Professional drivers responsible for public safety can not do that lah, must eat during tea break lunch break enough full for their shift.
but when I did my own long road trips driving alone in North America, I will eat and drink in the car all the time. Road is long and I drive for weeks from US to Canada and then back, if I don't eat and drink along i will fall asleep on the wheel that is very unsafe.
I remember once after flying from SG via Taipei to LAX (more then 20 hours) and then drove from LA as soon as I got off the plane to Las Vegas for the winter CES exhibition. I woke up suddenly to realize that I was still driving on freeway 15 in the middle of Mojave Dessert (3am Pacific time). Shocked the crap out of me.

That stretch of FW15 is very long and straight & boring (dark), I was on cruise control, I just got off plane after more than 20 hrs of flight, and there is no FM station in that stage, I had to listen to AM with sleepy static sound. Car must had drifted off the lane and bumped the road surface reflectors, and noise woke me up. I was afraid to fall asleep again, so I drove with windows wound down and let cold winter desert air in to keep myself awake. And then when I reached gas station, I grab gas and food and drink to carry on to beat the road. When I reach Vegas & drop dead like pig on the hotel bed. The next day was very busy exhibition. That job was killing me.
It was usually 6-8 hrs to drive from LAX to Vegas, and only munching and drinking along the way can kept me awake. Radio helps but some times the radio got nothing on FM or just crappy stations (speaking Spanish for example) or talking GOD all the way (church stations). When driver is tired and hungry it is worse to fall asleep than to be distracted by food / drink.
However a public transport driver can not be compared with a lone motorist, if one is doing a professional job, he have to take his lunch / tea break when he stopped his bus. Too many lives are in his hands especially driving within a busy city. I was in the middle of dark cold lonely Mojave Desert, hardly any other cars in winter. I told myself bloody shit if this car over-turned in the desert there may be no one to discover until sunrise.
