Anti-China protests bring Taiwan capital to standstill

TAIPEI (AFP) — The streets of central Taipei came to a standstill on Thursday as tens of thousands of protesters chanted slogans and blew air horns to protest closer ties with China being promoted by their leaders.

The demonstrators were determined to express their outrage at the presence of Chen Yunlin, Beijing's top negotiator on Taiwan affairs, who was heading a large delegation of Chinese officials and business people visiting the island.

The protesters, mostly supporters of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), flooded into the plaza in front of the presidential office and were cordoned off from government buildings by riot police.

"Taiwan, China. One country on each side (of the strait)," the demonstrators shouted, waving flags and placards reading, "Chen Yunlin, get out."

The cacophony could be heard for kilometres (miles) around the plaza as they moved off, on foot and in vans equipped with loudspeakers, towards the hotel on the other side of the city where the Chinese delegation was staying.

Protesters have been angered by deals that both governments insist will bring enormous economic benefit to both sides, fearful that money and jobs will flood out of Taiwan to take advantage of the labour and resources of China.

Demonstrators said they were also angry that a meeting between Taiwan's democratically-elected President Ma Ying-jeou and Chen had been moved forward by several hours, a move they suspected was to avoid any discomfort for the Chinese official with a show of widespread public anti-China sentiment.

Ma had been embarrassed by demonstrations late Wednesday that saw Chen trapped inside a building for several hours before police could secure him safe passage back to his hotel.

He told a press conference ahead of his meeting with Chen the episode had damaged Taiwan's image internationally and could hurt tourism.

Some demonstrators scuffled with police Thursday in their attempts to get past barbed wire barricades and at least two men were arrested for allegedly attacking police.

Others threw eggs at the barricades and bottled water at riot police.

Organisers put the number of demonstrators at 100,000. Taipei's police had no immediate crowd estimate but said more than 3,000 officers were deployed.

Local media said at least a dozen police, protesters and reporters were injured during the scuffles, but police could not confirm the reports.

DPP chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen told the crowd the demonstrations would continue.

"We are doing this for the future of Taiwanese people," she said. "We want to defend Taiwan's sovereignty and human rights."

Most of the protestors don't know what they are protesting about.

talk peace or ask for investment?
The agenda for this visit was to sign agreements to increase airline and air cargo frequency and to set certain food safety standards.
In fact, Chen Yunlin make a formal apology to the Taiwan people for the tainted milk issue at a press conference before his visit.
The politicians are trying to buy political points by protesting, but I really don't understand what the people are trying to achieve.
Less airline frequency and lower food safety standards?

This what will happen when there are too much freedom of speech and democracy in a country..ppl emotion are easily stir by politicians for their own political gain..think LKY is right to control the media and limit protest to speaker corner
I didn't like to agree with your point, but you're probably right to some extent.
When too much freedom and democracy leads to violence without achievement of any tangible objective for the good of the country, then it may be better not to allow protests at all.
It is a sad time for Taiwan.
I feel sorry especially for the reporters and policemen who got hurt in the course of trying to do their jobs.

China has nukes pointing in Taiwan's direction. Any protest by the Taiwanese on anything regarding China is legitimate.

Even if the protest is legitimate, is it right to throw stones and eggs at reporters and policemen, and even spit at the mayor of Taichung?
Is it right to push Zhang Ming Qing to the ground?
Protesting is an indication of the peoples' rights, democracy, spirit and indignation, but those this does not justify the violence.
The Taiwan people need to have a stronger sense of what is right and what is wrong.
Why don't they protest against ex president Chen?

Democracy will take a long road to mature..US is a good example of real democracy where the people were given much allowance to protect and usually ends up in a peaceful way. Taiwan democracy has run out of control, in the name of democracy the opposition of TW will used it to justify all sorts of violent or even corruption..the situation were also make worst when Ma's goverment is too soft to handle the protest. To add more spices, the Taiwan news media will keep playing live riots reports which will stir up emotions which i think it only make all Taiwanese look like a fool infront of the whole world. Often we don't see any political figure held for resposibilty after the sence, on a contrary some gain more supporter after the plot is sucessfully to make Ma yin jiu looks bad. The assalut of the China envoy Zhang Min Chin is a good example, where you see Wang Ding yu the assialiant appear on TV and make good use of the opportunity to get himself famous..Taiwan soceity is sick!
I don't blame the media. Even CNN and BBC played the videos of Zhang Ming Qing eing pushed to the ground and of the protests.
What is wrong is the people who organize and fail to prevent violent protests and the people who protest violently without fully understanding what they are protesting about.

Only a handful were the perpetrators. Can't blame everyone at the protest. Like I said the protest is legitimate. Some got carried away thats all. Even Bill Gates get eggs in the face or (was it a pie) and he does not even threaten anybody harm.

You point nukes at someones home and threaten to kill them but expect everybody in that house to welcome you with open arms. Cmon get real.

You are being bias just because you share a common race. What if m&d country point nukes at chinese majority sinkeeland? Are you gonna welcome any Datuk with open arms?
