<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->THE aide to then-Ren Ci Hospital chief Ming Yi had an employment contract without even being interviewed for the job by the charity's human resources department.
But a court heard yesterday that Raymond Yeung's May 2001 contract did not take effect because it depended on his securing an employment pass to work here - and he could not get one.

THE joint trial against Ren Ci Hospital founder Ming Yi and his former personal assistant Raymond Yeung wrapped up its sixth day of hearing yesterday.

While Ming Yi faces 10 charges in all, only four are the focus of this current trial.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Ren Ci made several appeals on the Australian citizen's behalf over the next few years. He was finally granted a pass in 2004, when a fresh application was made - more than three years later.
Details of his links with Ren Ci emerged yesterday when two former heads of the hospital's human resources department took the stand as witnesses for the prosecution in the case against Buddhist monk Ming Yi and Yeung.
One of them, Ms Joyce Teng, the department head in April 2001, said Ming Yi instructed her that month to submit Yeung's employment pass application to the Ministry of Manpower.
She did so, although Yeung had not been interviewed for the job.
A few days later, Yeung's application was rejected. No reason was given.
An appeal was filed, and it was while this was pending that Ming Yi asked for an employment contract to be drawn up.
Signed by Yeung on May 12, 2001, the document stated that he was to start work the following month.
But the appeal was unsuccessful and several more were made. Ms Susan Tang, who took over as Ren Ci's head of human resources in June 2001, said appeals were made 'quite a few times'.
With the appeal pending, Yeung began work as Ming Yi's personal assistant - as a 'volunteer', as the monk told the police last March.
But Ms Teng said yesterday the monk had told her how Yeung was to be paid: 'He told me to pay Raymond's salary into his pay and he would pay Raymond.'
The hospital went ahead and did so, increasing Ming Yi's pay from $16,000 in May 2001 to $20,700 the next month.
Asked who determined his pay, Ms Tang said it was usually the monk himself.
But she agreed with his lawyer, Senior Counsel Andre Yeap, that before this sudden pay rise, the monk had drawn the same pay for more than two years.
The court also noted that he took a pay cut to $15,000 for more than a year from November 2002, and another cut from the start of 2005. From June that year, he stopped drawing a salary altogether.
The prosecution said earlier in the trial that it asked questions about the monk's sudden pay increase to show how close the two men were, and that this was relevant to the conspiracy charges they face. [email protected]

You mean you never notice how handsome Raymond is? How to find the same quality for Ming Yi from Singapore? Not only that you can bump into relatives any time.
