Whether a society is egalitarian or otherwise, there will be segements of the society that will bear grudge and unhappiness. The key point is that there is enough for the poor people to get by minimally. If a person chooses to give up and is bent on doing so, no second chance or encouragement will be enough. I guess monikers at this forum are well off enough not to worry about the immediate bread and butter issues, given the logged time on this forum daily 24/7 365 days a year.

There are many things the Govt can, and should do to further assist the lower income groups which are the hardest hit by job losses, inflation and a slowing economy:

• remove GST on essential items
• lower GST to 5% in light of the huge budget surplus
• increase public assistance to $500 per month
• get PTC to stop approving increases in public tpt fares in light of the record profits that tpt coys are making despite the high oil prices
• ditto for public utilities: Sing power made a record profit of over $1b last year in spite of high natural gas prices
