SINGAPORE: Singapore's Defence Ministry said radio-activity readings taken during a port call in 2006 by a US submarine were normal and within safety limits.

Mindef was informed on Thursday by the US Navy that the nuclear-powered USS Houston had been leaking trace amounts of radio-active water since June 2006.

In a statement, Mindef said the readings registered by the Integrated Environment Monitoring System (IEMS) at the Changi Naval Base were within the limits set by Singapore's National Environment Agency.

The NEA's Centre for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Science jointly monitors radioactivity levels at Changi Naval Base with the Republic of Singapore Navy.

The IEMS, which has been in place at the base since 2003, is a continuous real-time radio-activity monitoring system that monitors radio-activity in both the air and water. - CNA
