Taipei, Aug. 22 (CNA) Asustek Computer Inc. (華碩), a Taiwan-based PC vendor, said Saturday that it sold 12,000 units of its second generation ZenFone smartphone series in Brazil in just 20 hours after it was released there Thursday.

The new ZenFone series has attracted lots of attention from Brazilian consumers and has been warmly welcomed in the South American country, said Asustek which has been concentrating on the smartphone market in a bid to offset the effects of slowing PC sales worldwide.

At a product launch at the iconic Ibirapuera Auditorium in Sao Paulo Thursday, the company released its ZenFone 2, ZenFone 2 Laser, ZenFone Selfie and ZenFone 2 Deluxe, and ZenFone 2 Deluxe Special Edition.

These new products "offer Latin American consumers empowering luxury with perfectly-balanced beauty, functionality and performance, together with a premium user experience that can be tailored to the individual needs of mobile users," Asustek CEO Jerry Shen (沈振來) said at the launch.

The product launch was billed by Asustek as "Incredible Comes to Latin America," and the ZenFone series was endorsed by Marcos Pontes, Brazil's first astronaut.

Asustek introduced its first generation ZenFone models in Brazil last October, recording sales of more than 10,000 units on the first day. Over the past 10 months, Asustek has sold 800,000 units of its ZenFone in Brazil and the total is expected to exceed 1 million for the whole year, according to Shen. Currently, the company holds a 2-3 percent share of the Brazil market, ranking as the 7th or 8th largest smartphone vendor there, he said.

With the introduction of the new ZenFone series, Asustek's smartphone shipments to Brazil are expected to reach 2 million to 3 million by 2016, giving the company a 5 percent share and a ranking as the country's fifth largest smartphone supplier, Shen said.
