(MENAFN) Controversies over overbilling are scaring medical tourists away from Singapore, Bloomberg reported. The nation of Brunei complained, sparking Singapore to investigate the up to USD200,000 a day charged by Susan Lim in 2007 to treat a member of Brunei's royal family who later died of cancer. Lim cut the total bill from USD20.1 million to USD9.8 million, but says she did so out of kindness. Lim's case sparked renewed calls for Singapore to reinstate medical fee guidelines. These guidelines would clarify expenses before clients have come to seek medical treatment, Janson Yap, head of Deloitte's Southeast Asia life sciences and health care branch, said. Singapore may fall behind in its quest for a share of the USD5.5 billion medical-tourism market in Asia as patients seek cheaper care in countries such as India, where a heart bypass surgery costs USD10,000, or Thailand, with a cost of USD20,000, compared to Singapore's USD23,000, Dubai's USD44,000, and US's USD130,000. Singapore's medical tourism board says that its prices are competitive with other Asian countries because patients have longer hospital stays in Singapore. Singapore's tourism board announced that last year the country brought in USD76.1 million from medical tourism.
