A 35-year-old sales assistant was charged today for using criminal force on an SMRT (Singapore Mass Rapid Transit) staff at Serangoon MRT station.

On Sep 10 last year, Wang Shu Jun, a Singapore permanent resident, attempted to enter the MRT station using only one EZ-link fare card for both herself and her five-year-old son.

A female station manager on duty took a photograph of Wang after she refused to return to the control station to pay the fare, reported the Shin Min Daily News.

The two women got into an altercation as Wang flew into a rage and attempted to grab the camera from the manager, Chua Hui Keng.

Chua suffered scratches on her arms as a result.

In her defence in court, Wang said she had forgotten to bring her son's EZ-link card as she was in a hurry.

Her friend, who stays in Serangoon, had agreed to look after her son as Wang was having a night out with some friends that night.

But it was already 11pm and she was in a rush, said Wang.

Wang told the court that she asked Chua if she could pay a 'deposit' of $50 and return later, or if Chua could walk with them to meet her friend first, but she had refused.

Wang said she attempted to take the camera only because Chua took a photo of her.

But when she wanted to pay the fare, the staff informed her that they had already called the police, said Wang.

A WOMAN was found guilty yesterday of using criminal force on an SMRT station manager at a train station.

Chinese national Wang Shu Jun, 35, a permanent resident, was convicted of scratching the hands of Ms Chua Hui Keng, 28, at the Serangoon MRT station, at about 11pm last Sept 10.

The prosecution's case is that the station manager had stopped Wang and her six-year-old son at the lift for not paying the boy's train fare. When she asked Wang to follow her, the woman replied that she would return after taking her son to a friend waiting at a taxi stand.

When Ms Chua refused, an argument broke out. She then snapped some photos of Wang, who tried to snatch the camera.
In the midst of a struggle, Wang scratched the victim's hand and pulled the cord of her walkie-talkie.

In her defence, Wang, who did not have a lawyer, demanded to know what right Ms Chua had to take her picture. She admitted it was her fault the child's fare had not been paid but denied using criminal force.

District Judge Eugene Teo adjourned the case to July 12 for sentencing. The maximum penalty is three months' jail and up to $500 in fines.

A WOMAN who used criminal force on a railway worker at Serangoon MRT station was jailed for a day and given the maximum fine of $1,500 on Tuesday.

Wang Shu Jun, 35, had been convicted after a trial of scratching the hands and pulling the cord of station manager Cindy Chua Hui Keng's walkie-talkie at the station at Serangoon Central on Sept 10 2010.

The China national was stopped by SMRT staff for not paying the fare of her five-year-old son who was also using a skate scooter within its premises.

The parties then tried to resolve the matter. Ms Chua subsequently took out a camera to snap a few pictures of Wang, who then committed the offence. She was also ordered to pay $500 compensation to the victim by District Judge Eugene Teo.

The judge said her conduct was wrong from the start, and that her response to the authorities was atrocious and utterly deplorable.

'By her actions, a simple fare payment matter ultimately resulted in injury to an SMRT officer, an emergency activation of several police officers to the scene, and disruption and inconvenience to other members of the public,' he said.

The housewife could have been jailed for up to three months for the offence.
