Why Obama will never be elected in Singapore

In his victory speech, U.S. President-elect Barack Obama said:

“If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.”

Well, if there is anyone out there who harbors hopes that Obama’s feat can be repeated in Singapore, then you are going to be dead wrong.

If there is an Obama amongst us, and that is a BIG if, most likely he would rather be earning a honest living as a lawyer than to get his hands soiled in politics in the first place. Just take a look at Mr Philip Jeyaretnam, the younger son of Singapore’s opposition icon, Mr J.B. Jeyaretnam, who is also a Senior Counsel.

Had he displayed any signs of political ambitions like the young Obama when he was actively involved in serving his community on the streets of downtown Chicago as a budding lawyer fresh out of college, he would be invited immediately to a “tea party” by the ruling PAP and made a candidate in the next election.

Now, the chances of Singapore’s Mr Obama joining the opposition to call for change is very very small, but assuming it does happen by freak of an accident, he would have to contend with several hurdles along the way.
