KUALA LUMPUR - A MALAYSIAN state ruler has commuted the punishment for a Muslim woman who was sentenced in a high-profile case to caning for drinking beer.
The lawyer and the father of Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno say she will instead have to perform community service for three weeks.
Lawyer Adham Jamalullail says Kartika received a letter Wednesday from the Pahang state Islamic department informing her about the state sultan's decision. Sultan Ahmad Shah is the guardian of Islam in the state.
Kartika's father Shukarnor Abdul Muttalib said on Thursday she was told to report to the Islamic department early on Friday.
Kartika was sentenced last July to six strokes of the cane for drinking beer in December 2007 at a beach resort in violation of Islamic laws. -- AP
