THE youth wing of the People's Action Party (PAP) saw a surge in new members last year, with more than 1,000 joining its ranks.
Called the Young PAP (YP), it attributes the increase to a new approach as well as the efforts of its 84 branches.
The new strategy mainly involves shedding its image as a youth extension of the PAP and representing itself more as an organisation for community service, said Mr S Shaikh Ismail, chairman of YP network, which is in charge of membership.
'A lot of youths came in wanting to make a difference, not just sit down and receive information about policies, which was what YP used to do,' he said.
So, the YP changed its tack, making clear it was no longer just a supporting arm of the main party, 'but more of a way to participate as active citizens,' he added.
Mr Ismail, however, declined to disclose the precise number of newcomers, saying only that the increase in previous years was about 600 to 700 annually.

How many new members are new citizens?

read this sentence..."So, the YP changed its tack, making clear it was no longer just a supporting arm of the main party, 'but more of a way to participate as active citizens,' he added.

Are they saying that, the bitch gave birth to puppies, and they called it KITTENS?:D

It would be interesting to see whether one day this party will have more foreign born than local born members.
Once we cross that point, the foreigners would have truly overtaken Singapore.
Are we going to just sit there and wait for it to happen?
I will only vote for a candidate that is born in Singapore.
In fact we should press for a law stating that male Singaporeans can run for political office ONLY after they have served National Service and a minimum number of years of reservist.

And to add to the above, it is the quality not the quantity that matters.

Suddenly the clerk discover a stack of backlogs of membership renewal and application, faster update before CNY. That is how a cock up is covered up being reported as a "sudden surge" good news!

So more members joined to become social members only lah, like golf clubs - not as golfers but for social activities only lah.

Suge in new (curious) members because everyone want to see the Eric How fiasco and the infamous your forefather Karma. Shit Times must be proud to even talk about it.

You mean the cannie gave birth to felines?..wow!..that is the surge in membership? :D

This guy is one example of why having a surge in membership is no big deal...

Well there are also alot of gratitudes being posted to show their support for the PAP Government of how great and effective they are in helping Singapore to overcome this crisis yet again and again years after years. 3 cheers :)

There is no government in this world that can win all the support from the people. There is no policy in this world that can suit everyone. There is nothing that will suit and make all people liking and preference. Take fast food for example, some people prefer McDonald's, some prefer Burger King, some prefer KFC and etc... Take insurance and investment company for example, some people prefer AIG, some Prudential, some Great Eastern and etc...
There is no one size fits all kind of thing that will gain all people's liking and suitability. What is most important is that the great PAP has won the majority support from the people of Singapore and that is why Singapore prosper and progress so fast. You people has made the right choice, 3 cheers :)

Big fat hairy deal. Must be desperate to shore up support. Usually it starts with an invitation to come see how it is like at the branch. Then after that ask you to help out. After a while when they think you are okay they offer you to join up.

People join up for the following reasons:
1) curious.
2) mistaken notion that they can get something out of it.
3) people who geniuely care to help others.

No prizes for guessing which lot makes up the majority.

PS: Some branches don't even bother to put you on probation. So long as you have the paper qualifications and professional skills membership is pretty much guaranteed and may even be offered immediately.

I wonder how many of them joined because they think it will improve the material aspect of their lives.

don't know why,

'sudden surge' in new members remind me of ....

late 2008 & earlly 2009, sudden surge of new members joining AWARE ....

remember ?

so remarkabe,
so stealthy,

all leading to the discovery of secret email campaign of Feminist Mentor....

deja vu !

Wow, do you mean that it is possible that there is a feminist mentor who is planning on a takeover of the young PAP to lead it into enlightened feminism??? Will they denounce Teo Ser Luck for his sexist remarks and stage a coup???

Sounds exciting

Great news! May the YPAP recruit more talents like Bernard Leong and Eric How
