Why no dedicated free-to-air YOG channel?
Letter from Robin Chee Ming Feng 05:55 AM Aug 17, 2010

I AM dismayed by the coverage of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games currently taking place in Singapore. It is absurd that as the host nation, one trying to develop a sporting culture among its citizens, there is only a grand total of eight-and-a-half hours of television coverage (excluding the one-hour daily highlight package) on free-to-air channels each day.

My friends visiting Singapore told me they were surprised to note that we have to wait until 1pm each day to get any coverage of the Games. Surely, some of the morning programmes could be pre-empted to telecast some of the earlier events?

Also, no channels dedicated to YOG coverage were set up for this once-in-a-lifetime event. I understand that there is more extensive coverage of the Games on StarHub TV, but why should those not without StarHub subscriptions be penalised?

In addition, I know of many SingTel subscribers wondering if mio TV will consider broadcasting major sporting events like the YOG, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. I'm sure many English Premier League fans are sports fans in general who would like to catch the major tournaments and track the progress of Singapore's athletes.

Finally, the official Games website must be improved immediately, especially the free online channels meant to broadcast some of the action "live". When I tuned in for the basketball and badminton events, the screen froze every three seconds. It eventually turned blank and died on me.

I hope the parties involved can sort out these issues soon before more sports fans are disappointed.

Here's how to catch the action with MediaCorp
Letter from Ms Kim Wong Vice-President Channel 5, MediaCorp TV

WE REFER to the letters about MediaCorp's coverage of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

We wish to clarify that Channel 5 was unable to carry the football preliminary match between Singapore and Zimbabwe as the "live" signals of the match were not made available by Olympic Broadcasting System, the party in charge of the entire YOG production, which provides the feed to all broadcasters. The highlights of the match were featured in Today At The Games, a round-up of the day's sporting action, on Aug 15 at 11pm on Channel 5.

As the official free-to-air broadcaster of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), MediaCorp will endeavour to deliver the excitement of the inaugural YOG to sporting fans on all of our media platforms. From Aug 15 to 25, viewers can keep a pulse on the daily sporting action from the Games by tuning in to Okto from 1pm to 3pm, Channel U from 3pm to 5pm and Channel 5 from 3pm to 8pm. In addition, to round up each day, there is a daily highlights programme, Today At The Games, on Channel 5 at 11pm. And as with the opening ceremony, viewers can look forward to the closing ceremony, which will be shown "live" on Aug 26 at 7.30pm on Channel 5.

Viewers can also log on to http://xinmsn.com/yog for the telecast schedule, athlete profiles, blogs, medal tallies, the latest YOG news and a catch-up of the previous day's YOG TV coverage. For in-depth stories, daily coverage and analysis of the results from the Games, viewers can log on to www.channelnewsasia.com/YOG and www.todayonline.com/yog.

MediaCorp has always been and continues to be a keen supporter of Team Singapore's sporting achievements. Subject to broadcast availability, we will continue to bring the best moments of the YOG to our viewers, notably key medal winning games and matches that feature Team Singapore athletes. Viewers will be kept informed of these ad hoc schedules as and when these matches are confirmed.

We thank the letter writers for the opportunity to clarify the coverage of the YOG and we hope that they will continue to enjoy the excitement of the Games with MediaCorp.

This is more proof that tickets sales are very very poor.

It is also very very bad planning.

A host country with no proper channel for live feed means THEY HAVE NO BUDGET lah.

THIS YOG IS A WORLDWIDE EMBARRASSMENT FOR SINGAPORE; IRREGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY HIGHLIGHT IN THE LOCAL NEWS....BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS ONLY HGIHLIGHT THE GOOD AND SKIP REPORTING ABOUT THE BAD....THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINS FROM FOREIGN TEAMS THAT HAVE GONE UNREPORTED..

mr robin,

ticket sales so bad already and u still want FOC live coverage??

anyway what is there to see about YOG? siow huh. i rather watch taiwan drama 'LOVE'. Thats how bad YOG is in my opinion.

agreed, no dedicated channel to air the sport makes it irritating as programs on other channels r being interrupted. if they air it on 1x dedicated channel, then all who're interested can watch on that channel, while others who're not interested can continue watching they fav programs on usual channels.
