Woman from Georgia nabbed at airport with RM1.3 mil of syabu

By ANN TAN

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang International Airport is still the favourite entry point for drug traffickers following the arrest of a Georgian woman with RM1.3mil worth of syabu at the airport here. State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said the third arrest of foreigners for alleged drug trafficking at the airport this year was evident that it is still an entry point for drug trafficking activities. “In March this year, a Chinese national was arrested for smuggling in eight packs of heroin while in September, a Ugandan woman was arrested for bringing in 3kg of syabu worth RM750,000 through the airport.

“We are working closely with all relevant agencies and we hope the arrest of the 37-year-old woman will serve as a deterrent to them (drug trafficking syndicate),” he said in a press conference at the police headquarters yesterday (Oct 26). On Monday, the woman was nabbed by a state Narcotics Department team when she was walking towards the limousine rental counter at noon, shortly after stepping out from the plane.

A search on her black luggage with red stripes found four drawings with wooden frames. A probe further discovered two of the drawing frames containing six packets of syabu each, while another two frames were found to contain eight packets of syabu respectively. The 28 packets of syabu (methamphetamine crystals), or more popularly known as ice, weighs a total of 5.289kg.

DCP Ayub said the woman, who boarded a plane from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, thought she has successfully passed the scanning machine but the police personnel were alert enough to suspect something amiss. “We are determining whether she was bringing in the syabu herself or was she working for a syndicate behind the scene,” he said. A total of 253 foreigners have been arrested this year for alleged drug trafficking and drug abuse activities.
