change. This isn't an issue about face to keep up with other nations' internet capabilities or about actual change for things to run more efficiently in sg. It's all about who actually gets inconvinenced by the rules. Like when the dragon's spawn found military service too long they simply changed the rules that all males now had to serve 2 yrs and not that those with higher education qualifications had to server longer or how they somehow changed the rules for mother tongue cos the spawn couldn't cope if i can recall correctly. If the screw can actually get singet to change their TTL records he isn't simply an ordinary sinkie.
If I wanted to be a forum overlord, I'd have been one long ago with the YPforum diaspora of dissidents, WP supporters and other friends. But no thanks, my interest is to be a poster only. If the Sammyboy forum really couldn't be restored then, I have plenty of other forums to go to in Singapore, Thailand, USA etc.

The policy makers know jack shit about TTL settings. All it takes is a txt message to someone who does server admin. It could be changed in 15 minutes time if the right technician is contacted and the rest of the ruling elite would be none the wiser.
Besides it doesn't look as if 48 hours is official policy as the connection time outs seem to only affect certain networks. It would appear that a parameter was simply left at a default setting during installation and nobody ever noticed the issue.
I'm not familiar with the intricacies of how Singnet configures it's various networks... 3G, WiFi etc but I'm pretty sure changing the TTL is a 5 minute job by a tech. It does not require a cabinet meeting.
did you invoke and set your negative caching ttl to the same 720 secs when you executed your domain migration? many isps retain their default ttl settings at 86400 secs which is 1 day. with domain migration, obviously the smaller number will help. the default negative caching ttl is also typically set at 1 day, similar to the default ttl. 2 days is unheard of until now that you pointed out. i have 2 providers here. one ttl is set at 600 (cable), the other at 86400 (mobile).
i don't think he has any clout left now that he's no longer bossing around in singtel. :p
The TTL settings on the DNS servers that I use are set to one hour.
Whenever I do any updates, I monitor the propagation throughout the civilized world using http://www.whatsmydns.net/#A/www.sammyboy.com
It's not precise but it gives me a good indication of how quickly the changes are spreading through the network. OZ is usually the last to update.. about 3 hours.
thank you. you've been very forthcoming with your mop. now i need to tell my mobile operator to set their ttl optimally. it was left at default when they implemented their new dns network recently. there's something productive and helpful about this thread.
