TWENTY disgruntled customers of the now defunct nail spa Wax in the City (WITC), marched down to a new spa - Silky Temptation - demanding compensation for packages bought on Friday.
The women are claiming that the owner of the two-day old spa, which has taken over WITC's Circular Road premises, is in cahoots with WITC's owner Alexis Zhuo.
They say that Silky Temptation's owner Monica Lee and Mr Zhou are in a relationship. And given that Ms Lee used to work at WITC as a manicurist, it is too much of a coincidence that Silky Temptations is setting up shop at WITC's old Circular Road location.
In his first interview with the press Mr Zhuo admitted that he has not been answering calls from 20 customers daily and that he has left them in the lurch. However, he said, he had no choice.
The 27-year-old said he took over WITC's two outlets - in Tanjong Pagar and Circular Road - in February this year (2010). This was when things took a turn for the worst, he said, admitting that it could have been due to his adjustment problems with a new business.
When asked about his links to Silky Temptation, Mr Zhuo said he didn't know that it had set up at the old WITC location because that outlet had shut down long before he took the reins.
It is unclear exactly how many clients have lost, but 20 who spoke to The Straits Times say they have unused amounts of between $535 and $1,999. So far, more than 200 customers have gone to the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) for help; it is understood that 40 others have filed police reports. And almost 300 have banded together on social networking site Facebook to share information on what they can do.
