KUALA LUMPUR: An elderly woman lost RM256,565(S$106140.35) in savings and jewellery to three women who terrified her by claiming she would die in three days unless she goes through a cleansing ritual. Lee Yoke Chan, 61, went to the morning market in Cheras last week when two women approached her, asking for directions to a temple. During the conversation, they told Lee that she was being followed by the ghost of a pregnant woman who had died in an accident.
They offered to take me to a sifu (master) at a temple nearby," she told reporters after seeking help from MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong yesterday. The three told Lee that she was to hand over all her money and jewellery which would be returned to her after the ritual. They also insisted that I could not reveal this matter to anyone as the 'magic' of the ritual would not work once it was known to a third party," she said.
One of them accompanied Lee to a nearby bank where the mother of four withdrew her savings of RM186,565. The woman also followed Lee home to keep" RM70,000 worth of jewellery. The two then returned to the market where the other two women were waiting. Once there, one of the women changed the story and told Lee that the cleansing ritual could not be performed because the sifu had left the temple.
They took my bag containing the money and jewellery. They gave me a drink, claiming the sifu had recited a prayer in it," said Lee. The group headed towards Lee's car and placed the bag on the seat, telling her to only open it the next day, failing which, the bad luck would continue to haunt Lee. To her horror, when she opened the bag the next day, it was filled with three oranges, two packets of instant noodle, plain bread, a mineral water bottle and two bottles of salt. Lee lodged a police report the same day.
