350 from every cohort defaulted NS every year. Assuming 15000 able-bodied boys are drafted, about 1 out of every 50 boys run road. The figure is higher, if we include those who unfit, migrated or are in jail (boys who served longer jail terms are exempted).

In Singapore, the average NSF is more diligent and committed than the regulars. The ecology is unhealthy. Due to our conscription, the slack ones among the regular soldiers get automatic promotion because the system ranks most conscripts below them. In contrast, it takes years for a US Marines to be trained before being a section leader and many more retires from the service with lower ranks but with far superior combat skills and experience than our local professional soldiers.
After NS, some of these boys will attend NUS or NTU, and 1/4 to 1/3 of every bachelor cohort are foreigners (most of them sponsored or PRC, Indian and ASEAN scholars). The rest struggled to pay more for tier-2 degree programs with private or overseas educators. Many good students who aspired to be doctors get squeezed out by foreigners. A few years ago, young chap asked a Minister about this situation, and was told that this is healthy for Singapore and the fallen ones from JC and Poly who will be taxi-drivers, insurance-agents and housing-agents of higher quality.
The work and family life of the local men are compromised during their reservist years. In Taiwan and Korea where they are technically still in war, reservists report for ICT for just 2-5 years and the annual stint is also significantly shorter. Many Singaporean men's career are affected. While the average Singaporean men are better educated and trained than Malaysian and Indian men, we saw big organizations like Johnson & Johnson, 3M and banks, hiring many Malaysians and Indians in senior positions.
It's not only in workplace, it is better to be a foreign-talent in Singapore. Visit some top schools and you will wonder why children of local fathers who served NS are rejected while non-citizens get enrolled.
