A WOMAN who was nabbed last week for allegedly selling babies to a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur is believed to have sold at least 12 infants in recent years and was living a life of luxury from her illegal earnings. Police are now tracing the babies and have questioned some mothers who had given birth at the Jalan Ipoh hospital to cripple a suspected syndicate behind the racket, Berita Minggu reported.
The woman, in her 40s, was nabbed at her home in Kota Baru, Kelantan and has been remanded to help in the investigations. The hospital allegedly paid her between RM12,000 and RM15,000 for each baby procured for the syndicate, which sought customers among wealthy families in the country or in neighbouring countries, such Singapore.
Police are also looking for the middleman who purportedly arranged for expectant mothers to deliver their babies at the hospital. The paper quoted CID director Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin as saying that the mediator used certain tactics, including offering money, to lure the victims to give birth at the hospital. On Nov 1, police questioned a doctor, who carries the “Datuk” title, as well as his wife, their daughter and three hospital staff over the issue.
