The economists among you would have read about the marginal propensity to consume or the marginal propensity to save.
Perpetuity could mean many aspects, perpetuity of your status or situation, of your marriage, of your family, of your job, of your health, of your wealth, even of your life.
The question is your level of desire for the thing in question to be perpetual, or how much you fear that it will not be.
Having a low propensity makes you have less fear and less desire, more courage to do what is right, if you have the right values of course. And not so eager to have more or perpetual wealth, power, sex or even life.
Some of those rich people who live in landed property, own luxury cars, own businesses, found out that with the coming of floods, there goes the perpetuity of their comfort status. You couldn't really blame them for being happy with the situation previously, but you would wonder whether this would continue.
As for the poor and needy who are contented, well, they can continue being ignorant. Some would even say stupid, although I won't for now.
