GENERAL SANTOS, Philippines, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- An earthquake registering 6.2 on the Richter scale shook the southern Philippines Christmas Day, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There were no early reports of damage or injuries, and no indication of any high waves, or tsunamis, as a result of the temblor.

The 11:20 a.m. quake was reported to be centered about 35 miles southeast of General Santos and about 680 miles south-southeast of Manila. It was detected at a depth of about 139 miles, the USGS said.

"That was enough to cause panic in some people," Jane Punongbayan of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology told CNN. "Some people in the mall ran out of the mall, but according to initial reports it was not strong enough to cause damage."

14:01, December 25, 2008

A Magnitude 6.2 earthquake jolted the southern Philippine region of Mindanao on Thursday, with no casualty or damage to property reported yet.

The quake was recorded at 11:20 a.m. local time (0320 GMT), and the epicenter was 55 kilometers southeast of the General Santos city, or 1095 kilometers south-southeast of Manila at a depth of 207.5 kilometers, the United States Geological Service (USGS) said in a report posted on its website.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported the quake as Magnitude 5, in an area 85 kilometers south of General Santos.

Renato Solidum, chief of the local quake agency, said he was not expecting significant damage although there could be possible aftershocks.

Earlier, USGS reported another quake in Mindanao. The 4.9-magnitude quake was recorded at 07:56 a.m. local time (2356 GMT), with the epicenter 900 kilometers southwest of Manila at a depth of 96.5 kilometers.

The Philippines is hit regularly by earthquakes, although most are low in magnitude and cause little damage.

The Southeast Asian country is part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a string of islands on the Pacific Ocean rim that were formed by the eruptions of undersea volcanoes.
