SINGAPORE: A South Korean burglar, who stole more than S$97,000 worth of cash and valuables from his victims in Singapore, was jailed four-and-a-half years and six weeks on Monday.
Thirty-six-year-old Choi Hee Soo will also receive three strokes of the cane after striking at different locations around Singapore.
Choi, who pleaded guilty to nine of the 44 charges against him, admitted that he had broken into offices at places such as Orchard Road, Ubi Avenue 3 and Alexandra Terrace near Pasir Panjang Road.
The plump, bespectacled man committed most of the offences late last year and his loot included gold-plated tableware as well as figurines worth some S$30,000 in all.
Besides housebreaking, Assistant Public Prosecutor Puvaneswari Sandirasekaran told the court that Choi had also used a false passport when he entered Singapore via Tuas Checkpoint on October 20, 2010.
A check with the South Korean authorities revealed that the information on the bogus passport did not match the correct personal data recorded in their system, said APP Puvaneswari.
Defence counsel, Richard Tan, said that his client obtained it through an online website in Thailand.
Mr Tan also highlighted that Choi has not returned to his own country for many years.
With his savings of about S$20,000, Choi decided to try his luck at the integrated resorts but lost all the money at the gaming tables.
He had wanted to use his winnings to relocate his wife and two daughters to Malaysia, said Mr Tan.
