wonderful article.

I shared my thoughts as a non-partisan speaker at the Policy Forum 2024 organized by the People’s Power Party yesterday. Appended is the gist of my sharing.
Ever so often, I come across netizens calling Singaporeans “Sinkies” and “Sheeples”.
The Oxford dictionary defines “
sheeples” as “people compared to sheep in being docile, foolish, or easily led”. It does not define “Sinkies”, but I would term it as “people staring impending doom in the face, but would not do anything about it”.
I surmise that the manipulation and narrowing of their opinions by powerful forces, and closely related to it, the lack of diversity of situations, has made them become “Sinkies” and “Sheeples”.
These powerful forces include consumerism; the uniform education they go through; the similar housing estates they live in; the same state TV stations they tune to; the same state newspapers that they read; the draconian laws restricting freedom of expression and the carefully cultivated public opinion.
“Sinkies” thus have the same fears and hopes which did not emanate naturally from each and everyone—which would have been different and diverse—but instead was instilled in them, without them knowing.
The German philosopher, linguist and diplomat, Wilhelm von Humboldt, cited freedom of thought, and arising from it, variety of situations, as the “grand and indispensable conditions for the development and flourishing of the individual”.
The English Philosopher John Stuart Mill, understood that free speech, free inquiry, and open debate are the keys to human progress. They aren’t just vital to human well-being, but foundational. As he wrote in conclusion to his second chapter of “On Liberty”, “these are the human freedoms on which all their other well-being depends.”
Given the lack of such freedom and diversity that are “foundational to human well-being”, it is thus not surprising that “Sinkies” are not thriving.
In fact, Elon Musk thinks they will be extinct soon since the reproduction rate is abysmal. I think “Sinkies” somehow sense their fate and would rather not bring another to suffer the same.
Even worse, not an insignificant number of them are taking their own lives, as Singapore sadly tops the suicide rate in South-East Asia.
And Singapore Inc, one of the four Asian Tigers that emerged towards the end of the last millennium, is sputtering because all it was good at was mobilizing and employing resources; and when all that is done, it can’t find the creative juice to keep up the performance, for “Sinkies” have been moulded to be conformists.
Alas! Talk about shooting themselves in the foot.
My fellow “Sinkies”, the un-examined life is not worth living. Listen to your heart and form your own opinions. Be cognizant of the powerful forces that are trying to shape them for you, and thus take away the essence of your life.
