ICA reply didn't address a key point

<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->

I REFER to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority's (ICA) reply, 'Singaporeans have many options at entry points' (April 2), to Mr Tom Wang's letter, 'Most countries have more than a single lane for returning citizens' (March 29).
The reply missed Mr Wang's point. He asked why there was only a single dedicated lane for Singaporeans at Changi Airport, and he urged the ICA to examine the possibility of increasing the number of dedicated lanes for Singaporeans.
Instead, the ICA extolled the virtues of its system at Changi Airport. The reply did not address a key point of Mr Wang's question, which was to explain the rationale for a single dedicated lane.
Also, if the system is as good as the ICA says, why do Singaporeans need a dedicated lane at all?

Wait for the Char lAtan character to come in to say how easy it was for him to breeze through immigration. If he had a family with young children, he will realise that it will be the PRs who can use the automated clearance who will be breezing past him while he is stuck in the immigration queue with restless kids.

I have visited countries, where the immigration clearance actually gave priority to families with young kids to clear customs separately from the main queue so that they don't have to wait too long. This is called world class.

Like that also complain? Wait till you need to visit certain countries that requires you to pay extra for faster clearence of immigration(cut queue) if not wait for hours.

They cannot give straight reply because of the twisted replies that they have given all these years to any questions that have been posted to them. At least now, you get threaten thereafter by dogs appearing at your door when you are sound asleep and maybe nothing else. Back then it was totally something else with also the dogs in blue at your doorstep at night followed by free meals for the rest of your life in some "resort island".

The current misleading replies that you get from all these dogs are typical, you are trash and FTs coming in are gems. Sinkies! Pls. think about your current predicament, without FTs you are already 2nd class citizens, now with FTs do you think you have merely moved down to third class?

Many people still don't understand the system. Civil servants don't answer to people. They carry out civil duties as ordered by government, otherwise resign (many did and do, including yours truly). Government should answer to the people as they're voted in by the people. However, too many walkowvers and sure-wins until everybody blur. Who's to blame. Of course, the people! Don't want to learn, don't want to exercise rights, just complain to press and government. Of course then, press and government got more powers through these mentalities.

I have to admit, I'm not married and have no young kids so I can't comment. However in terms of time in the queue for clearing customs barring any EU countries which basically almost don't check passport for EU citizens, I haven't seen one that is as efficient as in SG.

Besides the Automated clearance systems and the dedicated one for locals, I don't understand what is wrong with someone using the lane call ALL PASSPORT just so U make sure U don't go after the PRs. I can't comment about the woodlands checkpoint since I have never used it, but PRs cannot use the automated clearance system at the airport. It's strictly for SG Passport only.

You are sadly mistaken, please visit the URL http://www.ica.gov.sg/page.aspx%3Fpageid=196&secid=195 to find out more.

Overview

The Immigration Automated Clearance System (IACS) is a smart card based immigration self clearance system harnessing biometric and automation technology at the checkpoints. The IACS was introduced to provide efficient and secure immigration clearance at the checkpoints.

The system enables ICA to serve you better and to meet the challenges of the ever-increasing passenger traffic by allowing travellers to have “express” immigration clearance.

Frequent travellers who wish to use IACS can apply for a personalised Access Card. The Access Card is a smart card which stores the holder's fingerprint data. Presently, the IACS is available at Changi Airport, Singapore Cruise Centre, Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and the bus passenger halls of the Woodlands and Tuas Checkpoints.

Since 2006, ICA has introduced an upgraded version of the IACS to the checkpoints. Known as the Enhanced Immigration Automated Clearance System, it enables Singapore Citizens who have already registered for their identity cards (i.e. their fingerprints have been captured in our National Registration database) and in possession of valid machine-readable Singapore passports to clear immigration via the automated gates on their own, without the need to apply for the IACS card. Singapore Citizens above the age of 6 and who hold Biometric Passports are also eligible to use the eIACS.

On 18 August 2008, the eIACS facility has also been extended to Singapore Permanent Residents holding ICAO compliant machine-readable passports updated with ICA, and who have already registered for their identity cards (i.e. their fingerprints have been captured in our database).

From Jan 2009 onwards, ICA issued polycarbonate long term pass card holders can also use the eIACS facility if they are holding ICAO compliant machine-readable passports, which must be updated with ICA.

Using eIACS

The following groups of travelers have eIACS extended to them automatically without charge. They are required to hold valid ICAO compliant machine-readable passports. For non-Singaporean users, their latest passport details must be updated with ICA.

* Singapore Citizens who have registered for their NRIC
* Singapore Citizens aged 6 and above who have yet to register for their NRIC but have been issued Singapore Biometric Passport
* Singapore Permanent Residents who have registered for their NRIC
* Singapore Immigration Long Term Pass holders who have registered their fingerprints with ICA during the issuance of the new polycarbonate cards

Pls click on link to download guide on how to use the eIACS.

Note: Current fingerprint scanning technology cannot read fingerprints that are faint or excessively wet / dry, accurately. Please click on link to download guide on proper positioning of finger for verification when using eIACS.

Applying for IACS

The following groups of travelers can apply for IACS card to clear immigration via the automated immigration gates on their own (note: applicants must be minimally be aged 6 years old and above).

* Singapore citizens who have yet to register for their NRIC and does not hold Biometric Passports.
* Singapore Permanent Residents holding non-ICAO compliant machine-readable passports; or have yet to register for their NRIC even if they are in possession of ICAO compliant machine-readable passports
* Singapore Immigration Long Term Pass holders holding non-ICAO compliant machine-readable passports; or who have yet to obtain the new polycarbonate card even if in possession of ICAO compliant machine-readable passports
* Employment / Work Permit / Dependent Pass holders

Using IACS

1 Insert Access Card
At the dedicated IACS lane, the IACS user inserts his/her Access Card into the card reader.
2 Place Finger on Scanner
Place your right thumb on the fingerprint scanner for verification. Exit through the automated gate after verification.

Note: Current fingerprint scanning technology cannot accurately read the fingerprint from excessively wet and dry fingers. If the current registration system identifies your finger as being 'wet' or 'dry', your application cannot be processed.

Yeah lah. Can use the automated lane mah. That one only Singaporeans can use. I use that all the time unless I am travelling with my baby.

i once used the delicated lane to go oversea and when i returned, i was served a warning letter for not reporting my trip. Previously, i never got a warning letter from not doing so, since my trip didnt clash with my ICT or Manning.

The delicated lane is to keep track of cheapo singaporeans by the police state. Use it at ur discreet.
