Ulu Pandan Heritage Trail (6) – The famous Kota Tinggi-2SIR Incident: Part 1 (by Peter Chan)
It was at our 3SIR Basic Military Training “Rifle Handover” ceremony in 1972 when we first heard about the Kota Tinggi incident. As usual, most fresh “civilian-turned military” conscripts were wondering what so big deal about this ceremony and all about the “AR15”.

The guest-of-honour was Ltc. Dalgit Singh, CO of this Bedok Camp 1 unit. Of course the Hokkien Pengs joked about “Bai-singhs” and making remarks such as "BIG, STRONG & FRIENDLY", probably adopted from a recent Chartered Bank TV advertisement. There were lots of giggles on the parade square. Even the presence of WO1 “Tiger Ong” made no difference. Later that same evening OC Delta Company, a Lta Lau had all of us at the Company Line for “OC Talk” and after that a punitive lesson called “Change Parade”.

1. Dalgit Singh was a young lieutenant with 2SIR credited for single-handedly killing 6 or 7 Indonesians at Kota Tingi in 1965. Most military pilots would score a "kill" by painting a symbol on the aircraft; however this man was very different. He was always quiet and very stern-looking. From that day, “everybody took cover”.

You know how I tell a real Vietnam War veteran, one who had been involved in real combat as oppposed to one who was a REMF (rear echelon motherfucker )? when I talk to an American?
The real Vet will always answer, " I don't want to talk about. " in a polite but pained tone!

No big deal, my friend told me his story about operation desert, and what his commander did to the dead iraqi soldier. I listen in disbelief. How can some one so sadistic be allowed to set foot in civilian life.

Most veterans would not want to talk about their past, those who talk are those mentally unstable from the effects of war.

Actually there are quite a few retired US career soldiers employed as IT project managers for corporations.

I had the chance to work with a retired brigade sgt-major who told me many interesting stories - from 'Nam to Desert Storm. He says the worst battles he's been in were Vietnam and Somalia (Black Hawk Down).

What you said is quite true. My ex-colleague's a heavy drinker. He says many of his compatriots died after retirement because they couldn't adjust to civie life.

Oh believe me.... Most of the project team's bovine excrement came from the ABN consultants

Did that retired sergeant major tell you precisely what role he played during the Black Hawk Down battle? The real battle, not the movie!:p

I have had the honor to meet up with some desert storm 1991 soldiers. He is just not in his right mind. Always nervous looking, and ready to jump at any sight of danger. Easily agitated. Talk vurgar and cant get to adapt to civilian life.

No wonder USA is such a dangerous place to live. all these people own guns, always insecure.

By the way, you know why fags and alcohol is so cheap in army? Becos they want you to drink as much and smoke as much as posible, so when you retire, you die a early death, collect less benefits and less trouble for the civilians.

Glad I got out of Army when I realise that. It is not too late for me yet

He didn't say more than the fact that the crazy Somalis were firing their machine guns through women and children on the street to try to hit US soldiers

Well if you don't have to believe what I'm writing about things he said cos the book was more interesting :P

Nah, not so much the doubt as the hope there could be the confirmation that when the rangers fired armour piercing rounds at the Somalis, it went right thru them and they still ran despite being hit with multiple rounds. That was one of the snippets I remembered well from the book!
