RESIDENTS in Opera Estate thought they were safe from floods.

For almost 10 years, since a $31-million drainage system was completed to shuttle away rainwater in the neighbourhood, the residents in the traditionally flood-prone area had been dry.

But they woke up on Saturday to find themselves in the soup - a muddy, teh tarik-coloured concoction of leaves, rubbish and sandy rainwater that gushed into their homes.

Neighbours screamed through partitions between houses at one another to alert them about the waters that went up to 38cm high at some spots, while trash bins, buckets and shoes went floating down the road.

Long-time residents said it was the worst flood they have seen since the 1960s.

Two rows of families, along Norma Terrace and Rienzi Street, were worst hit, with many saying their refrigerators, washing machines and other home appliances had short-circuited, and caused the whole house's power to go out.

Buy high ground at least 1m higher than average in that area. Will be very safe.

it's always better to buy higher ground and stay higher floors...

the whole world is sinking...and sinking fasterer and fasterest.

Maybe government want to make landed property more affordable?

Depends on the price. The is an old property that property cost between $1.2mil to $1.4mil for around 1800 sqft freehold home in Opera Estate area.

I would definitely buy this compared to a 99-years leasehold 1300 sqft apartment/condo that cost the same amount.

Throw in another $500K for T&R and you'll get a brand new home with 3000 sqft built-in (depending on design and materials); something you can never do with apartment/ condo.

Land is limited. It will always appreciate.

Flood also buy. You are the first.

Think longer term. With freehold land, you have options you do not get with apartments/ condo. Regardless of the flood, current market indicates that landed home gives you more value for money. Especially if the prices come down further.

Of course, if you buy this home, you should intent to rebuild it.

Compare this to the recent prices of 99 year leasehold condos. Why not? Like I said, just throw in another $500K-$600K and you'll end up paying the same price for twice/thrice the size and freehold.

Even better for investment as a fully rebuild home can go for $12K in rental; covering all your fees and mortgagees.

Yesterday afternoon, picked up this passenger who stay in Bukit Timah. He just sent his Mercedes E Class for scrap. The flood has damaged his car. He thinking of selling his house cos' he said he felt stressed by the once in 50 years thing.

Expect more flooding in coming days. We are probably in monsoon season now. Those living in flooding areas, good luck to them.

Property that were trapped ion the great flood ....good news the price of
your property has dropped to half !!! $1m now $1/2m!

Luckily I bought 50th storey on Pinnacle@Duxton. No such worries. :D

How much would freehold land that is constantly submerged under water be worth?

Mats are still the smartest race in the world! Why do you think they build kampong houses on stilts?

But they somehow become quite retard as Ministers. Must be an occupational hazard.

In the past floods would also bring power failures. If that happens you will have to walk 50 floors :)
