The PAP did a lot of policies which they felt is good for Singaporeans. Many people disagreed with them.
This disagreement is across the board, covering even Marine Parade GRC. One exception, which is intriguing, is the Ang Mo Kio GRC.
Given the discontent, all it takes is a worthwhile opposition party to swing the votes. The Workers Party has proven itself to be highly consistent in looking after the estate. It had also proven itself to be consistent in voicing what it feels are the needs of the people in Parliament.
Their consistency thus resulted in the confidence of many towards them. The tsunami of confidence is so strong that it swept away two full ministers.
Thus the Workers Party is now given a chance to be worthwhile foreign talents in a Parliament dominated by the PAP. It is not about 'love'. It is about 'confidence' in a political party to represent their interest.
For those who like to view it in gender lines: The peoples of Aljunid has voted in the FIRST FEMALE opposition MP in preference over the first female minister. Why should a first female minister be worth less than a first female opposition MP? That is for the PAP to reflect.
If there had been more worthwhile oppositions, the swing of votes would be greater. Some played on our anger whilst promoting their own social agenda. Others promote their personal agenda. They are not worthy of our votes. For them, your point applies.
It does not apply to the Workers Party.
Unlike the others where a vote for them is a vote for them to canvass their social agenda or to sleep through the next five years, a vote for the Workers Party is to herald in a new era of political change. If the Workers Party can met the challenges of running a GRC, then in the next election, winning 20 to 30 seats is a feasibilty. Because the peoples of Singapore now have a responsible, committed, PROVEN alternative (no longer 'opposition') party.
