A family says 'thank you' to Singapore

MY WIFE, two children and I were recently in transit back to England from a holiday in Australia when, like thousands of other people across the globe, we became stranded because of the volcanic eruption in Iceland. Through this newspaper, we would like to convey our sincere thanks to all who helped us during our unexpected stay in Singapore.
Within a few hours of the cancellation of flights to Europe on April 15, staff at Changi Airport Terminal 3 ensured that blankets, sleeping bags, pillows and toiletries were supplied to stranded passengers, and we were all accommodated in an area of the airport where we could stay together and be informed of events. We were also well fed, and water was available all the time. We were even supplied with newspapers.
I must make special mention of the cleaners who kept the toilets spotless even when they were being used by so many stranded passengers.
Singapore Airlines could not have treated us better, given the circumstances. Not only did it lay on a free bus tour of Singapore for its passengers, but it was also swift to find us hotel accommodation once it became apparent that European airspace would not reopen soon.
Putting us up in a five-star hotel with breakfast, lunch and dinner for five nights was a gesture we have not been slow to recount to our family and friends.
When hundreds of stranded passengers descended on Terminal 3 once European airspace reopened, the situation was well managed and organised.
The staff of the Swissotel the Stamford, particularly those manning the concierge service, were very understanding of our plight and that of fellow passengers. All were was courteous and helpful and made our stay so pleasant. I had the unexpected fortune of celebrating my birthday while staying there, and it is certainly one I will remember.
Everyone else we met in Singapore - from the taxi drivers and shopkeepers to the people at the launderette - was so kind and helpful.
It had never occurred to us that Singapore could be a place for us to visit. However, those six days last month have certainly changed our minds.
