Band of Brothers - 609 SIR

After my NS battalion 609 Singapore Infantry Regiment (SIR) Stand-Down Parade this morning, I received a Certificate of Appreciation (for National Service contributions), a National Service medal (alongside a collar pin version) and a SAF Hamilton watch.

Together with the majority of my fellow soldiers from 609 SIR and formerly from 2 SIR (during our active days), we have finally completely our NS training cycle and will be phased to MINDEF Reserve (MR). Having discharged our national services duties wholeheartedly over the last 10-odd years, it was naturally a highly emotive moment of pride and sadness for many in the battalion.

Pride in the sense that, despite the obvious ‘siong-ness’ (toughness) of an infantry regiment, the men of 609 SIR ‘never say die’ (never give up) and we fought the good fight. Collectively, 609 SIR secured a RECON 2A status during our 2006 ATEC assessment and we won the best (NS) infantry unit title consecutively for both 05/06 and 06/07. These are no mean feats!

Sadness in the sense that, this ‘band of brothers’ combination could never be replicated any more. Specifically, in direct reference to the men of Alpha Company and all combat medics of 609 SIR. A good decade-odd of camaraderie and friendship! Our special bonding can never be fully described with mere words …

The gallant men of 609 SIR were once the finest soldiers of Singapore Armed Forces and deep in our hearts, we will always be. Band-of-brothers of 609 SIR – BOXER! YEAH! (x3)

(Believing he can continue to serve his country, the author has volunteered for a re-deployment (recycle) instead of phasing into MR. His CO (Commanding Officer) has verbally approved his request.)

Band of Brothers in History and Literature
A fairly thorough search of classical literature archives reveals that the first use of the term, "Band of Brothers" was by perhaps the greatest of English playwrights, William Shakespeare, in his famous history play, Henry V. The lines of the speech (The speech was invented by Shakespeare for the play.) still stir the hearts of men:

And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother;
be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap while any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

To get the full effect read the entire speech. Yet we understand here that this "band of brothers" is a martial group, dedicated and loyal. The spilling of their blood, mixed together in desperate battle, makes them a family as close as any blood tie can make them. In their desperation, their comradeship, their shared struggle they become a "band of brothers". The concept surely is as old as man himself. In some pre-Columbian cultures in America "blood brothers" were not brothers by blood in the family sense, but as in Henry V, a fighting sense. The idea has even influenced men at sea. Nelson, after the Battle of Trafalgar referred to his sea captains as a band of brothers. Nelson meant, not only their comradeship, but their elite qualities of seamanship. They were brothers in war and brothers in skill. The wooden ships that sailed the high seas in the early 1800's were driven by men of talent and technical ability. They had to be to survive the tough conditions on the oceans.

" In the summer of 1942, young men in Army training at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, are given an opportunity to be part of a unique unit of paratroopers. This unit offers $50 dollars a month extra for hazardous duty pay, which draws a lot of the volunteers. These men begin a very rigorous training regimen under Captain Sobel, whom most of the men come to hate. Their training includes basic infantry skills - use and maintenance of various weapons, map reading, communications. They also practice jumping with parachutes, beginning with towers of varying heights, then to the actual jump from an airplane. The hardest part of their training is a run they must make, up to the top of Mount Currahee, which is an Indian name that means We Stand Alone Together.
After several long months of this training, the men of Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, are shipped to Uppottery, England, where they continue their training. They are being prepared for the greatest military maneuver ever undertaken; the D-Day invasion of Normandy. The 506 is to parachute behind the German lines and work their way back towards the beach, to meet the Allies there, and hopefully cut off German supply lines to the front in the process. On June 6, 1944, the invasion comes, after having been postponed for bad weather. The drops do not go well, due to anti-aircraft fire and low visibilty, but as the men hit the ground, they begin to regroup, and eventually, the beaches are secured, and the company is under the leadership of Lt. Dick Winters. Now it is time to beat the Germans back to Berlin.
Easy Company does not get much rest after D-Day. They are sent into Holland, as part of Operation Market-Garden. In an effort to get to Berlin, they are then sent to Bastogne, and are tasked to hold the front line in the dead of winter, with no food, no winter clothing, and little ammo. This becomes known as the Battle of the Bulge. After many casualties, they are finally relived, and then continue the push towards Germany. They finally fight their way in to Germany, where they come upon a concentration camp, one of many that are found as the Allies push into what was German territory. The company gets tasked to take Hitler's Eagle's Nest and the town of Berchtesgaden, the last stronghold of the SS, and as the German Army surrenders, many of the men begin preparing to ship out to the war in the Pacific. Finally, Japan, too, surrenders, and the war is over.
Easy Company had one of the highest casualty rates of all the Allied units. There were many battlefield commissions, including making Dick Winters a Major, and battallion leader. Their unit was disbanded after the war, in honor of their accomplishments. For the ones that made it back, we get a brief glimpse of thier lives back at home, how they took their experiences and lived their lives after being a part of one of the greatest forces in all of military history. This is an intimate look at how these men came together and made it through the worst the Germans had, how they became a Band of Brothers.

YSL is a Classic!!!!!!!!

I just got MR last yr recently .........but anyway ........ after 10 yrs being together .....and also 2 yrs of NSF with my platoon mates. We just felt a little emotional, but most of them choose to hide it.

It the memory of being "XIONG" together that build the bond. It the Singapore experience. NO where u can find in the World. The bond really transpire religion and race.

But anyway , NS Sucks BIG TIME. Like what other have said with regard to a store man who is unconscious. When they need to use you , they heck care if you are off duty, but when trouble comes and you are in hospital , incurring a lot of medical cost to clear. They said you are OFF DUTY when the accident happen and MINDEF shd not be responsible for your medical bill !!!!!!!!

NS sucks , but the fundemental the idea is great and Noble ......but the people running it SUCKS BIG TIME. It become more glaring when they want to wash their hands off you....!
