Indian rojak stall in food poisoning cases was "poorly maintained": MOH

SINGAPORE : An Indian rojak stall located at the Geylang Serai Temporary Market that was linked to a food poisoning outbreak last year was said to be "poorly maintained".

This is according to a Senior Public Health Officer from the Health Ministry, Abdul Rahman Osman, who inspected the Rojak Geylang Serai stall on April 4 last year.

In a coroner's inquiry on Tuesday, Mr Abdul Rahman added that the stall was dirty with food stains and showed signs of cockroach infestation.

Two women died after eating rojak bought from the outlet last year - 57-year-old Aminah Samijo, who died on 6 April; and 59-year-old Norani Kassim who died on April 8.

MOH also found that bacteria - indicative of poor sanitary conditions - were found on a chopping board used to cut food items in the stall.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Toh Shin Hao told State Coroner Victor Yeo that one of the bacteria - staphylococcus aureus - is commonly found on the human skin, while the other - faecal coliform - indicates the presence of faecal cross contamination.

However, the licensee of the stall, Sheik Alauddin Mohideen, said that the outlet was cleaned with soap and water every day after closing time.

He added that his staff wear gloves when they handle cooked food.

Mr Sheik Alauddin also stressed that all unsold food items were thrown away and the stall did not keep any leftovers.

Some 150 people fell ill after eating rojak bought from the food stall last April.

One of them, 38-year-old Rosiah Samat, who was expecting at that time, became unwell and suffered a miscarriage.

The hearing resumes on Thursday. - CNA/ms
