A Viet dude who spoke halting English with a heavy Vietnamese accent was the coordinator! I struggled to make out his words and struggled to make him understand mine. The appointment was almost messed up as a result. Is he the best person to be coordinating? Is an FT better than a local here?
When I went for the briefings and interviews I found that the faculty were mostly Indian or Chinese nationals. So were the applicants. I was shocked looking around to see that Singaporeans were completely outnumbered. I felt like I'm either in India or China. My interviewer-a Chinese national-also had some difficulty communicating in English. To complete my misery, he looked disinterested from the very beginning and was merely going though the motions.
I was not terribly surprised not to get selected to say the least.
From my observation, the majority of successful applicants for this masters course are FT. NTU should be renamed FTU..Foreign Talent University. Lecturers, admin, students are increasingly FT. (Remember the Indonesian FT that allegedly stabbed the FT professor? The witnesses? All FT also!)
I've had good friends and colleagues from all over the world and I'm not xenophobic, but whats happening in recent times is way overboard. Why are locals being made to feel like foreigners in their own land?
Triple whammy that peeves me:
1)Locals get displaced by FTs for places in our local Uni
2)These FTs therefore get better qualifications than locals and displace us in our job market.
3)and to top it off: the displaced Locals are subsidizing these FTs.
great!
