Bona fide opposition parties should be careful of Trojan horses.
Realise that LHL is running out of resources. Key men like Jayakumar has retired, and WKS has thoroughly managed to discredit himself. The only old guard left is GCT & LKY. You can bet that LHL will try maximise both of his resources throughout this campaign.
Knowing LKY, he'd have planned several steps ahead of his competitors. At his advanced age, he would be well aware of his body's limitations. He will have lots of difficulty doing the usual leg work required in walkabouts around his whole GRC.
Hence, it would be to his advantage to CHOOSE the weakest opposition to run against him. Isnt it coincidental that a relatively unknown party, whom most suspect cannot even form a team to run in a GRC, suddenly volunteers to do a group hara-kiri against LKY?
Remember the slogan : In politics, there are no permanent friends, just permanent interests. LKY knows the opposition parties are not keen to engage in 3 cornered fights, so he may already have taken the initiative. The usual opposition parties will be naturally expected to be relieved that any team is willing to run against LKY.
Here are a few scenarios where DPP can throw a spanner into the works :
a. On nomination day, they can declare that they cannot recruit enough members so they have to FORFEIT their slot.
b. They can pull a James Gomez stunt to get themselves effectively disqualified from the election.
In both the above cases, this will result in LKY's GRC being uncontested so LKY is free to lend his weight to the weaker GRCs.
Another possibility is that the DPP fellas can "accidentally" say something stupid (which the MSM will gladly splash on as the headlines) and effectively neuter themselves. LKY can then stroll in to another victory while lending island-wide support.
Naturally, no party will be willing to send a team to contest LKY for a supposedly 3-cornered fight. But they should well be aware of the cost of not contesting LKY's GRC, where their opponent's greatest resource is free to move around to lend support fire.
In view of the stalemate by WP & NSP over the Moulmein/Kallang GRC, perhaps WP can negotiate with NSP for the latter to do "National Service" by sending a team to contest Tg Pagar since WP has already done so once before at AMK.
Do LKY a favor, contest there and let's see how much ground support he REALLY has.
