SINGAPORE: Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will be making an official visit to Singapore on December 8 at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said the visit is part of the Thai Prime Minister's introductory tour of ASEAN countries since she assumed office in August this year.

MFA said the visit underscores the good bilateral relations between Singapore and Thailand and reaffirms the friendship between the two countries.

Following the official Welcome Ceremony at the Istana, Ms Yingluck will separately call on President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Prime Minister Lee.

Prime Minister Lee will also host an official dinner for Ms Yingluck.

During the visit, she will also visit the Singapore Botanic Gardens where an orchid will be named in her honour.

SINGAPORE : Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said Singapore and Thailand should strengthen regional cooperation within ASEAN.

He was speaking at a state dinner on Thursday evening in honour of visiting Thai Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra.

This is Ms Yingluck's first visit to Singapore since assuming office in August.

An earlier date had to be postponed due to the flood crisis back home.

In his speech, PM Lee offered his condolences and said he was confident the Thais will emerge stronger from the tragedy.

He also noted Singapore's assistance and said relations will continue to be fruitful.

Mr Lee said: "Singapore looks forward to deepening our political, economic and cultural ties with Thailand. We should also strengthen our regional cooperation within ASEAN, and work towards our common goal of an ASEAN Community by 2015 and a peaceful, prosperous and more integrated Southeast Asia."

PM Yingluck said: "We should also look to the future and see how our relationship could be further strengthened as we become part of an ASEAN community."

Ms Yingluck's visit continues the frequent interactions that began in 1871, with the visit of King Chulalongkorn.

Bilateral ties have since grown in strength.

Thailand is one of Singapore's top 10 trading partners, and is one of the most important among Southeast Asian countries. Bilateral trade volumes last year stood at over S$31 billion, up from S$26.5 billion in 2009. And one purpose of Ms Yingluck's visit is to discuss ways to improve the economic relationship.

Both leaders also affirmed the importance of institutional links, such as exchanges between the civil service.

Ms Yingluck later met President Tony Tan Keng Yam.

It is a quick trip for Ms Yingluck, who flew in in the afternoon, and returns to Bangkok in the evening.

Her first stop was the National Orchid Garden, where she was presented with her namesake - the Ascocenda Yingluck Shinawatra.

The hybrid orchid sports shades of pink, red and purple - a unique bloom fit for Thailand's first woman Prime Minister.
