Edit
Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong appears to be still ¡¯shell-shocked¡¯ at his former principal private secretary Mr Tan Jee Say joining the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP).
When asked about the introduction of Mr Tan as a SDP candidate yesterday, SM Goh declined to comment, saying that he does not want to ¡®be in the arena.¡¯
¡°It¡¯s PM¡¯s and his team¡¯s show, so I take one step backwards. But in Marine Parade GRC, I have got to fight,¡¯ echoing his ¡®protege¡¯ Tin Pei Ling¡¯s now infamous ¡®I don¡¯t know what to say!¡¯
Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong will probably be fighting for his political career against the National Solidarity Party (NSP) in Marine Parade GRC.
Though Marine Parade GRC is his ¡¯stronghold¡¯ and has not been contested since 1992, SM Goh should not underestimate the negative publicity from the ¡®Tin Pei Ling¡¯ saga and the star power of NSP¡¯s Nicole Seah.
While Ms Tin was flamed mercilessly by netizens for the last few weeks for her apparent lack of substance and experience, Ms Seah has won the support and admiration of many young voters so far with her demure looks and calm composure displayed when speaking to the media. In less than a week, the number of fans on Ms Seah¡¯s Facebook increased from 100 to more than 10,000.
During the 2008 Malaysian election, the opposition fielded several young female candidates such as Jernice Lee, Hannah Yeo and Teo Nie Ching and all of them won against veteran MPs of several years¡¯ experience in their maiden election.
SM Goh must be praying hard that his percentage of votes is not dragged down too much by Ms Tin, who was ¡®offered¡¯ to him by none other than Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong himself.
