My friend phoned me in the evening (after the rally) and we spoke. He told me a photographer tried to take a photo of him even though he is away from the main crowd and it will not serve the photographer any purpose as there is no backdrop of the crowd or anything that he thinks is news worthy. This photographer does not seem to be from any news station, but it was pretty dark and my friend could not tell who this photographer belongs to.

Anyone also has similar experience?

Totalitarian regimes always get their security personnel to take pictures of crowds at dissident events. China does it all the time.

Intimidation to those who are there, and deterrence to those who are thinking of going.

It happened at the various Hong Lim Park speeches too. ;)

Nothing to worry. If done, it will be taken covertly. Watch out for bags.

What you mean by 'watch out for bags"?

He was not with the crowd, he told me but was at the side, away from the field and only a few other spectators are near to him, but the photographer purposely walk up to him in the dark and focus his camera directly only at him and not the other people near him.

If done by you-know-who, targets wont even know.

I don't know what you talking about. What is 'watch out for bags' and 'you-know-who'?

How can someone take a frontal photo of another and the person does not know? Surely he will know. For the photographer is so close to him.

Even the better trained PIs are able to do it.

GD knows what he is talking about and that is the truth. If you are the target you will not know that you have been photographed. Innocent looking bags hide cameras.
