Soon Lee foreign workers dormitory</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD><TD class=update> </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD><TD></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
SINGAPORE: The National Environment Agency (NEA) will not make it mandatory for foreign worker dormitories to abide by the "Singapore's OK" hygiene criteria.
However, dormitory operators are expected to maintain a "reasonable hygiene and sanitary standard, by adopting measures appropriate to their individual circumstances".
Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, the Environment and Water Resources Minister said this in a written response to MP (Aljunied GRC) Yeo Guat Kwang.
Dr Yaacob said that the "Singapore's OK" programme is a voluntary scheme targeted at the operators of different premises, including foreign worker dormitories.
Criteria comprise best practices such as a regular cleaning programme and internal inspections.
He said that NEA will keep the scheme voluntary to avoid being "overly prescriptive", but its officers will carry out checks to ensure that basic sanitation standards are maintained, and penalties will be meted out for lapses.
Dr Yaacob noted that the NEA already publishes a set of guidelines for dormitories and hotels, which are more detailed than the criteria laid out under the "Singapore's OK" scheme.
