SMRT needs to hasten installation of screen doors at all platforms, says a reader, after learning about the death of a man who jumped onto the tracks at Tanah Merah MRT station on Saturday.
The incident, which reportedly involved a man in his 20s, resulted in delayed train services affecting as many as 5,000 East-bound commuters for half an hour.
According to a report in The New Paper, the man was pronounced dead at 3:30pm on Saturday.

Any longer, and more unnecessary deaths could occur, he says.
In an e-mail, the worried reader says:
"One more person has died on the tracks at Tanah Merah.
"If screen doors had been put in earlier, this would not have happened.
"I really wonder why it takes SMRT four years to install the safety doors.
"Singapore is a really efficient society. It should be possible for a company as large as SMRT to install this important feature without delay.
"Please don't risk anymore lives by delaying the project further.
"I hope SMRT will install screen doors before 2012. The public cannot wait any longer."

It's crazy to spend money and later pass on costs to innocent passengers. Law must be enacted that the estates and family members of people committing suicide damaging or inconveniencing public facilities shall be held liable to the full extent up to bankrupting the very last one lineally related.

The track doors will make a difference.
They are quite high, it's not easy to jump over one unless you are a champion high jumper or pole vaulter.

If SMRT put up the screens now, and more people need to suicide...need to jump off high rise.

Jumping off high rise will endanger the innocent public passing by below with "killer litter".

Therefore, SMRT may be providing a window period from now to 2012 for incumbents to make use of this window period to excise their freedom of choice if one chose to jump, while not endagering the general public.
