Zambian woman with syabu held
GEORGE TOWN: A Zambian woman who allegedly tried to smuggle syabu worth RM500,000 into the country was arrested at the Penang International Airport.
The hairstylist, in her 30s, arrived in Penang at 7.30pm on Wednesday. She was stopped at the Customs area, after clearing the luggage and security check, following a public tip-off.
State Customs and Excise Department director Datuk Matrang Suhaili said his officers seized US$1,500 (RM3,225) in foreign currencies, a plastic bag, a handbag and a red leather bag which contained two secret compartments.
“There was one packet of syabu or ICE in crystal forms weighing 1kg in each compartment. The syabu is worth RM500,000 on the black market,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the death penalty. The woman had been remanded for 10 days.
On a separate matter, Matrang added RM3.6mil worth of drugs, including the latest case, had been seized so far this year compared to nine cases of drugs worth RM4.7mil last year.
